1 Manual Transmission problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 02/07/2005

The driver was shifting to second gear when all of a sudden he heard a pop, and was unable to change gears, preventing the vehicle from moving. Took vehicle to dealer for checkup, and results showed that second gear was broken, and needed to be replaced.

2 Manual Transmission problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 01/27/2005

The car never shifted gears easily from when new. At 13,000 miles the dealer replaced the clutch under warranty with an '03 spec clutch assembly. The shuddering ceased, but the transmission whined excessively and it was still difficult to shift gears, especially when cold. Last week, in very cold temperatures, all power was lost and the transmission could not be shifted and I was in the middle of traffic. The car was towed to the dealer, inspected by rep and deemed to be abused, therefore, no coverage under warranty. When is Subaru going to recognize that they have a problem in that this particular transmission is not engineered to handle the increase power of the wrx motor? there was no abuse, no racing or driver error associated with this failure. I am fortunate not to have caused an accident.

3 Manual Transmission problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 11/22/2004

I own a 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx with a manual transmission. Every once in awhile when I come to a complete stop and place my car in neutral it does not want to go back into first gear. So I have to go ahead and put it into second gear. I have already complain to the dealer and they have done nothing about it. They just say that there is nothing wrong with my transmission.

4 Manual Transmission problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 09/13/2004

On Sunday September 12th, 2004 I was travelling with my mother southbound on the 5 freeway. The traffic was stop and go. I was stopped ,and had put the car into first gear and released the clutch and there was a loud pop. First gear was gone. I drove it home. The following day took it to bob baker Subaru in carlsbad, CA. An hour later they called me and told me the failure was a result of driver abuse and/or racing. They denied my claim! I wrote letters to Subaru and attempted to make phone calls (most were never returned). On oct. 27th I finally went to pick up the vehicle and paid $700 for them looking at the transmission and $205 for storing the car. It now only has second gear.

5 Manual Transmission problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 09/30/2003

Was driving the Subaru wrx in a normal fashion when the transmission locked up. After having it towed to classic Subaru, they opened it up and 2nd gear was stripped of all the teeth. They will not fix it under warranty claiming it was abused. This is not true. There are a large number of these transmissions that are stripping out obviously because they are engineered incorrectly. There is no way they can prove abuse. The car was only traveling 10mph when it happened. The car only has 23,000 miles on it. This is a major safety hazard because of not being able to move the car at all when this happens.

6 Manual Transmission problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza Wrx

Failure Date: 07/16/2003

Car: 02 Subaru wrx manual transmission the car suffers from the clutch judder described by many, and detailed in TSB 03-51-02. My car has 44000 miles. The basic warranty on the car is 3yr/36000. Powrtrain is 6 yr/60000. My dealer acknowledges my problem as being exactly as in the TSB. However, he informs me the repair is not to be fixed at no charge to me- since the basic warranty has expired. Given that the car is so difficult to drive, and there is an acknowledged manufacturing defect, in a powertrain component, I don't see the problem. Except Subaru of America wanting to avoid paying for it by labeling it a 'wear' item, and therefore covered under 3yr/36k. Please advise.
