Subaru Impreza Wrx owners have reported 65 problems related to clutch pedal/linkage (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Clutch pedal started squeaking and thought it was part in need of grease. Subaru dealership did a 60k maintenance and found no problems. Clutch suddenly went out (within a few miles) and pedal became hard to use. Took to a very experienced Subaru mechanic who diagnosed broken firewall welds. Repair will constitute removing the entire dash to reweld the spots. Mechanic explained to me that without repair, the pedal could experience a catastrophic failure during driving and come loose, possibly interfering with the brake pedal. Very serious safety concern. Many other owners are reporting similar concerns.

My clutch pedal has been creaking horribly the past 12 months. I've read numerous people talking about a faulty weld on the clutch assembly mounting to the firewall, but didn't think it could happen to my car. I took it to the dealership and they wanted to charge me $1500 just to pull out the transmission and look at the clutch when it's obvious the welds are faulty and have gone bad! I told him the thousands of people who have complained about the exact same issue and that Subaru of America was aware of the "known issue" but no dice. They insisted on a $1500 diagnostic check which didn't even include the price for an actual fix! soa wasn't much help, the sent a tech down to the dealership and the mechanic had him convinced they should pull out the transmission before doing anything else. My break pedal and clutch pedal both move significantly more than before, almost 2-3 inches. I'm afraid one day I'll be driving and I'll find the whole assembly lying on the floor in my car and will not be able to brake. This is really poor design and I'm surprised a recall has not been given. There is a serious risk of safety here and Subaru should be taking initiative to fix the problem before it's too late and folks start totaling cars and bringing risk to people around them.

09 Subaru wrx, spot welds in firewall broken. Causes brake pedal to shift over when clutch is pressed in. Safety hazard and manufacturer fault. Also causes annoying squeak and clicking noise.
The clutch pedal on my 2009 wrx makes a loud creaking noise every time it's depressed. When I investigated the noise, I noticed that the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly (attached to the forward firewall) shifts approx 1/4 inch every time the clutch pedal is depressed. I found that the spot welds securing the clutch pedal bracket to the forward firewall seem to be broken. This allows the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly to move, causing the creaking noise. I am afraid that if the problem gets worse the clutch will fail to disengage completely. If the bracket completely separates from the firewall, the clutch may become completely inoperative - especially dangerous while driving. It is especially disconcerting to watch the brake pedal move back and forth when the clutch pedal is depressed.
The contact owns a 2008 Subaru wrx. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, the clutch pedal made a popping sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated that the clutch pedal bracket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the problem persisted. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.
The clutch pedal and clutch is not operating properly when depressed. The pedals shift when the clutch pedal is depressed and makes a popping sound every time that originates from the fire wall / bulk head. My car has been repaired once before at just under 40,000mi at a Subaru dealer as authorized by Subaru of America and know it has 100,000mi and the issue has come back. This is a structural flaw that can and will lead to a accident with the 2008 and newer Subaru wrx's if it is not addressed and fixed by Subaru. If Subaru is not willing to repair the bracket weld issue and replace the clutch due to improper engagement I will let the welds fail and allow the clutch pedal and brake pedal fall to the floor board and try to control the crash as best as possible. Then I will proceed to file a law suit on the bases that Subaru knows of the issue and meant to cause due harm to the vehicle operator and the population of America.
I have an '09 wrx that I took in to hace oil changed and mentioned having a squeaky and clicking clutch pedal. Mechanic found bulkhead welds were broken. The issue is a broken welds between the mount for the pedal and the firewall. The firewall actually gaps when the clutch is depressed.
The clutch pedal on my 2008wrx makes a loud creaking/clicking noise every time it's depressed. When I investigated the noise, I noticed that the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly (attached to the forward firewall) shifts approx 1/4 inch every time the clutch pedal is depressed. I found that the three spot welds securing the clutch pedal bracket to the forward firewall were broken. From the outside of the firewall, just under the windshield wipers, I saw the spot welds pulling away from the firewall every time the clutch pedal was depressed. This allows the entire clutch pedal bracket assembly to move, causing the creaking noise. If the bracket completely separates from the firewall, the clutch may become completely inoperative - especially dangerous while driving. This also has increased wear on my transmission gears and synchros.
I was sitting in traffic when I pushed down on clutch pedal and realized I had no clutch. I had to rev car to 2,500 rpm to put in gear to drive. Then every time I came to a stop the car felt wired to stop. As I looked by my feet I noticed my clutch and brake pedal was moving quite freely to side to side. It was to late in day to take car to dealer and being a mechanic I checked car out myself. That's when I saw that the bracket that is welded to my firewall broke completely off. After dealing with Subaru and the dealer for a week now I have to pay $500 to have them fix the car as a courtesy they said. There are hundreds of complaints of this issue and what if I was on the highway and had to stop suddenly when this happened. I could have caused a major accident. Why do I have to pay to fix the flaw in the structural integrity of my vehicle that can cause an accident!.
After having the car for a few weeks I noticed the clutch pedal started making noises. I investigated and found that the clutch master cylinder was moving a lot for a part that should not move. I did a little research online and on forums and found that many other owners of the vehicle had similar problems. The welds on the firewall have cracked. It cause my brake pedal to shift whenever I depress the clutch pedal. It also has gotten so bad that shifting into gear at any speed over the 3400 rpm range becomes very difficult and in some case impossible! I drive to and from work 60 miles a day 5 days a week and have not modified the car in any way since I purchased the vehicle. The winter season is coming up and this will be my first winter with the car. I would hope the cold weather does not make the situation worse but is highly likely! this issue has caused stopping and shifting problems. I would not like this issue to cause a possibility that something can go wrong during this upcoming winter to make my car fail drastically in performance and land me in a hospital or worse. Please I advise you to address this issue as many other owners of this vehicle are having the same problems. Others have attempted to re weld but found that it is costly and only a temporary fix until it breaks again.
I was driving slowly through my neighborhood, put in the clutch and heard a loud crack. I couldnt figure out what it was so after taking a quick look I kept driving. Every time I put the clutch in I heard a loud creak or squeak. It got worse over the next months. Yesterday, I realized that the firewall had cracked where the clutch and brake pedal mount. The metal flexes when clutching or braking. If I use the clutch I can see the brake pedal move about half an inch back. I do not believe this allows the clutch to fully depress and I think that if I have to make an emergency stop the crack could get worse and tear not allowing the car to stop at all.
The clutch pedal makes a loud pop or click sound accompanied by a creaking sound every time the clutch pedal is depressed. Upon further inspection the brake pedal moves to the left at the same time the clutch pedal is depressed. From the engine compartment, it is visible where the metal has broken where the spot welds hold the pedal bracket to the firewall. If the rest of the welded spots break, the brakes and clutch may become inoperable during driving, potentially causing an acciedent.
I own a 2008 Subaru Impreza Wrx with a stock clutch. For approximately 2 years I have been hearing creaking and/or clicking noises when engaging the clutch pedal. Began to look online for a solution and found that there are spot welds that break between the firewall and the mounting bracket the clutch pedal assembly is attached to (https://www. Google. Com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=wrx+spot+welds). I removed the necessary items to inspect the welds and they did unfortunately fail. . Read more...
2009 Subaru wrx. Noticed that there was a loud clicking noise when the clutch was pressed. Upon investigation, the clutch pedal assembly had sheared off the firewall causing the plate and brake/clutch pedals to move sideways. Upon investigation of removing wiper cowling, noticed that three welds had broken thru the firewall and entire clutch master cylinder was moving in the engine bay. Dash had to be removed and pedal assembly bracket had to be re-welded and reinforced.
When I depress the clutch pedal there is a very noticeable, audible, "clicking" noise, and a stiff clutch pedal. It appears to be broken spot welds and a defective clutch. Have had this issue repaired by Subaru once but has returned multiple times. Is a major safety concern because clutch assemply is directly tied to brake and gas pedals, and when the welds fail completely it is a potential life threatening situation. If you do a simple goolge search for Subaru clutch clicking it is a huge problem and many many people are experincing this issue with there clutch's. It appears a recall is needed to fix this.
The clutch and brake pedal both move laterally and are making noise when pressed. Research has yielded that this is a common problem with 2008+ wrx. The issue is the clutch bracket separating from the firewall. There are spot welds that have failed, and the part needs to be rewelded to prevent the movement/noise.
I have been noticing a creaking and popping noise from my clutch/brake pedal assay for some time now and have found it to be the brace that holds the clutch and brake pedal to the firewall of vehicle is spot welded in 2 places at top of bracket and the spot welds have cracked and broken and the brace now moves around and the clutch and brake pedal bind and stick. I have since noticed it getting worse and noticed the 4 spot welds on the bottom of the brace have cracked and broken also. As a auto technician I see problems with vehicle all the time and this is a huge safety concern if the brace as to break off completely the vehicle would loose braking capabilities and the ability for the clutch to disengage the engine from the transmission in an emergency I have noticed on multiple forums that there are a lot of owners with the same problem. I feel as Subaru should perform a recall/repair for this issue as to not have vehicles being unsafe to drive. If needed I can supply pictures of my vehicle and the point of failure.
Metal on metal popping started for apparently no reason. Intermittent, inconsistent and difficult to replicate. Noise stopped after warmer weather started. Noticeable changes in shifting begin to occur. Approximately three months later, shifting begins to become difficult. Synchronization of gears when shifting begins to fault and gear scratching can be heard. Still inconsistent, no immediate indication repairs are needed. Several weeks go by and suddenly shifting is extremely difficult. Gear matching and synchronization is no longer smooth and scratches gears often. Often not possible to shift in to reverse while car is running. It has now been identified that the spot welding that holds the clutch pedal assembly has broken free from the mounting points under the dashboard. The entire pedal assembly now bends and flexes preventing proper clutch play and throw, preventing clutch from completely disengaging transmission.
The clutch pedal on my 2008 Impreza Wrx feels gritty and makes a loud creaking noise every time it's depressed.
Car was in the shop for another service when this issue was brought to my attention. The tech showed me how the pedal assembly would move when the clutch pedal was pressed, caused by the welds on the pedal assembly breaking and becoming disconnected from the firewall. He informed me that this was an issue that had started occurring on several same make and model cars. The issue has progressively gotten worse, there is an audible click and squeak/creak when pressing and releasing the clutch pedal.
Welds holding pedal assembly to firewall are broken, squeaking clutch, very hard to get into gear, break pedal moving when using clutch.
Said bracket ripped almost in half on one side. It's about a 3 inch tard from a factory drilled hole in bracket. Now the clutch pedal will not fully return and brake pedal moves sideways.
Some time last summer my clutch pedal began making a light squeak upon disengagement. I played it off for a good bit of time as a hinge or spring on the pedal assembly, but after lubing it some, I noticed it was the bulkhead flexing. The noise is also becoming more of a constant as time goes on. After some research I noticed the quantity of people having this issue and was shocked with the typical Subaru dealership response that was reported. The noise is still quite intermittent, but has been more common as of late. I intend to go to the dealership soon to see if this can be remedied. No tsbs have been released detailing this issue short of one tech tip back in 2009 that did not even point to the bulkhead mount as the source of a pedal noise. I do have to say it is rather disappointing that no measures have been taken to even attempt to get owners to bring cars in for an under the table recall, since this can result in serious issues such as a clutch that cannot be disengaged. The implications of that can go from bad (not being able to leave the drive way) to pretty catastrophic (cruising on the highway and not being able to shift to neutral or other gears).
The clutch pedal was making a lot of noise, progressively getting worse over the years that I've owned this car. I took it to the dealership and they adjusted the pedal assembly. The noise came back shortly after so I took it to the dealership again and they replaced the pedal assembly. Once again, the noise came back, but this time it was worse than ever. The dealership is saying the clutch pedal mount has had all welds fail that attach it to the firewall. Subaru needs to address this as it seems many owners have this same issue.
2009 stock wrx with 66k miles on it, but problem (squeak) started at about 38k miles. I only drive surface streets and have never tracked/raced/etc my wrx. My clutch assembly squeaks and shifts whenever I depress/release the clutch pedal, regardless of vehicle speed or pedal speed. I've lubricated the various hinges with standard lithium grease which removed a very small portion of the noise, but the squeak is still prominent. Brake pedal moves to the left as I depress the clutch pedal more. Clutch master cylinder flexes in and out on the firewall whenever I depress/release the clutch pedal- this might also lead to early failure of the master cylinder due to misalignment of the piston from the supporting structure flexing (not to mention the supporting structure flexing way too much for standard operation). I'm concerned that my pedal assembly's supporting structure will fail, leaving the clutch pedal and possibly the brake pedal (if it's also supported by it which it seems it is) useless while driving: an extremely hazardous and life-threatening situation.
About a year ago I started hearing a creaking noise. Only recently the noise had gotten worse so being a mechanic myself I decided I would take a few days and remove my dash board to pinpoint the noise since it had gotten worse lately. After removing the dash I could clearly see that the pedal assembly was bolted to a thin bracket that was welded to the main body frame. When I removed the pedals the bracket just fell right out. No weld was holding my clutch and brake pedal. I was amazed that the assembly never fell off while I was driving it for a year. Mind you the clutch was original and modifications was a simple air cleaner. I decided to rescuer it to the frame with machine nuts and bolts. After I assembled it there was still play in the pedal assembly and only a few weeks later the noise had returned. I guess the bracket needs to be secured better but this is why I'm concerned. One the noise is unbearable and two it's just not safe it could brake off again the move the brake pedal enough to cause someone to miss the pedal and accelerate into an accident.
My clutch pedal has been clicking at the extent of depressing the pedal since I bought the car from a Subaru dealership two years ago. I didn't think much of it because of how regularly it happened. About a month ago, it started to get louder and also began squeaking. I took it to a nearby dealership and they informed me it was probably a cracked weld on the firewall, which they had seen before. My car is just out of warranty, but they would not fix the problem even though it had been happening long before the warranty expired. The dealership quoted me $1,200 - $1,500, which is outrageous for something that is apparently a known issue with this model Subaru. I learned that this is a well documented issue and I am going to take my case up with Subaru.
Soa gold plus added security 7 year/100,000 mi contract coverage so extensive it's easier to list what is not covered! 2002 wrx 64,500 mi now at metric Subaru dix hills, NY blew out trans/man clutch assembly & wants $3,600. Metric replaced manual clutch ass 62,980 mi, costing $1,175 & brought back car less than 400 mi later because of crunching when shifting in first & reverse & wasn't fixed because metric couldn't verify complaint. Few days later gear stuck in reverse & car wouldn't budge while in the middle of street. Subaru towed car to metric, couldn't verify complaint as gear became unstuck. New years day, with dropped clutch pedal couldn't get into gear so Subaru towed car back to metric. Upon calling soa received # 1072552 from les handley and after signing $500. Auth tear down chg was then told trans/man clutch assembly blown out/ gears stripped/chipped. Soa refuses to authorize dealer to fix the car asserting abused car and driven aggressively. Metric explained manual trans a problem and we see researching website, numerous complaints nearly same identical story of trans & man clutch assembly blown out/gears stripped/chipped with soa denying repairs asserting abuse. Is it possible every owners tale of woe is a lie? Subaru replaced our trans 29,068 mi after finding gears, synros and sleeves defective. Subaru three months later at 29,740 mi found transmission leaking, seeing transmission case porous & replaced it. 42,546 mi Subaru replaced worn reverse trans shift rail and clip. Soa customer care rep, patricia hung up on us while we tried to obtain satisfaction on claim for repairs under service contract, stating dealership service reps informed her we abused the car and drove it aggressively, a fact they out and out denied to our face when confronted on that matter. Service rep informed us they sent pics and a description of the problem and requested authorization for repair & was denied with our service rep feeling soa was looking to avoid this extremely explosive issue.

Under normal city driving and highway commuting the transmission and clutch pedal stopped delivering power on the highway. I managed to safely get off the highway and had the car towed to dealership. Dealer refused to cover worn clutch under warranty despite wear items covered under the 3 year//36000 mile coverage. Car was around 20000 miles. Dealer gave me a feeling that I was discriminated against because I was a young man with a sporty car, therefore, I must race it and abuse it. I have old parts in my garage. They did, however, cover brake pads at another time.

2002 wrx wagon. Manual shift. Clutch problems on daily basis, no matter if the car is properly warmed up or cold. Car shudders. Also, it's hard to shift from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 2nd. Even when the clutch pedal is fully pressed, grinding sound appears. There's no specific pattern in this behaviour. It happens randomly during driving or moving from a full stop.
