Subaru Legacy owners have reported 34 problems related to brake electric antilock (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Legacy based on all problems reported for the Legacy.
04/30/05 problem began. At low speeds, the brakes were not responding and caused extended stopping distance and the steering felt out of control. An accident occurred on 05/07/05. At 35 mph coming around a curve on a rainy day, the consumer tried to slow down, but brakes locked, and the consumer slid with no steering ability. The consumer couldn't keep the car on the road. She went off the road and head on collision with a tree occurred. Total loss of vehicle. Slight injuries to driver, no other cars involved.

Excessive brake repairs. I have had to replace my brakes every 30,000 miles. I have never had a car or truck that has needed to have all the components of the braking system replaced with such frequency. While at the dealer another owner was complaining to service about the same issue.

2004 Subaru Legacy experiencing problems with anti-lock brake system. The consumer stated the abs locked up the brakes/wheels and caused the vehicle to slide and the consumer was unable to steer the vehicle. The rear defroster was inoperative.
We are going down a steep dirt road using 1st gear. To slow the vehicle. The vehicle automatically speeds up, and we have to jam on the brakes hard to slow down. Happens intermittently. Rpms change from normal 2200-3200 to 4500-5000.
When driving pressed on brakes and very abruptly engine downshifted. Also, when stopping abruptly consumer lurched forward in seat. Contact dealer dealer stated it was common in 1999 vehicle. Please add VIN.

While son was driving traveling at approximately 35 mph, consumer went to apply brakes so as to negotiate a 90 degree turn, and brake pedal went to the floor, and failed to engage brake system. Vehicle went straight into a concrete wall . Driver and a passenger were injured. Please provide any additional information/attachments. *state farm insurance was investigating this case.
Once vehicle was turned and consumer put vehicle in drive, vehicle accelerated, even though consumer had his foot on brake pedal. An independent mechanic who examined the vehicle stated that under full throttle, the brakes do not stop the vehicle and the brake system was not operating properly.

Brakes did not work when driver braked to avoid accident on road ahead. Driver had to swerve off road into ditch, sliding down slope and impacting culvert and causing extensive damage to car. Car towed away. Car repaired at springfield va Subaru dealer, and completely checked out. Several weeks later, car brought in to dealer to address brake concerns (shuddering, noise), dealer said brakes were ok. Car brought in again for continuing brake concerns, dealer then said all 4 brakes needed replacement at cost of about $800. We contacted Subaru customer service regarding this, they refused to communicate a reply to us until only after repeated calling. They told us they would refuse to provide any refund on the brake work (we thought the repair excessive in cost). My concern is there is a brake flaw with the Subaru Legacy outback that is not being acknowledged by Subaru. We have also had the car suddenly accelerate when stopped at idle at stoplight, requiring strong brake force to restrain the car from moving.

This car accelerated suddenly and spontaneously while I was shifting from reverse to drive;the brakes had no effect in slowing the car down and I had to crash into a concrete post to stop the car and avoid hitting other cars and pedestrians. The car is totaled and I am lucky to have survived.

Consumer stated that compared to other cars it feels like there is too much room between braking and actually stopping. Also, brakes feel spongy. Consumer is afraid of getting into an accident. It may be the abs brakes. Repairs have been attempted, but problem still exists.
While applying brakes to stop about 5 mph, consumer bumped into vehicle in front, and both air bags deployed without a prior warning.
While driving 50mph had gradually applied the brakes, and abs brakes locked up when entering ramp exit. Vehicle skidded out of control and hit a concrete wall. Vehicle was declared totaled.
Abs does not seem to slow or stop vehicle quick enough, in emergency situation.
First instance was in Dec 98, 2nd 6-21-99 cruise control stays on, cannot cancel or turn off, brakes go to the floor with no effect what so ever, have to turn the ignition key off and restart the engine in order to get out of cruise and get the brakes back (this is a little scarry when you have power steering). This was a life and death situation in traffic at highway speed on an approach to a severe turn on a exit ramp.
When applying the abs brakes in cold weather conditions pedal goes to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, cause unknown.
Extended stopping distance under full braking pressure -- caused rear-end collision.
While driving on the highway at 45mph another vehicle pulled out in front. Consumer hit brakes on dry pavement and wheels locked up/vehicle skidded. Contact dealer, was not able to help. When going downhill and some what slippery surface, such as snow, the brakes would lock up and the vehicle kept on sliding down the hill. Replaced the brake rotors, front brakes only, and tires still having the same problem.
When driving at 45 mph vehicle veered to the right and lifted up, and all power went to the front side. Consumer applied abs brakes, and vehicle wouldn't stop, causing vehicle to skid and run into a house. Upon impact, driver's side and passenger's side air bags didn't deploy.
Driving at approximately 20 mph , began applying brakes, vehicle did not stop, or slow down, resulting in a rear end collision, airbags also did not deploy.
When sitting at a light with foot on brakes, brakes go straight to the floor, and vehicle is moving forward. Also, when consumer is driving and if another vehicle stops in front of the consumer, and consumer applies the brakes, vehicle won't stop. Consumer has to go around the other vehicle to avoid hitting it. Occurs in winter. Consumer experienced two near collisions because brakes did not engage and stop vehicle. Both situations were at 25 mph.
Brakes are not stopping vehicle. It has to be stopped by taking the brakes off the abs system. Dealer was contacted and stated there was nothing they could do.
While driving down highway approached an area where had to slow down. While attempting to slow down, tapped brakes and immediately went into a skid, brakes locked up. No injuries were sustained.
Antilock brakes locked up, causing brakes to overheat/smoke.
While driving on a rocky surface the abs brakes did not lock. Please describe.
Abs brakes replaced three times.
While driving with cruise engaged, attempted to brake and to disengage cruise control, there was no response, cruise continued, upon pressing harder on brake pedal, vehicle wheels locked up, went into skid, hit barrier at approx. 65mph, not fixed.
The front brake rotors warped, causing the brakes to become mushy, resulting in extended stopping distance. The dealer and manufacturer have been notified.
The abs brakes do not perform well in snow and ice. While applying brakes in these road conditons, vehcile will not stop. Dealer noted that vehicle is operating to specs.
When I purchased the car last year I asked about the brakes. To engage the brakes the pedal had to be depressed almost all the way to the floor. The salesmen stated thats this was normal. Since the purchase, I had an accident where I rear ended someone. In September the rotors on the car were resurfaced at 16,000 miles. At the same time the dealer told me about the sevice bulletin "low brake pedal perception". The service people adjusted the brakes per bulletin 06-29-00. There is a major difference in the way the brakes operate since the adjustment. The bulletin states it is a perception problem. I have been driving for 30 years. This is a real safety issue not a perception. In the 2001 models the brakes operate very differently. They engage very quickly when you push the pedal down!.
Anti lock brakes lock up on occasions causing extended stopping distances.
Intermittently when brakes are applied pedal goes to the floor, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer has inspected vehicle, and manufacturer will be notified.
While driving vehicle at low speed and upon using brakes haad to press completely to floor before vehicle will come to complete stop. Please provide any further information.
When traveling at any speed and upon attemting to make a normal stop on wet pavement or in cold weather conditions, brake pedal traveled to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance, and resulting in an accident. Consumer has contacted dealer. Dealer wa sunable to determine the cause of the problem. Please provide any further details.
