1 Power Window problem of the 2000 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 12/09/2013

Driving to work car running for approximately 20 min. The window control switch inside the driver side door smoked and quickly caught fire. I immediately slowed down and pulled over to the right shoulder and turned off the card. I opened the door and stepped out. Within a few seconds the panel on the car door also caught fire and starting melting. I had beach towel in the back of the car, and tried to smother the fire with the towel, but quickly decided the fire was too large, growing too quickly and was actually inside the door. I gave up on the towel, and in last ditch effort to the save the car I grabbed, and tore off the plastic door panel and threw it to ground. Some of the melted plastic from the door panel did get on my hands, and I received several burns to my fingers that required medical attention. I was then able to extinguish the remaining fire. The car is currently at a body shop for repair. The damage to the car appears to be limited to the driver's side door.

2 Power Window problem of the 2001 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/24/2002

Front passenger window glass exploded when door was opened. There were no other factors involved; the door was simply opened. Nothing struck the glass and the glass had not been previously compromised. Person injured was 16 year old girl. Injuries consisted of cuts to face, scratched cornea and cut underneath eyelid from embedded glass fragments. Dealer service manager and manufacturer representative rejected any notion that there were defects in either the glass itself or the window mechanism.

5 Power Window problem of the 1998 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 12/01/1998

The rollers for the power windows are collecting dirt and leaving a vertical scratchalong the length of the window. When I contacted the service department in my area I was told this would not be covered under my warranty because the district service manager for Subaru had determined the damage was caused from dirt on the windows. This seems odd to me because the Subaru Legacy is the only vehicle I have seen this problem on and other cars in my area are not suffering from this problem. I have had no luck with Subaru or my dealer in solving this problem. I was told I could pay $50 to have my door assembly taken apart to clean the rollers and pay $200-$300 per window to replace the window. If this problem existed on other makes or models I could accept the explaination that I need to keep the dirt off of my car, but that is not the case. I feel Subaru should replace the rollers and window under my warranty.
