1 Transmission Noise problem of the 2013 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/03/2020

There was a horrible whining that started very quiet on and off in 2017 and became louder this year. We drove into a city intersection to turn, and the car stalled. We were lucky that we didn't get hit by another car. We took it to the dealership as we do all recommended maintenance and something was really wrong to make it stall like that. The dealership said that it is a cvt transmission, and they are known to have this problem. Told us to call Subaru. There was an extended warranty offered in 2018, but we never were notified of that and are the original owner. If we had the notification we would have had this fixed as it occasionally made the noise but it did not repeat when at our service center. We would have had the dealer check it if we knew about the problem and warranty. I expected a Subaru to last longer than this before needing an $9,000 repair. Called Subaru and they offered me $1,000 toward a new Subaru. I paid $36,000 for this car. I don't think $1,000 off one now is going to help me very much for a known problem with this transmission that put us in a very dangerous situation.

2 Transmission Noise problem of the 2010 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

While driving the car, it frequently jolts, makes a screeching noise and it is scary because it also feels as though it may simply turn off. I have contacted the dealership from which I purchased the vehicle and I was informed that Subaru is aware of the issue and that they would likely take care of repairing the transmission ($7,000). However, Subaru has contacted me with the offer to pay only $2,500 of the total amount of the repair. My major concern is that Subaru recalled these (cvt) transmissions, beginning with 2012 models; however, they are aware that the problem also exists in the 2010 outback and Legacy, both of which my husband and I own and drive, respectively.

3 Transmission Noise problem of the 2016 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 07/05/2017

In less than 36,000 miles it developed a grinding noise that can be felt above 50 mph. Dealer found a problem with the auto transmission. It will being replaced under warranty. Strange, I thought Subaru is known for better transmission. In the same car the cd player stopped working and making noise similar to what you hear when a cd is being ejected. Dealer changed it under warranty. I received a recall letter on dcm software in the car & I took car to the dealer. However, this recall is not listed on web. Why?.

4 Transmission Noise problem of the 2013 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/10/2016

About mid September my son took the car in due to a noise he heard, was advised that it was the serpentine belt & needed to be replaced. Had the recommended service done. . Heard noise again and returned car, was advised "tech can not duplicate noise". Took car back 3rd time and made tech get into car with him to go for ride. . Tech now hears noise and advises my son to leave the car, you'll have it back in an hour. A couple hours later he gets a call advising that they couldn't diagnose the problem and would contact a field engineer to respond to this dealership and would give him a loaner car. When asked over the phone whether he could drive his car he was advised the "car was unsafe". We were advised that the transmission problem was diagnosed over the phone when we went to pick up the loaner car. When asked if we are getting a refund for a replacement belt that was not bad we were advised that "there was a known problem with the belts but there was no recall". Noise would start at 15mph and above.
