Subaru Outback owners have reported 82 problems related to air bag light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Outback based on all problems reported for the Outback.
The battery started failing after less than 8000 miles on the car that is less than a year old. It left us stranded multiple times and jump start was required. Once upon jump starting the car the power steering was not functional. Multiple times the airbag failure indicator stayed on for the entire trip. Initially it was not clear to me what is going on as the whole electrical system went haywire and the car was producing a clattering noise instead of the usual starting noise. Eventually I tested the battery and it became evident that it failed. There are many such reports on the internet and also class action lawsuits against Subaru due to their failure to address the underlying design flaws of the car. I hope that the NHTSA will force Subaru to properly analyze the problem, come up with a proper fix and issue a recall to address this issue with obvious safety aspects.

2007 Subaru Outback airbag light is on. Subaru customer service says the airbag system will not function if the airbag light is on. This defect should be covered for no charge. Please issue a safety recall. The airbag light is on under all conditions after starting the vehicle.
The car's air bag light came on. It was recalled for an air bag issue one or two years ago so I took the car to the Subaru dealership to fix the issue. But now this light came on about a month ago. It turns off at times, but it comes back on eventually.

We have experience a multitude of electrical issues with the ll bean version of the 2207 Outback. Most recently the airbag light staying on consistently, which appears to be a reported issue. This is a safety issue since the air bag will not function with the light on, it is costly to repair over $400 + diagnostic of $115. Several weeks ago, it would com eon intermittently, no it remains on 100% of the time. I commute 100 miles each day 5 days a week on a two-lane, rural highway and worry I need to get rid of the vehicle sooner than later due to a safety issue. This only passing the safety issue to a new owner. This safety issue should be Subaru's responsibility to fix as there are many that cannot afford such a fix and is not regular maintenance. This should never be an issue. Not sure if I would buy a Subaru again after owning this one. The other issue is with the rear wire harness that controls the rear defroster, etc. $800 to replace this after we had diagnostics completed during our last tune up. Seems as though there are many faulty electronic assembly issues that were not of the highest quality - maybe a taping or soldering issue. Hopefully it doesn't spark and start a fire. . . .
Red airbag light . Dealer diagnosis code b1650. Response is to replace the bottom part of passenger seat. 1840. 00 repair. This happened about a year after they replaced the airbag related to takata recall. Soa has offered 1000. 00 in good will gesture . Saw a recall in 2015 for impreza wagons throwing off b1650 code. Was told by soa not to drive my Outback as this is a safety issue. I totally agree, but also think that a 6 year old Outback should not be having this kind of safety issue . I am unable to repair due to the costly repair and in my opinion this is Subaru's responsibility to fix! there is no possible way I could have caused this malfunction.

After passenger air bag replacement airbag light would come on intermittently. Now airbag light stays on. Also found moisture from a/c being on under the dashboard after passenger air bag was replaced. Airbag light stays on all the time until car is turned off. Moisture from a/c is when a/c is on anytime.
Air bag light stayed on after engine start. Research indicated that the solder joints on the circuit board located in the overhead console fail over time (the same board that contains the indicator lights for the passenger air bag status). Apparently the air bag system is disabled when the air bag light stays on - meaning that none of the air bags may work if the circuit board becomes defective. Replacement board, if found, is over $300. I repaired mine by re-soldering the various bad contact points on the board.
Bought this car used from a dealer as is . I was told of a recall for air bag wich is showing zero for recalls. The air bag light in the car is red though .
Cold rainy morning, I started the car for the first time with no one in the passenger seat. The airbag light came on and stayed on, the passenger seatbelt light is on and car is dinging like someone in the passenger seat is not wearing a seat belt. Does not turn off when seat belt is clipped. I take it to the dealership and they say it's a bad electrostatic capacitance sensor ods. The 'part' aka replacing the whole seat is $900. Same year of Subaru that they recalled this part in the impreza. Nhtsa recall no. : 15v-419.
Airbag replaced as per recall, but not long therafter, the airbag light went on and won't go off. Apparently, this is a common problem, and Subaru should cover it. Also, rear wheel bearings failing at 48k, very low mileage for them to need to be replaced.

Passenger airbag "not working" light came on. Took it to dealer where I purchased the vehicle, was informed that although 2012 Subaru Outbacks had been recalled in texas, they were not recalled in oklahoma due to lesser humidity conditions. Paid nearly $500 to have wires which had come unplugged under console plugged back together. This took around 7 hours to get accomplished. At least 1/2 of this time was shown as "diagnostic. " the "passenger airbag light and intermittant beeper remained on constantly, whether the seat was occupied or not, and whether vehicle was running, moving, or at rest, turned off.
Tl the contact owns a 2007 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated. Through online research, the contact found that the map light needed to be replaced in order for the air bag indicator to turn off. Liberty auto city Subaru (1000 e park Ave, libertyville, IL 60048, (847) 362-3800) confirmed that the map light needed to be replaced in order for the air bag indicator to turn off. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 97,000.
Original soldering in overhead center console where passenger airbag on/off light is located was loose causing the airbag light on the dash to turn on. It seems to be a widespread issue with this generation of Subaru Outback. With the airbag light illuminated on the dash the airbags may not go off in an accident causing a major safety concern.
My airbag light on the dashboard has been turning on and off with no apparent consistency since the beginning of January. Sometimes, its on, sometimes not, I made an appt to take it to a Subaru dealer, months ago, then a couple days before, it went off and stayed off for many weeks. (I had cancelled the appt. ) then it came on again, so I took it to a Subaru dealer that day and they diagnosed it as a problem with the overhead map light assembly. They scanned the system and found code 26. Apparently the airbag sensor runs through that assembly and there is a connection that wears out and becomes disconnected, resulting in the airbag not being able to deploy when needed. The Subaru service rep said that is a common problem and they have made many of those repairs. Upon researching this on the internet, I found numerous complaints of this problem and that Subaru dealers charge between $200-$500 to repair this. There are also videos and instructions on how to fix this by taking apart the assembly and re-soldering the connection. My concern is that this seems to be happening to Subarus that have low mileage as well as some with higher mileage. Many of the complaints seem to come from people who live in areas where it is very cold in the winter, which is my case. I have been told that when illuminated the airbag will nor deploy. This naturally scares people so they opt for the repair ASAP. This appears to be a frequent problem and is a grave safety concern that Subaru should address. I believe that a recall should be issued!.
The seat sensor for the passenger side is not working in cold weather, causing the airbag to be deactivated. The seatbelt indicator signal beeps regardless of whether someone is sitting in the seat with the seatbelt on or no one is sitting in the seat. This happens when the vehicle is in motion and happens any time the temperature in the vehicle is below freezing.

Takata recall this vehicle has been in a auto shop since 12/7/16 and after diagnostics the mechanic is still unable to repair. The airbag light is still on. Both side curtain air bags, both side impact sensors, and the air bag module were replaced. The codes are f2-side sensor bus lh communication error. Ea-side sensor bus rh communication. 41-side air bag rh failure. 27 ods communication error. Cannot clear any codes still. Then installed test harnesses at air bag control module and ods and right seat air bag module. Performed ohm test - need to start with ods and both side airbag modules. Still did not clear air bag light. So the car is unsafe to drive. Please inspect this vehicle ASAP this is costing a fortune. I do not know how to upload any thing or I would try.
Airbag light on. Diagnosed as code 26. Dealer recommended replacing overhead console due to faulty led light for passenger airbag indicator. Estimated $300 part. Ended up finding a cracked solder joint and resoldering. Premature failure.
The contact owns a 2006 Subaru Outback. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle experienced a loss of power and all the warning indicators illuminated. After pulling the vehicle over to the side of the road, waiting a brief period, and manually restarting the vehicle, it became operable again. The failure occurred on three occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,655.
The contact owns a 2009 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the air bag warning indicator illuminated intermittently during hot weather. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front passenger side air bag warning indicator failed. The mechanic did not specify if the air bag module or inflater was the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
The seat sensor for the passenger side is not working causing the airbag to be deactivated. The seatbelt indicator signal beeps regardless of whether someone is sitting in the seat with the seatbelt on or no one is sitting in the seat. It is failing to sense any weight. I bought this car brand new on 9/9/13 and this should not be faulty.
Airbag light at the lower l side of the instrument cluster remains illuminated. Annoying chime sounds the entire time the car is on. I've read online that the problem lies in a pcb up by the map lights. Will check the solder on all resisters and leds on that pcb. Most who reflow the solder claim this resolves the issue. Subaru of America wan'ts $300+ to replace the entire overhead console.
Takata recall - the car was recalled 3 times. The mechanic said as long as the airbag light was on, the airbag would not work. He said the fix was not included in the recall.
There's seems to be a common issue with the wiring on 2005-2009 Subaru Outback/legacy models that affects both the airbag and the locking mechanism. I have seen multiple threads online where the airbag indicator light comes on specifically indicating that the passenger airbag may be affected and sensors may be faulty? there is also a common error in the electrical system in which when you lock the car - all locks activate with the exception of the rear tailgate which poses a safety risk or total theft of the car. These problems occur upon vehicle ignition and when the car is on or off (for the locking).
The passenger seat airbag indicator, with an adult sitting in the seat, randomly shows the airbag on/off. There is no consistency to whether the airbag will show as functioning, which makes the system non-functioning by any measure. This is a key safety feature that Subaru advertises and sells vehicles by and it simply does not function. Subaru has not acknowledged that there is an issue and their service department claims that they cannot find and error code indicating there is an issue. The implication being that I am making up the issue. This seems to be a similar issue to what was outlined in the 2012 Subaru impreza airbag sensor recall. Both cases involve the passenger airbag sensor failing with an adult sitting in the seat. If you never know if the airbag is going to work, it is a failure of the system. This isn't a problem that is going to be recognized or fixed without a mandatory recall or a lawsuit.

The contact owns a 2008 Subaru Outback. While driving at various speeds, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the failure would occur intermittently. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of failure. The failure mileage was 62,000.
Sometimes the airbag light comes on either when the car is started or once it's driving. It's very sporadic.
Hi, I'm writing you to to inform you of a safety issue with the 05-09 Subaru Outback airbag system. The passenger airbag notification board, located in the dome light assembly is assembled with poor quality solders between the board and diodes, this results in failure of the board, this is often seen in lower temperatures when the solders crack due to thermal contraction. When one of these solders fails, it causes 2 issues, 1, the indicator lights don't come on correctly, and 2, the entire airbag system is disabled. This is an issue known to the Subaru owners community. My dealer wants about $260 to fix it. Thanks.
Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the air bag light remains illuminated which disabled the air bags. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 85,000. Ad.
