1 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/16/2020

Due to a well-known design flaw the engine had a severe head gasket leak. The leak lead to a foaming of the coolant and a pressure break in the coolant reservoir. The car had a catastrophic failure on the freeway and could have lead to a serious accident. The car was serviced the previous August by a dealer. They have refused to answer my direct question if they did a flushing of the system which could have led to the damage but, it is a well-known problem that the Subaru 4 cylinder 2. 5 l engine has had a severe flaw in its design.

2 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/06/2019

Since the car has been brand new, a half gallon of coolant has needed to be added to the car on a monthly basis. No leaks have been detected. There has always been a very strong odor of burning coolant. Dealer states this is normal for the 2. 5l engine, so there is nothing to repair, just keep an eye on the coolant level. I filed a complaint with Subaru of north America, and received a similar response. Both the dealer and Subaru state it is unknown how to repair this issue as they can not identify the problem causing the loss of coolant. Dealer just keeps topping off the system, and stating that they still have no solution.

3 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/25/2019

Coolant is leaking onto top of engine block in two places. It looks to be leaking where the coolant crossover pipe connects to the engine both sides.

4 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/27/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle started to overheat and the coolant temperature warning indicator illuminated. The contact also stated that there was fuel leaking from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to vic bailey Mazda Subaru (400 e daniel morgan Ave, spartanburg, SC 29302, (864) 568-3338) where it was diagnosed that the head gasket was leaking and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 220,000.

5 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/23/2016

I purchased vehicle brand new, over the course of 4 years have had no problems until brake master went bad after 2 and a half years, oil not lasting until the next oil change and finally the head gasket. The vehicle's a/c died and was taken to the mechanic, he found the compressor had gone. We ordered a new one. Took the vehicle out the next day to return it to mechanic and in route, the vehicle began smoking profusely and died on the road 2 minutes after it began smoking. The vehicle is then towed to mechanic to find that the oil and coolant were mixing, the vehicle overheated and damaged head gasket. This make & model has also been found to have issues with "faulty brake masters & leaking oil leading to coolant and head gasket" issues. No recall, safety or advisement information has ever been sent or corresponded to us regarding this matter. There is however an open class action suit in new jersey for the issue of leaking oil and cooling issues.

6 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/07/2015

After 28,000 miles and noticed at drive through locations the sickly sweet smell of antifreeze was noticed. I took car to dealer who pressure tested and inspected coolant system. Nothing unusual was noticed and no leaks were discovered. Drove car later in the day and smell returned, will drive more and if smell is noticed again will return to dealer. Could arise from oil changes and if leveling the fluid level the spill burnoff could be where the smell comes from. . . When starting car the engine revs at a high speed but that is normal from this particular vehicle so after starting I pause a bit before shifting and driving. Other than the antifreeze smell the car is a pleasure to drive.

7 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

The head gasket is leaking coolant into the oil. Advised not to drive the car until head gasket replaced. Subaru used in 2007 a paper gasket which has been found not to hold up. New had gasket much stronger. Trying to get Subaru to warranty this serious safety problem. The car has only 43,800 miles on it.

8 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2003 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

Subaru has been selling cars knowing of premature head gasket failures. 1998 to 2002 head gaskets failed with internal and external coolant leaks. Subaru has issued the wwp99 campaign (upto 8 yr 100,000 mile). This campaign introduces an additive into the coolant to "plug" the leak. They also will repair the gaskets in rare cases. The 2003 head gaskets are also failing prematurely even with proper maintenance. These fail with an external oil leak that directly hits the exhaust causing fire hazard and noxious fumes in and around the car. The repair is $2000 at dealer. Subaru is not addressing this.

9 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2003 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

Head gasket failure***** 2003 Outback **** this is not a new problem as four of the Subaru's we've owned had hg issues. Although in the past Subaru acknowledged the failures and repaired them under the wwp99 campaign (1998-2002 model years). While this failure continues to be widespread (just google Subaru head gasket problems and you'll get pages of complaints of hg failures) Subaru has stopped repairing them or even acknowledging there is a problem. This appears to be solely a cost saving strategy. When the gaskets fail, oil leaks outside the engine which contacts the exhaust system. The burning oil puts smoke and fumes inside the car. I would think this is also a fire concern. Inside the engine, oil and coolant mix and can cause catastrophic damage/failure. Is there anything I can do to get this repaired by Subaru? they seem to be getting away with a huge consumer injustice just by acting like it doesn't exist. Can they be required extent the champagne (wwp99) with the 03 and later models? Subaru clearly acknowledges a head gasket problem in previous years and later model years have the same failure.

10 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2004 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

Blown headgasket at only 40k. Car has been maintained on a regular schedule with extra care car when needed. Took to dealer and complained of smell of coolant in the interior of car when driving and after shutting vehicle down or at a traffic light stop. Took to dealer complaining of a noise coming from the bottom of engine. After the dealer examined vehicle nothing was found as per report. I took the car for brake repair and the mechanic noted a coolant leak from the left bank of the engine block. He stated that he car has a blown headgasket on the left bank of the cylinder block. The warranty on the powertrain is about to run out and he advised to return the vehicle to the dealer for the repair. He did state that the dealer will only repair the bank that is leaking and the other would not be covered and should be done at the same time to prevent the other bank from blowing out due to a change in the balance of pressure on the block resulting from the replacement of only one headgasket.

12 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2003 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/27/2007

Head gasket developed a coolant leak. It was less than 30 days from the warranty running out. The dealership did the warranty work but said they could not do the other head gasket because it had not failed and the warranty would not allow them to replace it. It only makes sense if the one side failed that the other side was right behind it.

13 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/05/2006

14 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/11/2006

At 69,013 miles, the driver side head gasket is leaking coolant. We first noticed the problem due to the odor.

15 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/27/2005

I own a 2000 Subaru Outback limited. The car has approx 45,000 miles on it and I am the original owner. I have kept the car up to date with regular maintenance. I used to take the car to the Subaru dealership where I purchased it but they never completed the work I requested and paid for (I. E. Little things like making sure there was enough coolant in the car, etc). Was having a strong burning odor from my car for about a week or two. Got the car into a mechanic today who specializes in Subaru automobiles. I found that I had a cracked head gasket that was leaking oil externally. Upon further research, I found that Subaru seems to have, what I believe to be, a defective gasket in their automobiles with the 2. 5l engines. I contacted Subaru of America to see if they will help reimburse my cost of repair. My car is only 5 years old and only has about 45,000 miles on it!! in my opinion, I believe that Subaru is claiming that they can fix this problem by recalling the cars and running a sealant through the coolant system. I believe this is a bad cover-up. Could you imagine if Subaru had to recall thousands of cars to replace a defective part like a gasket? their incompetent dealerships wouldn't be able to handle it! please help if you can. I really hope I'm not wasting your time. As I mentioned, I truly believe there is a problem with these cars and Subaru is not addressing it. Thanks.

16 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Drivers side head gasket leaked. Only that side was replaced. On 1/14 both head gaskets started leaking at 59000 miles. With Subarus help the dealer charged $ 855. 00. The problem is Subaru has a design defect in this engine so those of us who own these cars are going to have to pay for gasket replacements for as long as we own them. By the way the coolant system conditioner is holts radweld stopleak something Subaru will not tell you.

17 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/21/2004

Engine coolant leaks. Now 90,000 miles. This has been leaking since new or shortly after causing a hot antifreeze smell like it is drippng on the exhaust. Dealer never could find the problem until after the recall. They added the stop leak solution but it continues to smell and use some fluid. Dealer says that Subaru has an option to replace head gaskets, but dealer is reluctant to do it. I am having to now get tough about it. I had to pay for a new engine in my wifes 1998 Outback due to the same problem. Upset because it was just in for full service check prior to warranty expiring. Subaru has extended the warranty to 100,000 for this problem but I am nearly past that now. I don't want them to put it off until after warranty. I have also submitted complaint about sensors and catalytic converter problems.

18 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1998 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/22/2004

Complaint received via e-mail. The temperature gauge was in the hot range while driving. The cooling system checked out okay, but was told that the car was low on coolant. The consumer refilled coolant, went out of country, and 2 weeks later encountered the same problem. A month later, while driving, coolant leaked out again, and the head gasket was bad. This was a common problem with these vehicles.

19 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2004

2000 Outback wagon, 5 spd, with 48,000 miles. I've been getting a "hot" coolant smell coming from under the hood (driver's side) for about the last 1,000 miles. When the coolant reservoir ran empty I knew there was a problem and took it in to the dealer's shop. Sure enough, leaking head gasket on driver's side. When they did the repairs, the water pump was found to be leaking as well. The gasket and water pump were replaced free of charge, because the vehicle still falls under the 60k mile drivetrain warranty. My wife just bought a 2004 Outback sport, with the same 5 spd 2. 5 engine. I'm hoping Subaru has fixed the head gasket problem in the new engines, because I've been recommending these vehicles to a lot of people and now I'm starting to wonder. I live in madison; more suburu's were sold here last year than any other city. I would think that the last thing suburu of America wants is a city full of disgruntled suburu owners, but that's whats bound to happen if soa doesn't look into these reported head-gasket, clutch, and automatic transmission problems.

20 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1998 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/01/2002

The head gasket blew, which resulted in coolant leaking into the cylinder walls. While parked and turned off. The engine, which is a 2. 5 liter, must be replaced. The 2. 5 liter engine has a history of enigine failure. Has anyone made a claim? has there been research or a recall of any kind?.
