Subaru Outback owners have reported 3 problems related to crankcase (pcv) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Outback based on all problems reported for the Outback.
Check engine light has been activated seven times since the beginning of this summer (2015). Low on oil at first. Dealer changed pcv valve and topped off oil at the time of first engine light activation. Now, just had $1200 of maintenance on it at different dealer. Including change of temp sensor on Nov 2. Check engine light on again today, with difficulty starting. Difficulty starting with check engine light has been for check engine indications for last month. Dealer is confounded. I am very concerned with less than 71000 miles. Did purchase an extended warranty for 80000 miles. Did have dealer of original sale have hitch and rear view camera installed prior to delivery.

Two issues; the similarly reported electrical stop. Started car on cold morning, drove short distance, dropped kids off at school. Went to restart, and car was completely dead. Had to jump it. Second issue; burning oil smell in cabin. Oil level was fine, and smell not coming from tail pipe. Took car to shop today for the oil smell, and I told them about the electrical stop. They said the electrical issue is related to needing to replace 4 relays. The oil smell, however, is due to a bad crankcase seal that they said failed most likely due to the cold. I found similar reports on Subaruoutback. Org/forums/.

2001 Subaru Outback at 90k after 2. 5 engine is started it rattles like the valve lifters are not getting oil lubrication. It last for about 10 minutes or until the engine temp gauge is in the normal range. It does this when the engine has been sitting more that 8 hours without starting. Changing of oil in crankcase, did not change the rattling sound. Upon taking the vehicle to the Subaru dealer, the service manager informed me this was a normal character feature of 2001 and newer Subaru's that had the 2. 5 engine and was caused by piston slap in the engine. The correct the noise the owner would have to have the engine rebuilt to stop the piston slap.
