After previous repairs to transmission fluid leak and head gasket repair, the car's transmission failed and had to be rebuilt. The transmission failed as I was driving. I could not shift from first to second. I was able to get the car to the dealer by driving in first and living with a sharp clunk into second. I was close to the dealer or else this would have been a tow. If this had happened on the freeway it could have been catastrophic.

Leaking headgasket on a 6 year old Subaru Outback 2. 5 with 79,000 miles. Repair job cost of $2,000. Head gasket issues are a major complaint/defect on Subaru 2. 5 4cyl engines. Subaru should either offer to subsidize or cover major repair cost.
Subaru has recall on wheel bearings and state my Outback does not fit into recall. However it is the same part that has failed, yet they state they fixed the problem. Headgasket is leaking at 125,000, Subaru states replacement gaskets are better however I am expected to pay 2000 for the repair.

I purchased this vehicle used from a dealer. A few monthslater I started noticing a burning smell after driving even a short distance. Took it back to the place of purchase to have their service check it. They said head gaskets were leaking and quoted a repair price of $1800 ! I contacted Subaru of America after I did a research on the internet and found that many people had the same problems but there had been no recalls! some customers were lucky and did get some kind of compensation. I took it to my personal mechanic who told me he has seen a lot of these same cars with the same problem due to the way they were manufactured! I contacted Subaru of America again but they only offered a $500 discount on a new vehicle! the manufacturer should honor this complaint and pay for the gaskets replacement as it is happening in too many of these models!.
2000 Subaru Outback, 50,000 miles, head gasket leaking, have numerous complaint here and on the web. Obviously a design flaw, dealership not helpful, of course it's just out of waranty, had reccomended these to many people and friends bought them, now not so sure.

I purchased new a 2000 Subaru Outback station wagon. The engine head gaskets are leaking already. Two separate Subaru dealers and two private garages tell me the head gaskets are going in these cars left and right. There are lots of angry owners on the web. The head gaskets, very expensive to repair because the engine must be removed from the car, are going way too soon!.
Blew a head gasket which leaked antifreeze throughout the engine causing many other parts failures. For example, O2 sensors. Total cost of repairing vehicle - $4,800.
