1 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

Per Subarus bulletin 02-192-25 posed on 10-26-2024 they provided details on how to fix a leak from zone 4 for cam shaft carrier and valve cover. I have a leak from these two items noted. I have been breathing the oil fumes for who knows how long. I have had these issues confirmed by both Subaru dealership service center and an independent service center. No engine lights have been displayed or came on to indicate any of theses issues. The odor of strong oil just got worse over time and my vehicle only has 87000 original miles on it and has proper documented oil change and service every 3000 miles.

2 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/29/2021

This is the first Subaru I've ever owned and so far it's been a nightmare. I have had to repair: an oil leak in the engine that required the whole engine to be taken apart. While replacing a seemingly simple part, the hydraulic lifts that keep the back hatch open, the threading that holds the screw in broke off and I had to hire a mechanic yet again to weld that part to be able to screw in the screw to hold the lift in place. And now, the entire interior lighting doesn't work, including the stereo, all the dome lights and the remote control system. In addition to that, the rear wiper doesn't work properly.

8 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/07/2017

Ever since we bought this vehicle, about every 2,000 miles the engine oil seems to vanish, and I have to add about a quart. I run through about 7 quarts a year. When I bought the car, I asked the dealer why the oil dipstick indicated the oil level was way above the full level. The dealer just said it must have been filled too much in the last oil change. I think it was over filled so I wouldn't notice it leaking out until a few months after I bought the car. I have to keep a spare quart in the car at all times. If the dashboard warning light ever fails, I'm worried I could seize the engine.

9 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

My Subaru has a 2. 5l engine. A Subaru service center has verified the head gaskets have a severe oil leak. My car is also leaking antifreeze, my mechanic believes it is leaking from the head gaskets. I contacted Subaru of America about the issue, they will not fix the problem even though they have previously had a recall on this same issue with this same size engine back in 2002. I am stuck with a $2600 repair. I found many other people with the same issue with the same engine on different year makes of Subarus on this site. . Read more...

10 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/05/2017

I just bought a 2007 Subaru Outback from a certified Subaru dealer (stohlman Subaru in va), it had 65000 miles on it, I did all the maintenance and minor repairs on it. I paid $12,000 for the vehicle. On 2/5/2017, the check engine light started flashing so I pulled the vehicle over and had it towed to a service station. Apparently, the vehicle was out of oil despite that it wasn't due for another oil change in 1500 miles and we had checked the oil a week before and it was full. The engine has siezed up and required a new engine. No oil indicator light had come on, no smoking or overheating, and from the service station, no leaks on the vehicle. I then had it towed to another Subaru specialist service station in frederick, MD and again was told the vehicle needed a new engine. Owned the car less than a year, no leaks, no indicator of low oil, the oil just disappeared? the auto mechanics are dumbfounded at what caused this.

12 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2008 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/10/2013

Vehicle has had severe oil leaking for 4 years. Dealership informed me of head gasket problems, but only offered repair at full shop rate prices. I see this a potential fire hazard.

13 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/13/2012

Catastrophic engine failure. Apparently, a not uncommon problem (engine bearing). Vehicle under both factory and extended warranty. Subaru north America is trying to avoid fixing under warranty (again, it seems a not uncommon problem). Subaru claims oil leaked out, but oil pressure light never came on. Subaru is not dealing on the up and up.

14 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/29/2011

I recently took my Outback in to a local shop for an oil change, and they notified me that the head gasket has started to leak. Took it to the dealership for a second opinion, and they said the same thing. Called four different places, and got estimates for anywhere from $1500-$2100 (after spending $2k on other wear and tear repairs this summer). Every mechanic I spoke with was keenly aware of this problem, which obviously means this is a very common - and expensive - defect!.

15 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 1999 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/20/2001

Front crank seal fails. Causing oil leakage and possible fire under hood. Research on internet shows to be a common problem with Subarus. Research also shows Subaru has released 3 different parts in attempt to fix problem. Subaru denies this to be a fire hazard or even a problem with their vehicles.
