1 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/16/2018

Exhaust system issue. Exhaust mainfold leak at catalyst converter. For our Outback we noticed a significant levels of exhaust fumes in passenger cabin. They were no indication of failure of exhaust system or catalyst converter on the car. But we are getting some much fumes smell when we stopped at the traffic signal or parking lot. It all most made us sick. Luckily I got it checked at the service center and they find the leak. This is potentially a very risky thing for people who don't notice the smell might get slow poisoned with carbon monoxide or other elements in exhaust fumes. There may be direct injury from this issue but as I said I was almost got sick because of fumes. For people with pzev vehicle, the exhaust system is covered under warranty. Please bring this issue with manufacturing. For people out there if you notice a loud exhaust note at start of your vehicle or small rattling noise when we you accelerate after a complete stop, it might be your exhaust system, please get it checked as soon as possible. Ps attached is the diagnosis report from dealer service center be safe out there !! thank you.

2 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Engine made a sudden rattling sound that got progressively louder, then had a loud banging sound. After a few days of investigation, it was found that the torque converter bolt came loose, bounced around in my engine, damaging a plate and "taking a few 'chunks' out of the engine block, according to the mechanic. The mechanic said in his professional opinion, the only way the bolt could have been loose,is that is was not tightened properly on the assembly line. This was the first time this has ever happened to a Subaru that they are aware of. The car is 6years old and only had been driven for 5years(bought it in 2009 with 33 miles on it,as it hadn't sold in 2008), and it has only 23,000 miles on it. There is no recall, and my warrenty expired 7months ago. Subaru said they would cover half the cost of repairs, but we are still persuing options.

4 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2004 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

During early December 2010 my wife was driving the car and heard a huge rattling noise. She pulled over and we got the car towed to the dealership. We were told that the valve on the engine cylinder got damaged and as a result the valve stem has fallen into the cylinder. As the piston was moving, it got damaged. So we needed to replace two pistons. Which we did. This is a design problem as differential material expansion has caused the stem to fall and damage the piston. If this has happened on a busy highway could have been fatal. This problem has caused by bad design and using two different materials for engine valve and block. Subaru needs to recall the vehicles and fix this problem. The customers should not be paying. The car is very well maintained and had only 65,000 miles. Got it repaired. Subaru was of no help.
