1 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/05/2020

Engine stalling. When stopping at red light, engine shut down a few times. Once I lost all electricity and maneuverability of the car. I also had ignition problems. The car won't start sometimes. I brought to dealership 4-5x and my car spent a month at dealer. They cannot find the cause. I read this could be due to cvt transmission. I bought my car from a Subaru dealer two and a half years ago and only drove 7k miles. Current mileage is 95k. Subaru extended warranty of my model to 10 years for transmission. But so far they couldn't do anything. I think this should be a recall. When my car stalled, I had to call police as my car blocked the road and cause traffic jam. This is a road hazard. Thank you.

3 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/09/2018

** 2018 Subaru Outback ** this has happened three times** driving car when car shuts off complete loss of power engine turns off without warning at various speeds - seems to occur when the low fuel warning system turns on at 1/4 tank of gas. This 3rd time almost got me killed traveling at 45mpg when it happened today inside a major intersection. Software / sensor for the low fuel system? something is very seriously wrong. 1. Is this car safe to drive with a full tank of gas? 2. Has there been other complaints about this exact problem? 3. Is there a recall or fix ?.

4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/25/2018

I recently purchased a 2018 Outback. I was driving it going about 25 mph on road by my house and it shut down out of nowhere, dash lights came on, gas pedal wouldn't work, the only way I got it to go was shutting it off completely and restarting it. They car has 3500 miles, I dropped it off at the dealership on 8/25 and they have had it since. They replaced the fuel pump saying it was the cause of it shutting down on me. I received the car back on 9/21 and drove it for 180 miles, this time at 65 mph the car shutdown again while I was trying to pass someone on a 2 lane road, power steering lost and all lights came on dashboard like it had some type of electrical problem. Very similar to the first time but I was driving much faster this time. After about 30 seconds the car just kind of started up by itself without me having to push the start button I believe this issue is a huge safety issue and could possibly get me killed or someone else killed while driving this car. Subaru service facility has no clue whats going on since the car is not throwing codes. I have started the lemon law process but Subaru is not being very helpful thus far. Also having a problem with passenger seat not sensing if someone is sitting in the seat and not enabling the airbags. This problem came up on the scan on 8/25 analysis. I was unaware of the issue, nothing in the car told me passenger side airbag was not working. Subaru replaced the seat but I am still concerned that the problem is going on since I have no way to tell if it works or not.

5 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/27/2018

I was driving my child to school on a rainy morning in traffic,20-30mph on a straight road. The car stalled and then the engine shut off. (I am lucky I did not get rear ended; otherwise I would be in the hospital getting my child checked out. ) rolled over to the side of the road; as close as I could get. . Shifted into park and restarted the car. Started right up. I had a quarter tank of gas and drove three miles after that and still have enough to get to a gas station; so it is not a fuel supply issue. This is not safe!!! this is not acceptable!!!! this is a new car purchased three months ago!!! called the dealer's service rep and asked if this could be part of the issue I am having with fuel economy. I am averaging 16. 1 mpg. My 2007 Mercury millan premier awd averaged around 22. 8mpg: 10 years older and larger engine (3. 0 vs 2. 5). I also let him know that at low speeds the car is fighting as if in the wrong gear and low torque. Also there is not a smooth coast, it is almost as if the car is braking by being in the wrong gear. I have had a Toyota, Dodge, Ford, Mercury, Honda, and Hyundai in the family and never had problems like this. This is not safe!!! this is not acceptable!!!! this is a new car purchased three months ago!!! I also asked him if this has something to do with the head unit which is riddled with problems. How did Subaru let a car like this off the line? I now fear using this car. I do not want to be in a fatal accident and I do not want to introduce fatal risks to my family. I am told that if the problem can not be reproduced at the dealer, there is nothing they can do. Translation: can't find the problem, can't fix the problem, I am stuck with a death trap.

6 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/07/2017

On street, from park with engine idling, car in drive, accelerator pedal dead at first, then high rpm 3000+ with pedal released. No control of engine rpm. Cel and cc illuminated on instrument panel. Put transmission in neutral. Killed ignition switch. Engine shut down. Restarted engine and rpm was normal. Very frightening! found dtc p2138 acc pedal sensor failure. Called Subaru support, no such record of failure. Called dealer from which car was purchased, answer was bring car in and will try to repair. This is a serious failure and danger. Please see this failure on google. Many people are reporting the same issue. I am apprehensive to put this car on the road especially with other people in it. An investigation should be pursued in these drive by wire vehicles as this car is. Please take this seriously. . Thank you.

7 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/27/2017

Car stalled out when I came to an abrupt stop on the highway during heavy traffic. It sputtered and then the car shut off. Had to be put in park and restart car.

8 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

When the brakes are applied and the car comes to a stop light or stop sign, the engine shuts off ('stalls when idling or slowing down'). The vehicle then must be put into 'park' mode in order to re-start. This occurs nearly everyday of the week, and has created many, many dangerous situations for us and the drivers around us. We took the vehicle to the dealership in may concerning this issue, and they stated that they had not heard of this problem, and that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. We took the vehicle in for service again this week, and the dealership mentioned that a technical service bulletin had been issued for this problem. The TSB was apparently issued in Jan 2014, but customers were not notified in spite of the fact that the defect poses dire saftey risks. We are bewildered given that this item is clearly a recall-worthy defect that places the vehicle owner, and the cars around them, in foreseeable and considerable danger. We are very concerned that other customers are also being told by the dealership and manufacturer that there is 'nothing wrong with their vehicle' in spite of the TSB issued in Jan '14. A cynical person might conclude that an effort is being made to obfuscate this safety defect until customer's warranties run out. Similarly, the manufacturers TSB language appears to obfuscate the defect with euphemistic language. To be clear --- the vehicle shuts off in the middle of the road when slowing down for a stop light or stop sign. It would appear that an effort is being made to avoid a recall. According to the TSB, Subaru modified production in October 2013 to account for and cure this safety issue. Again, customers ho were sold vehicles with the safety defect hav not been notified.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

I bought my Subaru Outback 2010 in early Apr. While I am fairly satisfied with the vehicle, I encountered 4 times totally that the engine shut off itself while I was driving. Normally it happens when I was slowing down and sometimes switching lanes. When that happens, I have to restart engine quickly to have full control of the vehicle. Since when engine is off, power break and steering system will not work. I had to use parking break to stop the car from rolling the first two times since I was nervous, and I didn't know the engine was off. 2 weeks ago, I brought my car to local dealer to check. Dealer technician just thought what I said doesn't make sense at all. They didn't think it could happen at all. (they still don't, not sure why they have so much confidence). Anyway, dealer scanned the computer code and nothing found. So, they returned car to me and told me nothing was wrong, it is safe to drive. I don't know how to reproduce the problem. I continued driving for 2 weeks, then it happened two more times. I have called dealer to schedule another appointment, but I doubt they can find anything either this time. They just don't think that could happen. I did some research on internet, and I did find a number of people complaining about the same problem. Now I feel maybe Subaru can believe our problem is real now? thanks.

12 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2003 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/17/2002

Car keeps shutting off in infrequent intervals. First at 375 miles and by 9000 miles it did it 9 times. The car has been at the dealer 6 times and just now Subaru is admitting to having other cars with this issue. All 2003 6 cylinder engines. I was told after the 4th time at the dealer that they cannot fix it, end of story. Then after filing a complaint with the attorney general office they are working on it again. They are now starting to replace stuff and want to put a black box in. This car shuts off only at a stand still so far but this is very dangerous. Subaru admits to having more cars like this and they only could fix half of them.
