I was going 55 mph on a straight flat surface when all of a sudden the rpm's shot up to around 4000 but the car was not accelerating. It was like it went into neutral. I pulled over to the side of the road and the car proceeded to die. Fortunately, it started right up and I drove home. I had a almost a full tank of gas. I had only driven it for 5 minutes as I was on my way home from work. I just had the oil/filter changed not even 2 months ago. I have 54,000 dealer serviced miles on the car. It was 86 degrees out. 2015 Subaru Outback premium 2. 5.

There is no way to disable the auto start/stop system. In florida the temp can get over 95 degrees. After 10-15 seconds of the car being off the car starts to heat up. My wife who has breathing problems starts having problems. I have ask the dealer to permanently disable this feature but they said no. You can do it each time you start the car but it is several screens deep on the information system. People who do not drive the car often (like my wife) would have trouble turning this feature off and could pass out sitting at a light. I recommend Subaru offer a way to disable this feature for people who have breathing issues. At a very minimum they need to move the disabling of this feature on every start to the main information screen where anyone can find it.

5 days after 120k mile dealer service (all work is done by Subaru dealer where we purchased) more dash lights than what sully sullenbeger had to content with. Occurred while sitting in traffic in 90 degree heat (with a 6 month old in the car). Drove it 35 miles to get it to the dealer. $2200 estimate to replace 2 head gaskets. Dealer is taking $350 off. Worth talking to Subaru corp about added compensation for a know defect? I see the same issue reported on line shortly after the 100k or 120k mile dealer check up.

The contact owns a 2010 Subaru Outback. While driving 25 mph, the engine stalled while approaching a stop light. The contact applied the brakes and the vehicle stopped. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and reverse out of traffic. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer (john howard Subaru, 1730 mileground rd, morgantown, wv 26505) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed. The dealer stated that the vehicle could be repaired under the warranty extension. The next day, the dealer called and stated that since the vehicle had a new title, it no longer could be repaired under the warranty extension. The manufacturer was notified at 1-800-782-2783 and did not assist. The failure mileage was unknown.

Open letter to Subaru and Subaru owners. I have a 2017 Subaru Outback. The reason I purchased the car was the high safety ratings. I came home yesterday, drove into the garage and shut the car off I thought. I apparently did not push the start and kill button hard enough. I am hard of hearing so did not notice the engine still running. This car does not have a remote start. My garage door automatically closes after a preset time. I happened out to the garage 3 hours latter to find the car engine still running. I can not the imagine the cars computer allowing the engine to continue to run for three hours without the key being in close proximity of the vehicle. This is a very dangerous situation. It was well over 100 degrees in the garage plus the carbon monoxide level was outrageous. If there is computer setting to stop this please let me know. Richard.

In 10 degree weather, my 2002 Subaru Outback wagon developed a fuel leak while being driven by my 17-year-old child. This is my second Subaru wagon and the the second to have cold weather fuel leaks. I tightened the clamp on the offending fuel line and I hope that is an adequate fix. But it is simply unacceptable that such a dangerous problem has not had a recall, and that it has been happening for 20 years. (my first Subaru with this problem was a 1991 legacy wagon. ) how many car fires have resulted from this problem? how many injuries or even fatalities? please make Subaru take responsibility for a poorly designed fuel line.

The car burst into flames at 2:30 in the morning in my driveway. We last drove the car home at 10:30 the night before, so the car had been sitting for four hours in cold weather (around 20 degrees). The dogs started barking and I woke up to find my car burning in the driveway. Firetruck came around 5 minutes later and put out fire. Fire was burning around entire vehicle. Fireman said that fire appeared to be internal to the car and not caused by human intervention. Police put the fire down as a "routine" engine fire. I am very concerned about the safety of older Subaru vehicles.

Traveling on icy road approx. 20mph or less in 2010 Outback 3. 6 ltd. Very accustomed to driving severe mountain winter conditions & 8th Subaru among family members. Seatbelt, shoulder restraint in place on driver. Oncoming driver in mid-size to large truck lost control at high speed, crossed center line and impacted Subaru head-on, offset to left side of Outback & 2010 Outback was totaled. Subaru airbags did not deploy. Impact into front left side, crumpled hood up to windshield, which shattered. His hood was inside Subaru engine compartment, remained under Subaru hood along with other parts of his vehicle after vehicles were towed. Subaru radiator was pushed in at approx 45 degree angle, left wheel bent inwards, left front bumper gone back to tire and much more damage. His airbags deployed and Subaru's did not. Subaru driver hit head, knees, shins on interior parts of Subaru: black eye, forehead hematoma, indentation & scraped, knees/shins bruised and scraped plus back/neck plus more scrapes/bruises and concussion. Thankful that his truck stopped up against driver side doorpost and didn't encroach into driver compartment but unbelievable that Subaru airbags didn't deploy. 5'6" & approx. 135 pounds. First of our Subarus to be in a crash and had no idea airbags wouldn't deploy.
When the outside temperature is below 32 degrees f, there is a strong odour of exhaust fumes or gas coming from the engine. When you turn the climate control to the cabin air recirculating position the smell decreases dramatically. This car must be driven with a window partially open for fresh air for safety. The odour is strong enough to cause nausea. There are numerous problems on the internet regarding this issue with Subaru. Subaru has never issued a recall to the best of by knowledge.

On manual air conditioning models with full maximum settings the system operates to full capacity, 39-41 degrees f. ; however, after 10 minutes of operation without maximum setting changed the output temperature is reduced to 50-53 degrees f. Dealer serviced, indicated that this is normal operation for this make/model. The internal cabin temperature after one hour of operation will only achieve 82 f. When outside temperature is 92-94 degree f. With maximum setting; as well as, internal air circulation.

In 20 degree weather (fahrenheit) an overwhelming gasoline odor filled the cabin of my 2001 Subaru legacy wagon (outback). This happened on three different trips around town yesterday. I have a 2. 5l engine, using 87 octane gasoline. The check engine light did not eliminate during these episodes. I lifted the engine compartment hood when this happened a third time and found the vapor smell was strongest near the intake manifold. There was no evidence of fuel leaking from any neoprene of steel lines. Obviously the odor was coming from the engine compartment through the heating system vents (the climate control fan was turned to high). The odor was so strong, it was overwhelming even when the vents were blowing recirculated air from the beginning of the trip. I believe a spark could have easily resulted in an explosion.

2010 Subaru Outback, 6 spd mt with 2,521 miles. Car has nearly stalled on numerous occasions when slowing or downshifting with clutch depressed and with ac on. More noticeable during hot weather (90+ degrees). Local dealer denied knowledge of this issue, only acknowledged cold engine stalling and they don't think that "fix" applies but will check to see if car could also be affected by that issue. Potential for being rear ended (and possibly pushed in to oncoming traffic) is high if car stalls in traffic due to loss of brake and steering control.
2001 Subaru Outback leaks fuel in cold weather. Read on the web about hundreds of owners with this complaint. Live in massachusetts and when the weather gets below about 25 degrees fuel smell fills the passenger cabin. Appears to come from under the engine manifold. Hope to not pass out from fuel vapors. Haven't had a fire yet. 2nd issue is head gasket leak which was a $1500 repair. Also appears to be a common issue with Subaru.
We own two Subaru Outbacks, a 2003 wagon & 2004 sedan, both purchased new from, and serviced by, the same dealer, rafferty Subaru, west chester, PA. When the defrost is turned on, the air recirculation is not available. When following vehicles in rain &/or snow when the defrost is needed, external exhaust fumes are sucked into the car. . . In slow or stopped traffic, this has made myself and other occupants feel ill. The only solution is to turn off the defrost, but this allows the windows to re-fog / -frost cutting visibility. I've inquired twice at my Subaru dealer and they confirmed that the recirculation cut-off is by design, and have contacted Subaru via the internet and received the same answer, with reference to pages in my owner's manual describing the circumstance and no resolution.
I want to express my concerns for Subaru quality and reliability. As a family we have owned several Subaru Outback vehicles. Unfortunately, our 2002 had bad pistons that had to be replaced after only 11,000 miles of ownership. The vehicle still did not run correctly after the engine overhaul so we sold it and regrettably purchased yet another new 2004 Subaru Outback wagon, which is now at our local dealer having pistons replaced in the engine. This is the second time a 4 cylinder Outback in our family has let us down. I now know what kind of quality they build into their vehicles. We are knowledgeable owners and we maintain our vehicles to a really high standard. We feel the NHTSA should investigate engine piston quality in 2002-2004 (4 cylinder) Outback wagons so that other owners do not find themselves in an unfortunate and precarious position. The engine is junk!.
There are several issues going on with my 1999 Subaru legacy Outback vehicle:
1) the check engine light goes on when the fuel gauge drops down to empty although the gas tank was just filled with gas. 2) the fuel gauge does not read correct. After the gas tank is full, the gauge fluctuates back and forth (sometimes the gauge reads near empty, sometimes the gauge reads 3/4 of the tank full) when operating the vehicle. 3) the car did not pass the California smog test. 4) the rpm gauge does not stay constant while driving at an even speed. Once the gauge hits between two to three thousand rpm, the gauge drops back to between one and two thousand rpm on and of when driving. 5) the gas tank does not maintain pressure even though the lid was screwed on tight. The lid was replaced with a new one but this problem still occurs. All these issues occur with the check engine light on. The dealer does not want to look at these issues without having me pay them to look at my car. These issues my car has been experiencing have been on and off since 2001 to present. The problems seem to get worse.
