36 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/19/2021

My wife and I, financed our brand new 2018 Subaru Outback premium from world Subaru, 688 shrewsbury Ave. , tinton falls, new jersey 07701, in June 2018. There are 3 main problems with the car, but I’ll only be addressing the most recent one. The main people in this situation is myself-james a lep jr, my wife-donna lep, Subaru, owner and general manager-joe wajda, service advisor-rudolph j degaetano, and fixed operation director-lou zuluaga. The 2018 Subaru was brought in for an oil change filter, etc. , on April 19, 2021 and I went right up to the service advisor rudolph j degaetano to tell him besides the oil change and filter to please take a look at this back tire wear, on the edges to about an inch in, its bald, about 3 inches then full thread all the way around the tire, rudolph said you need an alignment, so I told him to do it with the oil change and filter, so when they were done rudolph came back to me and I paid $165. 47, with this rudolph showed me the alignment paper and said this can’t be fixed, no mater what you do, the right front caster in red at 4. 3 cannot be fixed. And as you see on the original paper, on the right front caster in red, it can’t be fixed. But at the bottom in red it states, “ or more values are not within specification. Tire wear, handling and safety problems may result”. So its telling me the car is unsafe to drive and world Subaru cant fix it. I told rudolph thats unexceptable. Texted owner and general manager joe wojda who turned it over to fixed operation director lou zuluaga who in turn sent me a text, that it could be the body of the car. I explained to rudolph that Subaru had a big problem with the new ascents, and it either would cost Subaru to much to fix or they couldn’t fix it, and Subaru gave them all brand new ascents, but what about my car we bought brand new, they expect my wife to drive an unsafe vehicle???james a lep-732-221-8338 possamato@gmail. Com owner joe wajda-732-741-6200 lou and rudolph-same number.

37 Suspension problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/04/2021

I had just entered the golf course parking lot and had turned right to enter a parking slot. My speed was less than 5 mph. My car suddenly accelerated out of control, hit the concrete parking block and jumped over a 1 foot high wall which was 3 ft. Away from the block. The car ended up on a downslope and the rear wheel fortunately caught on a retaining wall. I was not injured and the airbags did not deploy. There was one witness to this terrifying event which occurred on February 4th at about 8:10 am in a parking spot that I have used at least 50 times in the past year.

38 Suspension problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/04/2021

This is a re-submission of complaint no 11398779. Photo files failed to upload. I had just entered the golf course parking lot and had turned right to enter a perpendicular parking slot. My speed was less than 5 mph. My car suddenly accelerated out of control, hit a concrete parking block (6 in high) and then over a 1 foot high wall which was 3 feet from the block. The car ended up on a down slope and the rear wheel fortunately caught on a retaining wall. I was not injured and the airbags did not deploy. There was one witness to this terrifying event which occurred on February 4, 2010 at about 8:10 am. It occurred in a part of the parking lot I have used at least 50 times in the past year. Several members have said they are afraid of parking in these spots and will never use them again. The component that failed is unknown to me, but I feel it is a definite safety risk. I was fully insured and the minor damage to the car was covered by my insurance. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

39 Suspension problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/02/2021

Driving in light snow or mixture of slushy snow the vehicle rear drifts left and right at speeds of 20 mph. Dangerous if the speed is exceeded. Car pass me all the time because they have not problems with the road at high speeds. I understand this is called ghost walking. The first time this happened I spun out.

40 Suspension problem of the 2021 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/22/2020

The car was built & sold new, with the rear suspension not aligned properly, and cannot be aligned to factory specifications. The car has been taken to 4 service stations, 3 Subaru dealer service repair shops, without being able to be aligned. After further investigation, I’ve found this to be a common problem for this vehicle type. I consider this safety related due to the unusual tire wear & risk of tire failure.

41 Suspension problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/23/2020

This 2010 Subaru Outback has only 69000 miles on it and it has several rusted rot spots on the sub frame, the axles and other front end components also have layers of rust suggesting the stability of those parts is also compromised. It is disappointing that this has happened to this vehicle with so few miles on the odometer.

42 Suspension problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/21/2020

Vehicle was bought in Nov. 2019. It has since had it's windshield replaced three times. The vehicle was on the freeway each time and the windshield was hit by a rock. Now I know rocks break glass, but I have never owned a vehicle with such a fragile windshield. I've owned many many cars and none have ever needed their windshield replaced even after being hit by a rock. Chipped yes, but never cracked all the way across like this vehicle. The vehicle also has a popping noise that comes from the left front, when turning left. The dealer can't figure out what the noise is.

43 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

Rear trailing arm snapped rendering vehicle unsafe to drive - the rear trailing arm snapped. It looks apparent it was slowly failing as some parts of the fracture are rusted out. The part number is 20250al02a. These parts were designed with very thin walls and may be the reason why it failed. I got lucky that the vehicle was just off the highway before I heard a clunking noise, braking at highway speeds would have caused the vehicle to flip over as the vehicle was not stable at all during the failure. Here are some photos of the failure. These photos were taken the day of the failure, February 8th, 2020.

44 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/09/2019

Bought vehicle used one owner no previous occurances, 8000 miles recorded. Gradually, a rumbling sound comes from front driver side when turning wheel on flat dirt driveway predominantely. Concurrent noise from dash. At 10,000 miles the car now makes rumbling noise at low speeds while traveling in straight line on good pavement (inaudible at high speeds) same front right location, dash was repaired replacing speaker grills and still makes rattling noise after fixing. Rumbling noise from drivers left front area checked by dealer and reported nothing looked wrong. Noise continues from dashboard. Rumbling noise from front driver side left wheel/dash area continues more often and seems to be inaudible at higher speeds - rumbling noise upon turning wheel and going straight on pavement as well as on flat graded dirt driveway. Subaru dealer service manager states that his field manager has concurred this has been reported elsewhere and cannot be fixed at this point in time. Taking back to dealership to have them check everything more thoroughally, if they cannot find problem, will take to dealership in another town to check, if they cannot find problem wiill either sue using the lemon law, or trade in for another make of vehicle.

45 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/28/2019

Bought car new, 7 miles on odometer. Took car into autonation Subaru - centennial colorado for noise complaint in driver-side front when going over a bump. Missing parts were noticed by shop. Shop said it was completely fixed, but we still had this noise, it was just quieter. Vehicle felt like alignment was off, as it shakes at highway speeds. Car makes tire squealing noise when turning in and out of parking spots at low speeds. Took car back to dealer shop many times for over 1 year. Shop always insisted no alignment was needed, front-end was in good report, tires were in good balance, and rotation was not needed. Shaking persists, 20k miles later driver side front tire is worn down to almost steel only on in-side of tire; all other tires have at least 6/32nds on tread (see attached photo: out-side of tire is thick treat like all other tires, in-side treat is gone). Original tires. No modifications to car. Serviced only at Subaru dealership. Vehicle shakes so bad now it feels like the car might fall apart. I do not feel comfortable having my pregnant wife drive our only vehicle. Help! not fair to buy a new car with missing parts and safety issues.

46 Suspension problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/12/2019

Passenger side rear strut completely collapsed/failed at 45000 miles. I replaced (not an easy job) with same kyb oe part.

47 Suspension problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/10/2019

My 2010 Subaru Outback k-frame and a-frame rotted out, affecting my steering, my breaking and my ability to control my steering. This caused a very dangerous safety issue. I notified Subaru and they informed me there were no recalls on the k-frame of this year's vehicle, although there had been for the rear sub-frame on this vehicle. Also, Subaru wanted $1400 to repair the sub-frame, so I went to a salvage yard and discovered that all but two of the sub-frames in the salvage yard were all rotted in the same areas. This leads me to believe that the sub-frame should be reported as a safety issue; as if the sub-frame fails at the a-frame, you will lose steering and braking ability. My father was the first and only other owner of this vehicle and it was undercoated by the manufacturer when it was bought--yet it still rotted out.

48 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/15/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2018 Subaru Outback. While driving various speeds, the vehicle suddenly jerked from side to side and became very unstable. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 2,500.

49 Suspension problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/01/2019

When driving over 40mph the car seems to jerk out of the blue it even seems like one side of the vehicle lifts or tilts as if it has hydraulics makes it hard to control continuously grip the steerg wheel in order to keep control is unbearable. There is something seriously wrong after readg online&on this website obvious somethings wrong. Why r u waiting for crashes& possible deaths to raise this issue? when driving on the highway at normal highway speeds all of a sudden you feel a quick pull as if a magnet just pulled your car and it also starts to lift when driving on the highway at normal speeds. Car lifts the front right side of suspension as if it's going to roll over and at the time it drops like it's going to fold under and you're going to crash. Like it has hydraulics but only on one side. This is very scary when your driving at normal highway speeds. This makes you slow down out of nowhere and causing others around you to suddenly avoid you. This is a nightmare. Subaru needs to acknowledge there is a problem. See all the other complaints and there is a lot more online by others that don't know how to go to this website and place a formal complaint because I did not even know about it. Came across by mistake. This car is meant for driving long distances and I am afraid to do so. When your afraid to drive your own car scarred of the quick jerk and the possible rolling of your car due to the "real" actions the car is performing while driving is and should be a vehicle safety concern prior to accidents and deaths taking place. Just because the "manufacturer" says it's in specs does't mean nothg wrong plus its the manuf sayg this, not an independent company. Boweing their airplane had hard time stating plane's fault. You can not put the manuf in charge of making the right choice when it comes to money.

50 Suspension problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/21/2019

While driving on slippery surfaces like ice and snow, the vehicle will begin swaying left and right uncontrollably. The sensation, also known as "ghost walking" could easily cause an accident if the driver can not control the swaying, and spinning out. Conditions of problem: driving during winter conditions, on snowy roads and highways. The vehicle is fine under dry/normal conditions. I believe the issue stems from the awd system.

51 Suspension problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/04/2019

Extreme shimmy / vibration in front end cause steering wheel to shimmy aggressively. This experience started about 2 months ago, the car has aprpoximately 150k miles. When driving car over 40 miles an hour the entire front end shakes like a very out of balance tire or the feeling of a warped rotor when braking. The shimmy can be seen in the steering wheel bouncing, and felt through the floor and seats. Tires and brakes have been inspected and there is no problem. Upon searching the internet I see this is common problem. Why is this no a recall? I am fearful of driving this vehicle.

52 Suspension problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/29/2018

I contacted Subaru's customer service number and told them that the subframe was broken and that they needed to fix the problem and they said I would have to pay out of pocket and that the recall was completed in August 2005 but the subframe is completely rusted out and broken please contact Subaru and get them to open another recall on these cars because the fix that they used didn't work.

54 Suspension problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/12/2018

I have had steering issues with this car since day one, the dealer told me I had to get use to it. Car pulled to the right and at higher speeds you feel like you were hydroplaning-no control then steering would come back. Brought the car back to dealer and they made adjusts to the alignment and doesn't pull to right as bad. But the feeling of hydroplaning still exists and the dealer can not duplicate problem . They tell me its within Subaru's specifications there is a real problem with this car since date of service 3-12-18.

56 Suspension problem of the 2007 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Vehicle was moving at less than normal speed, straight highway driving this morning on I-69, south of lansing, and on I-94, between I-69 and m131. Road had no snow, but patchy ice conditions. Back of vehicle was loaded with suitcases and telescope. Driver and passengers felt multiple, slippage in control of vehicle = unsafe. Other vehicles driving at greater speeds than ours were not experiencing issues. Confidence was lost in the ability to maintain traction. Driver feel was that two rear tires were alternating which tire had more authority in directional control. Felt as unnerving as prior driver experience with blowing out the rear tire on a goldwing motorcycle. Driver found this on internet, and it describes experience we had today: "summary of the ghostwalking symptoms: in winter driving conditions and especially on ice, some USA 2005-2009 Outbacks appear to have a chassis tuning issue where the rear suspension oscillates in such a way to cause rear-steer. This is not fishtailing due to using too much gas, lifting off the gas mid-corner, or hitting the brakes too abruptly. This can occur during straight line driving at moderate speeds. Road feel and handling confidence is totally lost when this occurs. The symptoms are not 100% reproducible and Subaru has not acknowledged that there is any problem. Subaru did revise the rear wheel alignment specifications for these cars in 2007 due to rear tire wear complaints. The change to alignment spec tightens the tolerance for rear toe. ".

57 Suspension problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/07/2017

Vehicle has vibrations increasing with speed. Most noticeable at 60mph and above and they have been getting worse. The car will also occasionally veer off to the right during braking. Took car to dealership for an inspection and was told that Subaru had issues with the suspension that year and that the suspension was upgraded in subsequent years. I was told that it would cost me $2000 if I wanted to upgrade the suspension, but that it wasn't a safety issue if I continued to drive the car.

58 Suspension problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/21/2017

Was driving on the highway on June 21, 2017 with a dishwasher in the trunk. It was raining and there was traffic, so my speed was about 40 mph. As I was driving, the car abruptly swerved from right to left, and I almost hit another car. This was my scariest driving experience .

64 Suspension problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/16/2016

My 2005 nearly killed me recently driving on straight highways that were a bit icy. Despite 4 studded tires, it would barely stay on the road above 35 mph even going totally straight. Cars of all other types were flying past at 60-75 mph, no problem. But my car would end up going sideways and inadvertently switching lanes and or almost going off the road at speeds starting at about 35-40mph. We had three adults in the car and the car filled with luggage, so it was fully loaded. I've read that this "ghost walking" phenomenon happens to 2005 to 2009 Subaru Outbacks that were produced in the USA. It mainly happens when the car is fully loaded, which due to a rear suspension flaw, causes toe-in on the rear suspension and then the rear end becomes totally unstable. I had to drive at 35 mph on highways back with my hazard lights on the avoid being rear ended by all the traffic going at normal highway speeds. Based on what I experienced, they're death traps that should be recalled. . Read more...

65 Suspension problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/14/2016

When driving on snow and ice with gear in the back or rear sear passengers the car can become very unstable. The backend will start changing directions on its own, this is referred to as ghost walking by several other people posting on the internet. From what I understand it is a design problem that allows the camber adjustment to change when weight is added to the rear of the car. It is a real problem and someone is going to get killed.

66 Suspension problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/25/2015

My 2005 Outback is very unsafe to drive under certain conditions. After extensive research online, I have discovered people use the term "ghost walking" to describe the issue. After driving over a bump or slick spot on the road, the driver momentarily loses control of the vehicle. The back end sways side to side and the car can jump several feet to the left or right. I have noticed this problem several times but it was drastically worse today. Driving on a straight, dry stretch of interstate, I drove over an icy patch under a bridge. My vehicle jumped to the left several feet and into the other lane. Had there been a car next to me, there most likely would have been an accident. I was traveling at approximately 40 mph as I had already experienced several incidents driving over large bumps. The issue seems to be worse when there is cargo in the back and on icy or bumpy roads. This seems to be a problem with numerous Outbacks model year 2005 through 2009. This is extremely unsafe behavior and it needs to be addressed. I do not intend to drive my vehicle much longer and I would hesitate to buy another Outback for fear of a similar issue.

I just noticed on this website that there was a recall in 2003 for inadequate rustproofing of that part; however, we never received notice of a recall. Can this be repaired or replaced now? there was no incident associated with this problem.
