On Saturday night between 9:30 to 9:45 pm while driving on 495, Tesla Model Y 2022, auto pilot was engaged at 70 miles per hour in three lane highway. My car was in middle lane with no vehicle in front in any of lanes. Suddenly without any warning, auto pilot was disengaged and car moved from 70 mph to 30 mph within few seconds shockingly. I was alert to pull accelerator in timely manner and avoided a possible rear-ended accident . It was scary moment with family onboard and luckily cars where behind enough to evade a possible disastrous accident. This must be fixed.
Sudden phantom braking happened while driving north on garden state parkway. I was in the 2 lane express northbound highway, and there was heavy traffic and flashing police lights on the separated 3 lane local northbound highway. I was using adaptive cruise control when Tesla suddenly braked, reducing speed 20-30 mph in a matter of seconds, despite no cars in front of me. I took back control and disengaged cruise control.
While using cruise control the vehicle brakes hard when no obstacle is any where near the car in front or sides. Some times hard enough to engage abs and you can feel the car on the edge of losing traction/control. This has happened multiple times on multiple trips.
I have been experiencing repeated episodes of phantom braking in which the vehicle will suddenly reduce speed, typically without any other vehicles in the vicinity. I routinely drive from twin falls to boise, which is a distance of about 130 miles, and it regularly happens at least twice. In some instances the speed has dropped suddenly by 15 - 20 mph, which is very frightening, but in other cases the speed only drops by 3 - 4 mph. In all instances there is no reason for the braking. However, the other day it happened with a semi-truck behind me, creating a potentially dangerous situation. This has happened with both cruise control and autopilot. This has been happening since I first purchased the vehicle, which was two months ago. I have 5,000 miles on the vehicle.
Car was at freeway speed (~70mph) and on cruise control, and out of nowhere the brakes were applied by themselves very abruptly. I was almost rear ended on the freeway as a result.
Phantom braking occurs in the Tesla Model Y when the vehicle’s tacc system is engaged. This is not auto drive, this is the systems traffic aware cruise control. Unexpected braking occurs decreasing “cruise speed” approximately 8-11 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. On a trip from the dallas TX area to the colorado springs area, this unexpected phantom braking occurred approximately 3 dozen times on open highway and in clear, sunny weather. This is a major safety concern as this brisk deceleration can cause the vehicle to be rear-ended by vehicles following the Tesla.
Automatic braking without obstructing vehicles or obstacles while using both the traffic aware cruise control and autosteer functions. Occurs multiple times per drive and has occurred on multiple drives. Occurs without warning and places following drivers at risk. Renders these features unusable.
The autopilot or full self driving malfunctions by suddenly braking for no apparent reason. Going from 70mph to 50mph on a busy highway can cause cars in the back to crash into my car. Along a two lane road the car suddenly started braking and veered right when a large 18 wheeler passed in the opposite lane. Causing cars behind to suddenly brake to avoid hitting my car. Another time car suddenly braked because there was a change in color where the road had been patched and there was a slight dip in the road. The problem has been confirmed by many other drivers and NHTSA is looking to the issue. I do not know what the Tesla company is doing about this problem. There was no warning before the sudden braking happened.
I have been experiencing phantom braking on my Tesla Model Y. It is a new vehicle, which I purchased at the end of September 2022. While driving with cruise control activated, the emergency braking will suddenly engage bringing the car to a sudden slowdown/ stop. This has happened on multiple occasions.
I have full self driving I paid $12,000 for and immediately wanted a return upon receiving the car it doesn't work as described. Tesla declined to refund me for the fsd software months ago. I have brought the car into service 3 times now and Tesla each time says there is nothing wrong with the car despite 5,000 gigabits of my own dashcam footage showing the car driving me into oncoming traffic, swerving towards concrete barriers, not seeing 5 people in a cross walk when turning at 25 mph, randomly slamming on the breaks and much more. The touchscreen will freeze leaving the driver with no turn signals, no speedometer etc. I feel like the car is possessed trying to kill me, I am a full time uber driver. Tesla service manager tells me with a straight face "just don't use it. " "just don't make any left turns". The front facing camera keeps rattling so I pulled the Teslacam footage and the camera is so blurry you can barely see anything so I bring it in for service and they say nothing is wrong. This is beyond dangerous this is a dereliction of duty that will result in lost lives, NHTSA you must intervene I have already alerted my governor and state attorney, they have verified they have received my testimony. I make a choice every day to get in a car I know is trying to kill me or not be able to feed my family. Tesla service manager prince harassed me by calling 15+ times while I was at dinner with my 9 month pregnant wife and threatening me by telling me he's tracking my car to publix and to my home. Wouldn't take the car out of service mode until I drove 45 minutes back to return his phone; I should have thrown it off a bridge! because he left his phone in my car with a 1 hour timer counting down. This is a cover-up please launch a real investigation Tesla is stealing billions elon makes enron look like a hill next to a mountain this just ain't right! last time I checked 3 service trips without a solution qualifies the car as a lemon and needs to have recalls.
I have a new 2022 Tesla Model Y and in less than 500 miles it has already "phantom emergency braked" on 5 separate occasions. The conditions was freeway driving, no traffic within 200-300 yards, daytime, and the geography was gentle rolling hills with little to no vegetation. On all occasions my speed was set at 75-80 mph. The events ranged from momentary autopilot brake application slowing the vehicle about 10 mph to very aggressive autopilot braking slowing the vehicle 30-40 mph. There are no other warning lamps, messages, or pre or post symptoms. Of course it goes without saying how dangerous this is especially if there were a vehicle following closely behind. Tesla is very aware of this problem. This particular vehicle, being brand new, has not had a service appointment to date but I am in the process of setting one up.
Driving on the interstate going 85 in autopilot with no other cars around and the car slammed on the brakes. Nothing in the road.
The contact owns a?2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds with the cruise control activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,500.
Model y slamming on break for no particular reason when hazardous lights are on. Luckily no car was behind me.
I have experienced "phantom braking" with this vehicle from the time I received it in Feb '22. There have been over 20 incidents. I do not feel safe using the cruise control in traffic or when any car is following me. It could very easily cause an accident. When cruise control is on, it will randomly apply emergency braking. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of vehicle following me is at risk because the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly applies emergency braking. I have not tried to address the issue with Tesla. There are never any warnings that this may happen. This is very unsafe and with the number of vehicles with this known issue, I hope the NHTSA applies pressure to Tesla to fix the problem ASAP. I do not feel safe using the cruise control and likewise it is not a safe situation for others on the road to have these vehicles driving with this issue.
The contact owns a Tesla 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving at 65 mph in the rain, the vehicle experienced phantom braking and stopped suddenly. The vehicle then veered to the right independently. The brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle spun out and crashed into a wall on the side of the road. The air bags deployed. The contact sustained bruises and significant pain to the left leg. The contact also sustained soreness of her fingers, arms and shoulders. The contact did not seek medical assistance. The contact’s sister transported her to her residence. The contact was unsure whether a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The vehicle was then towed to a collision center. The contact was not using autopilot mode at the time the failure occurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that she would need to repair the vehicle at her own expense. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving approximately 70-80 mph with adaptive cruise control activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking while there were no vehicles or objects nearby. The contact stated that he depressed the accelerator pedal and was able to continue driving; however, the failure had been reoccurring more frequently. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 400.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 - 80 mph with the adaptive cruise control engaged, the forward collision avoidance; automatic emergency braking activated with no traffic within a ¼ mile. There was no warning light illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 3,500.
Alert was coming randomly while driving the car about several safety systems being disabled automatically without any audible notifications. Alert clears up after the car is locked for several minutes. Below is the alert message. . Automatic emergency braking disabled automatic vehicle hold disabled traction control disabled stability control disabled cruise control disabled this makes the car suddenly unsafe to drive if you are not paying attention to the screen. I have been on the road driving car at 60-70mph several times when this happened. This can turn in to an accident. I provided the information and created a service appointment at Tesla which took a month before they can get me a scheduled appointment. Tesla fixed the issue with below note after further review. "a loose connection in the area of the steering gear was causing severe communication problems between the stability controller and the autopilot computer. " resolution date: 11/18/2022 report date: 9/5/2022.
Travelling on open highway (no other cars around) - attempted to use our autopilot/cruise control on the new Tesla for the first time. We engaged the system and it maintained the speed limit for a minute or two and then for no reason applied the brakes rapidly reducing speed. Thankfully no cars were behind us - but the force was so strong it did cause back/neck strain. We thought maybe we had done something wrong - tried again two more times - always on open road - no other cars around - and always the same action. We have concluded we cannot use this feature at all - it does not feel ready or safe.
My car came with a factory hitch adapter. I was hauling a flat bed trailer with a load of about 10 20' 2x4s on it home for my foundation. At approximately 65 miles per hour, out of no where, with no other cars around, on a sunny day, and on a straight section of 2 lane road, the car suddenly applied the brakes hard, to the point that I was afraid of the load on the trailer shifting and hitting the car even though it was tied on well. This is just the worst example of this annoying behavior that I can't seem to disable on my new Model Y. It sort of like riding a horse with a mind of it's own, and so you're never sure when this mare will spook and come to a stop and throw you off. You might say that there was no damage done, but that's like saying that if someone tried to break in your front door and failed, then you're ok. Of course you're not because it leaves emotional damage when this occurs. I'm scared to drive the car because of it.
When using the autopilot adapative cruise control feature, the car will regularly think there is a reason to slow down suddenly (the "phantom braking" common complaint). I only use the car on trips, and this happens frequently. While on route 152, this happened multiple times on a stretch of road that is long and flat. There were no other cars around (and fortunately, none behind me). This probably happened 5-6 times during a 50 mile drive. More recently, it happened on hwy 99 at least twice in about 30 miles of driving. There were more cars behind me so it felt very unsafe. There was no reason to brake however. It has almost gotten to the point where I do not feel comfortable using cruise control because it will suddenly start braking for no reason. I almost have to have more vigilance when cruise control (autopilot) is on than when it is off because the car might unexpectedly start braking. If Tesla cannot get this fixed, then they should probably stop offering this is as a feature in their cars.
We are on a cross country trip on open highway and it randomly applies the breaks hard at times for no apparent reason.
I took delivery of a Tesla y in February 2022. About a half dozen times since, I've been driving on the highway using cruise control/auto pilot and the car will randomly slam on it's brakes, so hard that loose objects in the car are flying to the front. There was no warning prior or any of these incidents. Thankfully I have not had cars directly behind me when this occurred. . . If there had been someone behind me they would have absolutely hit me. I have not yet contacted Tesla.
We have owned the car approximately 2 weeks and have had 3 episodes of inappropriate activation of emergency braking. The first two were minor slowing of the vehicle when traveling on interstate highway when the system was activated by dips in the road. The third involved a parked pickup truck on the shoulder of the outside curve of a road - resulting in aggressive braking of our vehicle. Frightening. Thankfully there was no closely trailing vehicle. We have inactivated the system, notified Tesla, and scheduled a service appointment.
Hello, my name is shamil gassanov and I had 2022 Tesla Model Y performance. I had an accident on July 25, 2022. Car just took control itself, we hit the tree. It was in residential area, it happened so fast, that I could not to react to prevent it. After we hit the tree, car catch the fire, it was a nightmare for me, I had my best friend with me at the time of accident on the front passenger seat. Both of us were unconscious, by the time I got awake, car was in flames, my friend was still unconscious but than he got awake after I tried with the local neighbor to pull him out from the car. Unfortunately my friend passed away after accident in 5 hours. I had an autosteer assistance on my car subscription. Plus my car had a problem with the side cameras, time to time it was giving me errors - door pillar error message. Cops were trying to get information from the car, but according to Tesla representative my car was out of network from June 30, 2022. And I never got any notifications that my car is out of network.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 80 mph on the highway, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving to his destination. The contact experienced the failure a second time. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer and was diagnosed with needing to clean the side sensors that was thought to have caused the failure. The dealer cleaned the sensors. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 13,000.
While driving down the highway, the Tesla slammed on the brakes automatically, with significant force, for no reason.
Braking system applied brakes while on the interstate going 75+ mph no reason to brake, happens quickly on most instances, I hurry to hit the accelorator to speed back up to speed as to not cause any incidents. First several times it is very uncomfortable to experience, causing concern to be easily hit from the rear in areas with more traffic. The issue is not reproduced as it seems to happen when the car "thinks" it has a reason to brake, different enviromental changes such as cars, in the other lane, or shadows seem to have an affect as well. No inspections have been completed at this time. No warnings seem to be triggered when this takes place, just rapid unexpected deacceleration.
Repeated random breaking when in cruise control or auto steer. It is available for inspection upon request. Car abruptly stopped on busy road at 60 miles per hour more than once. Slows on expressway repeatedly, which can potentially cause loss of control or being hit from behind. Vehicle has not been inspected for this issue. There have been no warnings of the problem prior to the failure. This problem has happened the entire time I’ve owned the car, especially, but not only, when driving on freeways.
I was traveling on the highway in indiana between bloomington and indianapolis. I started to experience the car braking for no apparent reason. As I continued on my trip and reached a top speed of 75 mph, the car suddenly and without warning slammed on the brakes! it took me a minute to react and regain control of the car. I absolutely would have been rear-ended if anyone had been nearby or possibly caused a chain reaction accident. I am extremely lucky and now very remiss about purchasing this car. I luckily had a passenger who looked up what was happening. We turned off the emergency braking for the remainder of the trip but it is not something you can turn off permanently. You have to turn it off every single time you start a new trip. I wanted this incident reported so Tesla is forced to deal with this issue immediately.
The car was delivered to me today. It has 15 miles on the odometer. The brakes do not work. I almost crashed into a home. Extreme safety concern. The next device appointment is July 20th. I will wait for them to diagnose the issue. Very concern this auto manufacturer is delivering faulty brand new products to consumers.
On Saturday, 25 June, while driving our 2022 Tesla Model Y north on highway 395 between lone pine and bishop, California, and while cruise control (but not lane assist) was active, I experienced three instances of so-called phantom braking. More precisely, on three occasions within a 10 to 20 minute window, the car automatically braked sharply despite there being no vehicle or other obstacle ahead of me. Each time, the braking was sudden, forceful, and without justification. Had a car been following closely behind me, I could well have been involved in a collision. I stress that my foot was not on the brake pedal when the phantom braking took place. After the 3rd episode, I turned cruise control off and drove another couple of hours (to mammoth lakes) without incident. The following day, my wife and I drove the Tesla to our home in the bay area. We did not activate cruise control at any point during this approximately 6 hour drive, and experienced no additional incidents. Understandably, we are reluctant to re-attempt the use of cruise control any time soon. I have owned this Tesla Model Y since January of 2022, and these were the first instances of phantom braking.
I received my 2022 Tesla Model Y a few weeks ago and quickly began to notice intermittent sudden breaking when utilizing the "auto-pilot" feature. Because of these incidents I rarely utilize this feature any more. Today during an out of town trip, on two occasions when utilizing cruise control the car suddenly applied its breaks. During both occasions there were no other vehicles within 100 yards and the freeway (I-17 in arizona) opposite direction lanes were separated by hills/rocks and not in direct eyesight.
The car system been keep crash cause it screen frozen and while crash it will no speed display no ac no warning no back up camera and important after lifting gas pedal the car will not reduce speed as before and I almost crash the car. Been report the problem to Tesla since early July and the keep cancel my appointment said it need wait for updates but can’t provide the date. I requested get the loaner while they can’t solve the problem but they denied and cancel my service appointment . It dangerous to drive and very unpredictable when the system crash while driving. While driving expect the car will reduce speed but it not and no speed will display will cause over speed limit. The the pre collision system will not work at all and the system crash every few minutes and screen will shut off it self. While system crash will need triple amount of force the press on brake pedal to stop the car when it on high speed it impossible to respond to stop at short distance.
