Toyota 4Runner owners have reported 44 problems related to other fuel system (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota 4Runner based on all problems reported for the 4Runner.
No accident - items need to be investigated for safety defects on Toyota's. 1> front brake calipers (constant freezing of the front brake calipers). 2> dash cover (excessive cracking on the dash covers especially areas that contain airbags). 3> fuel pump connection (on top of fuel tank, connection to fuel pump appears to create a short, which in turn causes vehicle to stall also could cause a fire). 4> excessive frame rust (frame has excessive rust outside and inside which is causing frame to fail. This is a manufacturing issue). These are ongoing issues with Toyota that have been reported and nothing is being done about it. Multiple 4runners are having big time excessive frame rust, which are causing the frame coming apart during highway driving. These photo's show the rust on the outside and inside, all metal is having rust issues. Paint has been applied to cover said rust but it still reappears with-in a few months. Best way to contact me is via e-mail.

When driving at 70 mph, the vehicle vibrates on the highway. I have taken the vehicle constantly to the dealership for over two years complaining about this problem and they always told me that nothing was wrong. Today (5/10/14), the mechanic at the dealership put the truck on a rack and ran the car at 45 mph and there was visible vibration coming from the drive shaft and a loud noise that I could never hear from within the vehicle. All this time, I have been driving a vehicle that I was unaware could have snapped apart. The sound cannot be heard in the cabin, so I could not even report that as a problem until today. I purchased three sets of new tires, had shocks and struts replaced, and brake pads to no avail. Finally, after searching the web yesterday, I realized that this is a common problem with other vehicles of the same make and model. I'm not sure if this problem has caused injury to others, but there should be a recall. This could cause a potentially fatal accident if that shaft breaks. I read that for similar models (Toyota and Lexus), the manufacturer replaced the parts under warranty, but nothing for the 4runner. The dealership is charging over $700 for this repair.

When my wife stepped on the gas to pull into a parking spot, the 4runner just lurched forward into a fence. Luckily no one was in front of the 4runner. The bumper and fence was damaged. She is now very scared to drive the 4runner.

While the vehicle was sitting and idling the engine light came on along with vse light and experienced rough idling and erratic throttle response. When my wife tried to put in reverse and back out no throttle was produced to move vehicle. She turned car off and restarted engine light remained on along with vse light. She was able to make it home with rough idling and extremely erratic throttle response. This happened one other time within a five day window until we were able to get to the dealership for service appointment. Dealership contends throttle body is bad at 39,000 miles due to the three problems codes pulled from vehicle. Although scheduled preventative maintenance was performed @ 30,000 miles with throttle body cleaning this part still failed. The erratic throttle response from this part is very dangerous for anyone that experiences this while driving.

My 2003 Toyota had emissions issues in that all four oxygen sensors would fail quickly. It took me two years and lots of money later to determine that the cause of this is because transmission fluid is wicking its way through the transmission solenoid harness all the way to the ecu and once there because of the way the ecu is mounted gets into all of the other wiring harnesses of just about every other sensor. I went to Toyota and the first technician never heard that happening before but another overheard our conversation and said "I bet you have a 4runner" so yeah its happened to others. They wanted nearly $4500 to fix the issue. New engine wiring harness $1500-$2000 and another $1000 for the labor and the rest of the estimate is for other parts not specified. Their solution is to cut the wire below the transmission wiring harness connector then splice and solder but I would have to replace nearly all the critical wiring in that car. I cant give an exact date on when it started going wrong but I can look at the service history on the Toyota owner's website and give you this timeline. 0-89,997 - no, issues with emissions or electrical systems. 89,997mi - 90k service done - transmission fluid change w/flush done at dealer. 98,152mi - car reporting lean codes, dealer replaces maf sensor. 100,117 - car reporting lean codes, dealer replaces O2 sensor and a/f sensor bank 2 position 1 & 2 105,312 - car reporting lean codes, dealer replaces bank 1 position 1 a/f sensor and maf sensor again. Total cost $798. 76. There are more but I have character limits. I will say this though that the problem should have been obvious because you can clearly see the fluid when you unplug the O2 sensor from the harness but Toyota was content charging me $500-$700 every 10k miles without actually fixing it. Car still remained functional but ruined fuel economy.
Sudden acceleration , where the brakes have to be applied to stop vehicle. This has happened numerous times since vehicle was purchased new in 2004.

2000 sport edition 4 runner, all working components and frame are badly rusted. Nothing can be worked on without breakage of parts and bolts. There has been a recall on tacomas and tundras from the east coast where salt is used on the roads. Customers have been given replacement frames or their vehicles have been purchased back from Toyota. Our car is from vermont and new york where I am sure they used road salt and this is why the untreated frames of these vehicles corroded so badly like our 4 runner. I believe Toyota should give the same offer for the 2000 4 runner. My son worked for two years and at 18 years old purchased this vehicle for $9000. 00. We were crushed when we realized the extent of rust damage on the underside of this vehicle. Nothing can be repaired without huge expense, and every thing on the underside of this car needs replaced. Where is Toyota's customer care and satisfaction now?.

Erratic throttle response and erratic/unpredictable/difficult to predict brake application .
I have purchased it. I have been told that there are not any recalls or tbs's on the 4runner for that problem. Today(2/24/10) I find online a tbs for the problem that I have. I called a dealer and he said that since I have over 80k on the truck, that I would have to pay for it. This is not fair and I should not have to pay for it. Your people have told me several times that there was nothing that could be done about the smell. From what I have read online there are several others in the same situation that I am in. TSB no. Eg00303.
