1 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/29/2019

I'm writing you today in the hopes that you can investigate and create a recall for Toyota's x-reas suspension system. I purchased a brand new 2015 limited 4runner four years ago. On November 29th, 2019 I had my 4runner serviced at a Toyota service center for a 40,000 mile check up. After the check up I was told that both front struts needed to be replaced and due to the design (both front struts being connected to both rear shocks) the entire x-reas suspension system needed to be replaced. (total cost before realignment and tax = $2,468. 00. ) x-reas comes standard on the limited Toyota 4runner and is a hydraulic system that cannot be serviced. The x-reas system on my 4runner started leaking with only 38,977 miles of city and freeway driving with absolutely no off roading. I feel that this is incredibly premature and a defective design for a suspension that is supposedly built to withstand rugged off roading. After doing some research online, I have found that I am not the only one that has been faced with x-reas suspension system problems. 2 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 2013 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/19/2018

I went into my Toyota dealer for a state inspection. Service writer comes out and tells me the vehicle failed due to a broken right rear leaf. At a cost of 1026. 18 to replace 1 leaf . I say well isn't that going to change my ride height having only 1 replaced . She says yes but I only quoted for the broken 1 . That being said I still have to pay for the inspection . The cashier says would you like to talk to the shop manager and was quite adamant about it . So I started thinking I'm not the only 1 with this issue. So they get the shop manager he says you got a minute. And leaves comes back after about 20 minutes and says Toyota will pay for the leaf. But you have to pay the labor . Once again I say hows this going to affect my ride height and what effect is it going to have on my alignment . He try' to tell me if it was a front coil it would sorry . If your ride height is off front or rear its going to have a effect on the vehicles camber. That being said the other leaf isn't going to last very long with half the problem corrected. Plus are they going to put the same inferior part in again. I feel Toyota knows about this problem and is snowballing people . Just like when they had their frame issue. Also the vehicle only has 55821 miles on it.

3 Rear Suspension Coil Springs problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/05/2007

I have been sent many notices from Toyota indicating a recall on my 1997 Toyota 4 runner. The dealer refused to fix the recall since it involved removing aftermarket equipment in the area of the defect. I wrote Toyota and told them the circumstances and they replied by phone that I would have to remove the equipment first. I continue to get these recall notices and am finally complaining to the NHTSA to assist in convincing Toyota that it is their liability, not mine. The aftermarket equipment in question is just two small airbags inserted in the rear springs to assist in leveling the truck when carrying heavy loads. The airbags will most probably not have to be removed to affect the repair, but the dealers won't touch the truck, since it adds time and they will lose money on the flat rate paid by Toyota. If the truck suspension fails, as it might at this late stage, the liability will be solely on Toyota as I have complied with their requests to the letter, which states simply to bring the truck in for the retrofit/installation of new parts, and no where in the recall letter is there any language stating that a customer will be refused if additional hours of labor will be involved. If Toyota is worried about liability issues that might arise from the removal and replacement of the airbags, I would think that this would pale in comparison to what they would have to pay if the rear suspension failed while driving this truck at highway speeds. I have written them letters, spoken to them on the phone and they continue to send me letters the recall and noting that the truck is unsafe. Again, Toyota should affect this repair no matter what additions have been put in place in the area of the rear suspension. If anything, the addition of the airbags have made this truck more stable and safer than it was when it was delivered. Toyota needs to contact me with the name of a dealer who will institute the recall repairs with the truck in the current condition.
