1 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2017 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/20/2020

A deer ran out in front of me, driving 50 mph. Passenger side hit, all 8 airbags deployed. Passenger side airbag under steering wheel, cut up my legs horribly, very swollen, refused hospital due to covid 19 fear. The airbags cut up my left arm and my daughter's right arm(she was passenger). Very happy that we were safe, but the serious cuts on my body seemed quite severe for the hit which was on passenger side and by a deer.

2 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2013 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

Takata recall all of the side air bags deployed while driving on a flat surface around 20 mph. According to computer report it stated the 4runnder was in a rollover when it was not. Please see attached report. There is no damage to the outside of the vehicle and was not at any inclines. Toyota stated the 2013 4runner is not under the air bag recall. It should be!!! I have had the 4runner for under a year and it now is just sitting at the dealership. Toyota is dragging their feet stating that it can take up to 30 days or more for their department to review the computers report and make a decision to recall/replace/repair their bad faulty air bags. This is unaccepetable. The 4runner is needed for a daily driver. This needs to be handled quicker and there should be no question this 4runners air bags should be under the recall.

5 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/23/2016

Takata recall I received a recall in the mail this past week to no longer drive with a passenger in the front until a remedy becomes available. When I called the dealership to find out when I could replace my passenger side airbag they said it could be months from now before the part is available. I said that is not feasible for me to not take a passenger in my SUV for months! I was told I could possibly rent a car for 4 days at a time only if I had a very valid reason to rent it. Also I would need to come back every 4 days with another valid reason to continue to obtain a rental vehicle. This is absolutely unacceptable and unreasonable! especially since Toyota does not have an eta of when the replacement part will become available.

6 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2011 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/15/2016

Takata recall: on July 15, 2016 we received a letter from Toyota regarding the recall or our passenger side airbag. It is now 8 months later and their recall website still says there is no remedy for this. Meanwhile, I've seen news reports that takata pleaded guilty for this fraud and there were Toyota executives that knew about these faulty airbags at the time the deal was made. We have waited long enough for this fix. Please notify us as soon as this remedy if available for our vehicle!.

7 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

Takata recall. On July 11, 2016 we received a recall letter from Toyota regarding the need to replace the passenger side airbag. Our local Toyota dealer informed us they do not have any replacement parts a this time and do not know when they will be available. We contact Toyota corporate and they also stated they did not have any parts available and did not have an estimated time when parts will be available. The recall letter we received stated that we should not drive the vehicle or at least if we drive it there should not be anyone in the front passenger seat. Leaving the vehicle non-operational is not an option, nor is it reasonable to leave the front passenger seat empty. Toyota states that supplying us with a loaner vehicle is not an option unless we want to pay for it on our own. With no time frame for when parts might be available for repairs we are left with driving the vehicle with an known safety issue and no reasonable expectation of completing the repairs.

8 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2011 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/23/2016

Takata recall. Notified in may of the problem with the passenger side airbag. Have made several calls to the dealer legacy Toyota, in tallahassee, florida on the status of receiving the replacement part. They cannot give a date on when the part will be received. I am in zone a which is supposed to have a high priority due to high temperatures and humidity. Significant propellant degradation may occur is projected at between 6-9 years. Your website says millions have been replaced so I wonder why I cannot get a replacement? very frustrated because the vehicle cannot be operated.

10 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/12/2014

I was first one waiting at the light, traveling eastbound on butler/airport rd. When the light turned green, I proceeded through the intersection. When I was about halfway to three-quarters through the intersection, I noticed a Mini cooper approaching rapidly, heading northbound on shute rd. I knew she was going to hit me, so I attempted to swerve left to avoid a high impact collision. I didn¿t hear her brakes until the point of impact, she t-boned my 4runner hitting me in the rear passenger side near the wheel well. My 4runner than tipped and rolled upside down. I waited until the 4runner stopped moving, unbuckled the seat belt and flipped over to the ground (now the roof of the vehicle). I looked at the window and attempted to pull/push the side curtain airbag out of the way, I even tried kicking it a few times, but it was still inflated and wouldn¿t budge. I remembered that I kept a pocketknife in the center console. I looked for it, and saw it on the ground. I got the nail file section open, but that didn¿t do anything to the airbag. I then heard someone outside the vehicle shout ¿help is on the way, they¿ll get you out. I asked her if she could help me cut the airbag, and handed her the knife through the gap between the airbag and the car frame. She tried to cut the cord that connected the airbag to the car but that didn¿t work, so I told her just to slit the bag itself. She was able to do that, and helped me get out of the vehicle. I took pictures of the vehicle overturned a few minutes later, and the passenger side airbag was still inflated. I can provide this picture upon request. The vehicle was totaled, and is now property of state farm, claim #37492d121. My concern is that if there was a vehicle fire and I did not have a pocket knife, I would not have been able to exit the vehicle.

11 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/01/2014

I own a 2005 4runner sport 4. 7l. I bought it brand new from gene reed Toyota in charleston, SC. This is not my daily driver and stays in the garage most of the times. It only has 59k on it. This past weekend I was dusting it off getting ready for a Sunday drive and noticed a crack starting at the gauges and following the curve on the dash all the way over to the top of the radio. I just drove it a week ago and that was not there. I have never used any chemicals on my dash, only a damp cloth. At first glance I thought it was a factory seam. I pulled it out of the garage and into the sunlight where I could see it better and sure enough you could see the yellow foam inside the crack. I went to google the problem and could not believe my eyes at all the same, exact problems that were going on. There are thousands of complaints with the 4runner's dash cracking for no apparent reason. I am very disappointed in Toyota with the quality of materials that they used to make this dash pad. My vehicle is in mint condition and has been garage kept it's entire life. This seems to be happening mostly to the 2003-2005 4runner's all over the country. I have read that other owner's have contacted their dealership and Toyota motor sales USA, inc. About the problem and they have all refused to do anything about it. This needs to be resolved by Toyota because I have noticed the crack is getting bigger when it expands in the heat of the sun. The dash pad goes directly over the passenger side airbag and if the cracking continues it could make the airbag malfunction and deploy unexpectedly. I have read other 4runner owner's are very worried that the cracking dash will effect the airbag too. Toyota could at least pay half for the part and let a Toyota tech install it.

12 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota 4 runner. While driving approximately 35 mph, the driver and passenger side curtain air bags suddenly deployed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacuter was contacted and informed the contact an inspector would inspect the vehicle for the failure. The inspector stated the failure could have been caused by drink spillage in the cup holder because the air bag module was located under the cup holder. The inspector could not guarantee that was the cause of the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

13 Side/window Air Bag problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Have an 2003 Toyota 4 runner, that has always been parked in my garage. It only has 40,000 miles on it & is mint condition except for one major problem, the dash. Although it does not sit outside in the sun, only in my garage, there are cracks all along the dash. Most predominantly there a diagonal crack across the passenger side airbag, as well as along all the edges of where the dash meets a curve (I. E. Right above the speedometer) it is extremely unfortunate that this seems to be a major problem across the dashboard with other 4runner's and sienna's, and it is also very unfortunate that due to airbag restrictions, I can't even pay someone to fix it. My concern is the diagonal crack across the passenger front airbag.
