37 Suspension problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/07/2023

I have had this vehicle since 12/1997 and it had always been garaged. The body is in very good condition. I live in northern wisconsin and road salt is prevalent during the harsh winters. At the first part od April I was driving on hwy, 47 toward minocqua and suddenly the steering felt vague. I moved the steering wheel slighlty and the vehicle went out of control, I managed to avoid oncoming traffic and pulled to the side of the road. I was still near home and drove very slowly to get home. Upon examining the cundercarriage at a local mechanic, we found that the frame was rusted and had broken where the rear trailing arm is attached, leaving the rear axle loose. I ended up giving the car to the mechanic. After driving it for 26 years it was a very sad moment since ran great and was my daily driver. I called Toyota and they told my vehicle was not included in the recall for.

38 Suspension problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/28/2023

We recently looked at this vehicle at Toyota of ann arbor car lot. After taking the vehicle to a private professional certified car inspector we were told that that the passenger side frame had a catastrophic crack that ran 7' from front to back and over the forward facing rear leaf spring shackle support making the vehicle unsafe for any driving. They showed us the frame damage and showed us how wire mesh and foam spray had been used in an attempt to hide it. We were scared to drive it back to the dealer (we drove very slow). We informed them of the damage and they were very rude and asked us to leave. My only goal here is to insure that this vehicle is not put on the road were it could result in death or injury.

39 Suspension problem of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/13/2023

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 mph, the shock absorber and springs on the suspension were making abnormal sounds while the vehicle was rolling over a dip or bump in the roadway. The contact looked underneath the vehicle and became aware that the springs and shocks showed premature wear and corrosion. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact researched online and related the failure to technical service bulletin t-sb-0094-20 (front suspension). The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

40 Suspension problem of the 2023 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/28/2023

Vehicle begins to shake when speed reaches 60 to 70 mph (issue has been happening since the vehicle left the lot). Shaking can be felt in the steering wheel, gas/brake pedals and front seats. Vehicle has been taken to a Toyota dealership three different times and after three realignments and tire rebalancing, the issue still persists. Several 4runner owner forums are experiencing the same issue in this make, model and year; and suspect the issue might be stemming from a malfunctioning or broken needle bearing.

44 Suspension problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/25/2022

The contact owns a 2008 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that upon taking the vehicle for the state inspection, he was informed that the vehicle could not be inspected due to severe subframe corrosion. The contact stated that her son, an independent mechanic, later determined that the entire subframe and suspension of the vehicle were severely corroded. The contact stated that the vehicle was undrivable. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 83,600.

45 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/20/2022

The frame is damaged from excessive corrosion. The rear cross member that supports the trailer hitch and rear bumper is almost non-existent, which could result in the loss of the trailer being towed, and it will reduce the truck's rear impact resistance. The front right lower control arm has a 2'" x 3/8" lateral hole from corrosion, which could result in a catastrophic failure of the right front suspension system. The longitudinal frame members are compromised by corrosion which has penetrated through the steel in various locations. The front cross-frame member that supports the radiator is severely corroded. The frame to body mounts are showing signs of excessive corrosion which could result in the separation of the the body from the frame in an accident.

46 Suspension problem of the 2022 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/15/2022

Yes vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Steering wheel/steering column/wheels tires/suspension/differential/drive shaft/: steering wheel shimmies, shakes, vibrates, wobbles and usually occurs at 55-68 mph typically closer to the 62-64 mph range and "pulls"/steers very hard to the right during this time. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This could possibly cause me or another driver to lose control of the vehicle and cause an accident that might hurt me or someone else. The vehicle has been inspected by the Toyota dealership more than 6 times in 6 months/6k miles. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer. Wheels and tires have been balanced and road force balanced several times. Alignment has been performed several times to varying degrees of castering and adjusting wheels all within manufactures specs. Correct tire pressure is used. Wheels and tires were swapped with another set of wheels and tires from the same year, make, model, and tread depth and it did not fix the issue. No one can fix the shake and wobble in the steering wheel. I purchased this certified pre-owned vehicle with 11k miles on it and now has just over 20k miles. This has been a problem since approx. 12. 5k miles. I took it to the dealership service dept for the first time around 14k miles. The dealership service department has opened 2 tech cases on this and I am set to meet with a Toyota field rep this week. My hope is that they can determine what defect is causing this to happen. There are numerous reports of this happening (just google "Toyota 4 runner shimmy in the steering wheel") and no one can fix it. Is it going to take someone getting hurt or dying for this issue to be resolved?.

47 Suspension problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/09/2022

The contact's wife owns a 1999 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at a slow speed, the back end of the vehicle began to wobble. The contact stated that his daughter pulled the vehicle into a parking lot and had the vehicle towed to the contact's home. The vehicle was inspected and severe corrosion was discovered on the driver's side rear lower control arm mount. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed him that there are no recalls on the vehicle. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and the contact was given the same information as the dealer. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 240,000.

48 Suspension problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/03/2022

I have a 2006 Toyota 4runner. I also have a 2005 GMC sierra, but this 4runner's frame is absolutely toast, while the GMC is completely fine. Toyota issued recalls on the tacoma, tundra, and the sequoia, so why not the 4runner? my car started swaying and violently shaking on the highway. I pulled over and looked underneath, only to see the rear section of the frame had completely disconnected. This could have caused a major accident or even death if I did not catch it soon enough. This is a massive safety issue, and if people do not know what to look for with these, Toyota will be seeing a lot of wrongful death lawsuits.

49 Suspension problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/01/2022

My frame has rotted through, causing the rear bump stops to fall off, putting excessive wear on both frame and suspension components. In parts of the frame, it has rotted all the way around and caused a loss in structural integrity. Worst of all, there is a hole near the rear most strap holding the gas tank to the chassis, which is a risk to not only me and my pregnant wife but others driving on the road around me if it where to fall off. Looking at the body, there is no rust or corrosion. The same goes for the engine bay, the rust is entirely located on the frame. Mechanically, the vehicle is in excellent shape. It has now got to the point it will no longer pass a nys inspection.

50 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/20/2022

We took our 2004 4runner for annual vehicle inspection and the service provider told us the vehicle would not pass safety inspection due to the excessive rusting on the steel frame and the suspension of the vehicle. Welding and patchwork will not fix this issue. My husband depends on this vehicle to work. The attached pictures give a small window into the extent of the damage. There is no current recall for this vehicle and year, but similar Toyota trucks from the same time frame have been recalled for the same exact issue. The entire frame needs to be replaced or worst case scenario, the vehicle is no longer usable. Toyota needs to remedy this issue for their loyal customers immediately.

51 Suspension problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

There is severe rust on the frame, the rear is listing by 3/4 of an inch due to suspension rust, parts of the frame are perforated and lots of rust can fall out of drain holes when tapped. I am unable to steer the truck due to the intermediate steering column rust. The tacoma was recalled for the same reason, I am assuming the 4runner has not been recalled because it was manufactured in greater numbers, and therefore more costly to repair, the danger of the severe rust is the same in both vehicles.

52 Suspension problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/06/2022

My car is a 2006 Toyota 4runner. This past summer I had a tire leaking and took it to the garage for repair. The mechanic stated that the frame is rusting out in the front right, tire rod area, and saw a pinhole. Last week I took the vehicle to get a transmission oil change. That mechanic saw that there's more rust that is spreading throughout the entire frame, worse than the area found from just a few months ago. I learned online that Toyota had purposely used cheap steel for the frame and had replaced the same frame used on other trucks such as the tacoma and highlander but is refusing to replace the 4runner. These rusted out frames are affecting many 4runners. I have a 1964 Cadillac and that frame is in better condition than the 4runner. I'm forced to pay $15,000 to replace the frame or salvage my car. It shouldn't have come to this, especially when the same frame that was replace on other trucks isn't being replaced for mine.

53 Suspension problem of the 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

On7/2022 when I came out of my house in the evening my 2018 4runner was not been running for hours but I heard my fuel pump running with no keys in the switch would not stop running until I turned the switch on and then turned it back off and then fuel pump stopped running I reported to my dealer but they didn’t seem interested so I am sending this to you any thing I tell the dealer where I got my 2018 4runner service dealer seems to go unheard. I got my 2018 4 runner brand new in 2018 and I was having issues with the 4runner shaking in the front end and steering wheel and took it back more than 5 times but only to be told it was nothing but. I am still having problems with it but they have not fixed it or anything.

54 Suspension problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

The car shakes when going at speeds as low as 48 mph and as high as 68 mph that I know of. Typically, it shakes heaviest from the mid-50 mph range to the mid-60 mph range. I rarely drive the full speed limit for energy conservation reasons, so I cannot tell you how much higher it goes on the range. The car has had the wheels rebalanced three times (installation, upon purchase from the dealer and on a take back to the dealership), the alignment has been checked twice and I have spoken to the tire manufacturer about the tires being the cause of this. I took the tires into an authorized retailer to no avail. With everything checked, including a road force balancing of the tires, my 4runner still shakes disturbingly. I called a service advisor at another Toyota dealership today (they were not the seller). In describing the problem to him, he cut me off and said it is a known problem. He went on to share that the dealership had been in contact with Toyota corporate. It is disturbing for me as a driver, my passengers and from an engineering standpoint; shaking can never be good. It could easily cause premature and unnecessary wear to drive, suspension and steering parts. It could lead to a serious and fatal accident over time. The shaking, I imagine, could also lead to a problem in less than ideal driving conditions such as rain, snow or ice as well.

55 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

I bought my 2004 Toyota 4runner sport edition as a new car, and have been the sole owner of the vehicle. I have taken good care of it the entire time. Regular car washes, service maintenance and necessary repairs over time. I recently had my 4runner in for repairs and spent a considerable amount of money, over $6,000 in anticipation of driving it for many more years. Following the repairs I was told by the mechanic that the frame was extremely rusted and that the entire frame would need to be replaced. There are large holes rusted through in many areas of the frame and a tremendous amount of rust over the entire frame. Rusted pieces of the frame have fallen off. I fear for the safety of my family and me if I were to drive the vehicle at all. I have barely driven it since learning of the dangerous condition of the frame. I've limited any driving at all to my immediate area, and have driven very carefully and slowly, as I am extremely concerned that there might be a catastrophic failure of the frame while driving and I may be injured or killed, or worse. . . . The vehicle might cause harm or death to another person. I am now basically without a vehicle and have been forced to rely on my daughter's car, leaving the family with only one vehicle. This is a major failure of the vehicle. I can provide photos and video at your request. Toyota must be held accountable for the failure of this frame. The vehicle is now useless. I expect Toyota to rectify this situation immediately. Please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. 56 Suspension problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/04/2022

The undercarriage of my truck is so rusted, that parts are starting to fail. I can not install new tires on the truck at this point until $3000 of rust-damaged parts are replaced and possible frame replaced. I was told that the damage is so extensive, the costs outweigh the repairs, and that in the near future the truck will not be driveable.

57 Suspension problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/29/2022

Frame is rotted out. Mechanic lifted it on hoist and frame is rusted terribly and said not drivable.

58 Suspension problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/22/2022

Vehicle failed inspection due to rust on the frame. Bought vehicle because it is supposedly ruggedly built and for the frame to rust out when the vehicle has 103k miles and not driven off-road for more than a few times since we owned it is ridiculous. Dealer quoted $11k for the frame alone, not including labor. The fact this vehicle shares the platform with the tacoma which was recalled for frame does not make sense. Vehicle was inspected last year (virginia requires annual safety inspections), so given the amount of rust discovered makes me doubt whether or not the Toyota dealership did a thorough job inspecting the vehicle last year. We don't drive the vehicle that much so it doesn't make sense that it would rust som significantly.

59 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/04/2022

My car was inspected by a virginia inspection station and was cited for significant rust holes in the frame which have to be repaired. The frame should not have such significant rust that it needs to be fixed or it will be a hazard on the road. Based on other litigation around Toyota fames from this period of time is seems that this is a systemic issue and should be made to provide a recall based on the safety risk that is present with a frame failure as noted in previous class-action lawsuits. The brian warner et al. V. Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , inc. , class action settlement (united states district court for the central district of California case no. 2:15-cv-02171-fmo-ffm) is a perfect example of the risk to the public if this is not corrected.

60 Suspension problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/30/2022

'the "kdss" (kinetic dynamic suspension system) valve located on the frame under the driver's door had corroded to the point where the oil in the system had begun to leak out. The warning light did come on the dashboard days prior to the leak. Vehicle was taken to a Toyota dealership, where they assessed there was low pressure in the system. The service advisor advised that if the system loses all the fluid, the suspension and handling may be affected when steering or braking at high speeds or when making sharp turns.

61 Suspension problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/26/2022

Since an inspection oct 2021 the rust/corrosive on the frame has become. Dangerously close to rotting thru the entire frame! it’s not driven in the winter months when snow or ice melt (salt) is on the roads to prevent situations like this. With only 75,000 miles always garage kept and maintained like it’s brand new this vehicle might be able to be saved for a model in a shop class to practice welding. Something needs to be done because this ifvvjj.

62 Suspension problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/25/2022

The frame on both sides of the vehicle in the front, where it connects under the radiator crossbar has rusted through. Not feeling to safe about this. Also the transmission cooling lines are also looking thin. The dealership I have maint. Done at informed me of this condition. Can send pictures if needed.

63 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/21/2022

My 4 runner only has 147,000 miles and is a great running vehicle but my frame is rotted badly. I have large holes throughout, the front crossmember under radiator with tow hooks has completely rusted off, and now I found where my rear lower drag link bolts to frame is about to come off. I have had to repair rusty brake lines multiple times. My rear axle carrier just sheds large flakes of rust. I love this truck but now it is almost too dangerous to drive and with all the inflation lately I cannot afford another vehicle.

64 Suspension problem of the 2002 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/18/2022

The contact owns a 2002 Toyota 4runner. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph through a slight right curve, the vehicle independently shifted from side to side without warning nearly causing the vehicle to flip. The contact had an independent mechanic inspect the vehicle and the mechanic discovered severe corrosion throughout the entire subframe of the vehicle. The mechanic informed him that the entire subframe needed to be replaced to ensure safe driving. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

65 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/14/2022

2004 Toyota 4runner, original owner with roughly 210k miles. We took the vehicle to the mechanic concerning a sway bar issue. He informed us that the frame of the vehicle was nearly rusted into and that it's serious safety issue to continue to drive it. It is my understanding the Toyota recalled several other models with this same issue but did not include the 4runner in this recall.

66 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/12/2022

The entire frame is rusted. It's been welded back together on 2 different occasions. The last time it happened I was pulling out of driveway and the vehicle cannot be steered at all. I live in east TN and should not have a rusted frame. This is not an isolated problem. This is a problem with the 4runners and should be recalled. There are literally 1,000's of 4runners with rusty frames. I don't understand why this isn't being recalled. You can reach me at 865-406-7117 or cindybabb789@gmail. Com.

67 Suspension problem of the 2000 Toyota 4Runner

68 Suspension problem of the 2021 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/13/2022

Driving up to 60mph the steering wheel vibrates excessively. I have taken it to the dealer and got repairs to fix it but 2 days later it returned. I had wheels balanced and rotated with an alignment. I fear I will loose control of the SUV soon.

69 Suspension problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

The frame is rusted completely throughout. Very dangerous!.

70 Suspension problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/22/2021

Stabilizer bar connected to the frame rusted off, back passenger side! causing the vehicle to sway uncontrollably, due to the low rate of speed, I was able to regain control of my vehicle and not drive off the bridge I was driving over at the time or crash into another vehicle. The engine runs great, everything works, the vehicle still looks good but the frame is rusting out from underneath it! Toyota needs to make it right!.
