Toyota Avalon owners have reported 6 problems related to brake light on (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Avalon based on all problems reported for the Avalon.
On November 2018 I noticed that my rear deck mounted brake light was out. I thought it was a bulb but the very next day it was back on again. This continued for about a week so I took it to the Toyota dealership and they told me it would be about $400 to take off the rear deck just to see what the actual problem was. I have seen multiple Avalon's with this same unsafe issue. The vehicle also will not pass state safety inspections with this issue. I think an investigation should be conducted on this highly unsafe issue.

While driving my 2005 Toyota Avalon at the medical center in houston, I saw the brake light warning come on. As I continued driving, the brakes continued to fail then I heard a grinding sound and the brake could barely hold. At the time I got home, there was practically no brakes. I had the car towed to a Toyota service center where it was fixed with a cost of $1300. I am yet to pick the car up.

I am writing this for my brother who is the legal owner of the vehicle. (2006 Toyota Avalon) he had regular maintenance at laurel carmax Toyota on July 30th,2009. (including brake and fluid change) in sepetember 7th, he was driving on the road and the brake light turned on. He immediately lost brake and tried to pull over the road in order to stop the car. He took his car to the nearby bodyshop and they found his brake fluid reservoir was empty. They refilled the fluid at the body shop. Few days later, he brought his car back to Toyota dealership to request what's going on with his car. Since he just got brake/fluid change, this issue should not happen. Toyota said they need to "exam" the car first and found out the master cylinder and booster are bad with leaking. The exam cost around $270 and they will charge $1250 for repair the master cylinder and booster. The car has 39000 miles (2 years and 9 months) that is probably not covered under warranty. I just cant believe for being a 2 yrs 9 months old Toyota, how can its brake system just failed like that? my brother was lucky that he was able to stop the car and didn't get hurt. I think Toyota needs to do something about this issue.
