Driver's exterior door handle broke off. Took car to dealer, and comments were this happens all the time on Toyotas (from more than one person in service department on different dates. Being able to open door quickly can be a safety issue. If this is occurring as frequently as Toyota service representatives led to believe, why hasn't Toyota does something to correct?
the grasping portion of handle is all plastic. Problem could most likely be solved easily with a little reinforcement with a durable material.

My 2004 Avalon xls has issues with both front inner door handles chrome peeling and leaving razor sharp edges and leaving lacerations to hands when pulling to open doors at times. The rear inner door pull handles are beginning to bubble and will begin to peel as well. I paid a visit to my local Toyota dealer and they stated there was not a recall or assistance for this issue. This is a big problem in my eyes and do not think I should be responsible for the cost of repairs. Please help me in my next step.

In August of 2001, the rear inside left door handle ceased to work. It had nothing to do with the child's safety latch. The mechanism inside the door broke. Now, in 2002, the same thing happened on the right side. The door handle mechanism inside the door frame quit working. This seems to be more than just a coincidence that first the left side broke and now the right side. This failure could prevent people from exiting the vehicle safely in the event of an emergency. Weatherstripping gasket on left front (driver) door failed causing excessive noise especially at highway speeds.
Both rear door handle mechanisms have failed. If it were one it may be considered a fluke, but since both have failed I believe there is a defect. My safety concern is that the door can not be opened from the inside. The child safety lock is not on but it may be somehow connected to the problem. My safety concern is that if there is a fire in the car or a need for an immediate evacuation of the car, the people in the back seat cannot get out.
