1 Trunk Lid problem of the 2004 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/19/2020

I've noticed that sometimes I smell something burning, electrical, coolant or something. My mechanics finds no leaks, but I checked once and the coolant reservoir was empty, find no leaks. Somehow, the passenger side rear mud flap came off and the trunk lid doesn't line up. It always looks like it's partially opened. When driving I hear and feel rattling sounds that sounds and feels like the front passenger side suspension or body panels. More like the suspension. The person I bought it from had it serviced regularly and had timing chain, O2 sensor, anti-lock brakes checked and fixed or replaced. They also had it completely checked out and anything wrong was fixed. It also gets very poor gas mileage. The steering also doesn't feel quite right, can't really explain that very well, other than it's no quite right. Also, for some reason the battery wouldn't start the car one day and we checked the battery and the cells were dry.

3 Trunk Lid problem of the 2012 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 11/12/2014

The trunk lid falls down even if lifted to highest point. Lid is not sufficiently counterbalanced. If on a slight incline with the nose up, the lid will not open. Dealer tells me (on two separate occasions) that it is operating as designed. Yeah, right, designed to fall on my head. Dealer refuses to do anything since nothing is broken.

4 Trunk Lid problem of the 2012 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

The trunk lid is not sufficiently counterbalanced and falls closed even when raised to its upper limit. Sometimes the lid will not open from the inside switch; it unlocks, but does not open (3 failures). This failed at the dealership. The lid fell closed, numerous times, minor injury to my head (1 time). Toyota tells me nothing is wrong and is functioning as designed.

5 Trunk Lid problem of the 2006 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 05/20/2010

Failure of the hinges and torsion bars that are mounted for the trunk lid of my 2006 Toyota Avalon, limited. The torsion bar rotates into the trunk space about 5 inches and can hit items in the trunk and dislodge the torsion bar and damage a weak mounting bracket. This failure is not graceful but immediate. Upon opening the trunk with the torsion bar dislodged or the bar becomes dislodged the trunk can come back and hit you in the head or a child being held. I notified the dealer and Toyota of the problem and was told that it was covered under the 36000/ 3yr warranty which I exceeded. However, after several more contacts I was able to determine that there was a technical service bulletin bo030-06 issued in December 2006. My concern is that there was never any warning on limiting the useful space in the trunk nor any notification of the potential failure. My concern is that Toyota new about this safety issue and was reluctant to acknowledge the problem and that there was a potential fix that may or may not be sufficient. No corrective action was provided.
