I was driving my 2007 Toyota Avalon returning home from work and was driving on a local road at approximately 25 mph and turning my vehicle towards right on a curved road and the steering wheel seized and car veered and jumped the curb causing the passenger side bottom of car protection plastic guard clips damaged. No other damage to car observed other than minor scratches to front bumper due to tree limbs on grassy island next to curb. Hit the brakes hard and was able to stop vehicle stopping just before it could hit the tree on side of road. No warning lights were illuminated. No air bags were deployed. Was able to restart the vehicle and reversing down on the road and eventually was able to unseize the steering wheel. Was able to drive the car home and will be taking it to either Toyota dealer or vehicle repair shop for further diagnosis. No injures were sustained. No police report was filed. Will be calling the manufacturer to notify steering wheel seizure. The mileage of car was around 205,000+ miles.

The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.
Steering wheel locked up while driving ! no warning lights. Steering bracket assembly is the issue . Same issue with 2000-2004 Avalons …all were recalled and fixed but anything after those years are not recalled or fixed . This is clearly a defect and should be recalled again before someone has a bad accident .
The telescopic steering wheel lever comes loose which will cause the wheel to lurch forward if the brakes are pushed in hard. This could be dangerous. This has happened twice in 2 months.

Purchased car used 11/2020 Jan 14 2021 had 2 open recalls steering casting defect and wire harness filter to deflect noise from ecm . I lost control of communication of operations. 12/2022 steering lock bar the past 2 years uncovered everything on my own. Learned somebody died in 2003 Avalon in texas about steering locking up. Plan to talk to class action lawyers over airbag and steering. And arrange my own lawyer with settlement lawyers to make this repair and all TSB to be performed. I will never buy a car unless I can find all TSB problems associated with that car. I hope recalls can be opened especially when you guys in government state safety ,compliance and emissions do not expire. Recall.

The steering wheel telescoping lever is faulty in that it will loosen in its own causing the steering wheel to lunge forward toward the dash unexpectedly with little pressure while driving.

The engine has quit while in traffic several times and the check engine light and the skid control lights are the only lights lit on the dashboard. Once the car comes to rest and one waits 3 to 5 minutes, the car will restart. We have taken the car to the dealer twice, ( each time the had it for nearly a week) and they could not find the problem. This is a very serious problem because the engine stops without notice causing loss of power steering and total loss of control. The lights for check engine and skid control are sometimes on when this happens, but not always; and the fact that these lights are lit does not predict this event happening. I think there might be a sensor in the engine that is faulty.

I am the owner of the 2007 Toyota Avalon that my son was driving. He experienced a very dangerous situation where his steering wheel getting locked while driving on Dec 10, 2021 afternoon. He stopped the car immediately by slamming on the brakes. The car was towed to a local Toyota dealership, Toyota of redlands, California. The service manager todd klingbeil was able to reproduce the issue based on the earlier Toyota recall information for 2000-2004 Avalons, and they replaced the steering bracket assembly. It is clear that my 2007 Avalon car experienced similar steering locking issue/defect like in the Toyota Avalon 2000-2004 recall bulletin. I brought the matter to the attention of Toyota (manufacturer), but they simply ignored the matter saying there is no recall for 2007 Avalon, and they would not cover the cost nor reimburse me. And they never responded to my fax, emails and phone calls.
The steering tilt lock mechanism is failing. Vibrates loose while driving. It is a non-wear item. Toyota had to recall 2009-2012 models of Avalon for the same problem. My vehicle is a 2015 and is out of warranty and only has 50,000 miles. I did have a service center check it and they confirmed the problem. You can repair this non-wear item you must replace the complete steering column assembly. With parts and labor the cost is @ $1500. Whatever they did to redesign the mechanism since the 2012 model year to fix the problem was not effective. Toyota responded to my letter and declined to take any responsibility.

At approximately 42000 miles with no significant issues and no front end damages, the steering failed as I was driving at highway speed (70 mph) on a 2 lane road approaching a 90 degree curve. The power steering warning light and a separate triangle warning light appeared at the same time as I felt a pop and lost power and response in the steering wheel. Thankfully, I have driven heavy power equipment in the past and was able to control the vehicle to the shoulder and there was no surrounding traffic. I was able to proceed to my residence at a slow speed on the road shoulder with no power steering and an almost unresponsive steering wheel. After being towed to the local dealer, it was determined the torque sensor failed and the entire steering column required replacement. I had no warning of this impending failure. The airbag recall was done on this vehicle by the dealer several weeks prior to this with no reports of an issue. It is unknown if the airbag recall service impacted this catastrophic failure. The dealership was in possession of the faulty part on 8/27/2021, when the repair was completed. I understand there were previous recalls on Avalons pre-2005 for this issue.

I was using the lever to push the seat away from the steering wheel when one side stopped moving, causing the other side to derail. I took the car to jim hudson Toyota immediately, and the technician was able to get seat back on track. However, he wasn't able to get the side moving, and stated the entire seat rail would have to be replaced. Furthermore, I was told I have a leak in the rod and pinion system because the inner seal needs to be replaced. Although, I service my vehicle regularly with fred anderson Toyota, and nothing has ever been said about this.
My paid cash for this Toyota Avalon $5000 worth $2200 the car has 6 recalls none of which were ever investigated by Toyota or anyone else. I first got the car started driving and the belt started smoking before 3 yrs the battery was changed out by advanced auto free / we paid for a new belt then the tire went out 2 x found out theirs a wheel alignment issue with the arms that need replacing toy dealer and american best recommended new arms amer best priced $800 toy dealer priced $3-5k among brakes wipers suspension etc ! toy should be liable to fix the car parts as I went there for help instead they send an est for thousands to fix when there are 6 recalls remaining ! I was in an accident 10/30 someone hit me while driving from behind . The car I believe was in an accident prior to ownership. Everything I mentioned is hazardous and unsafe for manufacturers to continue to build unsafe cars on the road!.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? 1- Aug 2020- mega moters- purchassed auto- carfax and auto guro- recommended this vehiscal and sales pitch included these companies- he said he does good business- he said he will fix all issues if the issue was with-in 30 days- car drove fine- he put an inspection sticker- it did not smoke then because he had a helper who started the car and placed inspection sticker readin 10;2021? but it was August 2020? the helper drove it to the front of the dealership- after I paid 7000. 00 and thus did not see start up smoke at the dealership 2. At start up - took my two sisters for a test drive- grey smoke- same day- as purchassed - shock issues-suspention and dealer- my sister was driving as I called to tell him I loved the car and it seemed to run fine- except for the smoke andred oil light and the shocks- suspention- uncomfortable scraping sound- I will fix- as he said he forgot to put the new oil cap on oil and sensor- he said he would place the tire shocks to fix suspention. 2- I live fairly close- and only drive short distance- light of oil came on- but gages read normal- miles were at 9800, drove fine- just was concerned about the loud scrap sound on any dips on road and the smoke- at start up - and dealer at mega mortor- said- to bring it in he forgot to put a sensor and the shocks he has them at the shop and the new oil cap- 2 returned the following morning- no one was at the shop- I called him he said he would be there at 10 am- - the car smoked at start increased- - he was not there at 1030am- called him he said he could not fix it as he was busy- he asked me to come in the next day- I called no answer- called again- and he said he needed me to bring it Saturday morning- and he will fix- he was rude and said he was busy- it was September- and the car is hazard- it stopped on my way into his shop and got it home- I got covid 10-2020 to 4/2020- longhaul-.
The contact owns a 2018 Toyota Avalon. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 20v024000 (air bags) however, the part for the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40 mph when another cut in front of them and in order to avoid hitting the other vehicle the contact veered to the left, the contact ended up crashing into a side barrier on the side of the road. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The contact received injuries to his left arm, leg and chest/torso area medical attention was needed. The vehicle was towed. The contact contacted the unknown dealership who diagnosed that the left side of the vehicle, steering, and braking needed to be repaired. The vehicle had received repairs to the body, steering, and brakes of the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was still difficult to steer and there was a rumbling coming from underneath the vehicle whenever driving or braking the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the issues, however, there was no resolve provided. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000. VIN tool confirms remedy not yet available.
When driving on the interstate speed between 60-70 mph the car suddenly jerks to the right. I had the car checked because it felt scary (as if I would hit the car in the next lane) I had the problem checked through a reputable service center- the torque steering was off; car jerked with acceleration.
While driving down the highway the at 70 mph telescopic steering wheel collapsed.
I was traveling on I-294 south in the vicinity of, south highland, illinois traveling about 70 miles per hour. I was next to the median. There was a car next to me that was behind an 18 wheeler, pulling an extra trailer. The 18 wheeler swerved to miss a car and as a result of the 18 wheeler swerving, the car next to me swerved to miss the trailer; when that happened I swerved to my left because of the vehicle. As I did so my vehicle made contact with the emergency strip that makes a nose like your tires are flat, almost instantly it appeared that I was pulled into the wall median. There was no way that I could have corrected that with all the strength that I was putting into getting my vehicle back in the lane.
On June 7, 2019, I was driving the Avalon, the engine suddenly stopped while I was driving the vehicle on city street. With the loss of power steering and brakes, I was traumatized and did my best to guide the vehicle to side of the road. I had the vehicle towed home and hooked up to a code reader, which yielded codes p0345, p0300, p0302, p0304, p0306. We did further diagnostics and discovered the 3 bolts that hold the variable-valve timing (vvt) gear to the intake camshaft came loose, these bolts are supposed to be temper-resistant and never be removed which led me to believe the result of engine dying is caused by serious manufacturing and design defects. Please refer to attached three pictures showing 3 bolts laying next to vvt gear, vvt gear loosely held on and the vibration of bolt left cutting mark on the gear, and all intake cam rockers falling out. I did more research and concluded the root cause of engine stopped while the vehicle is being driven in our Avalon is identical to Toyota safety recall 13v-395 in Lexus vehicles 2006 to 2011. Please find attached two documents, rcrit-13v395-3180. Pdf on recent recall for Toyota safety recall 13v-395, rcdnn-13v395-1839. Pdf on defect information report from Toyota to NHTSA on Lexus intake-side variable-valve timing (vvt) system part 573. On June 27, 2019, I called stevens creek Toyota and Toyota hq and logged case #1906242897. I was informed by Toyota there's no recall for Avalon with the VIN, and the vehicle had no factory warranty (currently 153k miles), and no extended warranty with engine stall for Avalon. As a result, we need to repair the vehicle in our own expense which requires engine rebuilt as engine stall has caused severe damage to the vehicle. I was appalled by Toyota for lack of initiation to address the safety risk in our Avalon and we appreciate your thorough investigation in this matter.

Steering wheel telescoping lever comes loose often. The lever comes loose about every 500 miles . I have resorted to making sure it it tight every time I get in the car.
Car's steering stops turning while driving in the initial 5 minutes of drive, it occurs mostly when weather is humid ( raining). The episode occurs when I try to turn the steering and recovers after I forcibly turn the stiff steering.
Telescopic steering wheel lever will randomly drop, causing the steering wheel to collapse. Happens while the car is in motion.
Air bag dashboard light occasionally flickers and begins to glow for a few seconds. Seems to occur more frequently in wet weather. My steering wheel will lock when I turn left or right while driving. Reversed backwards a little bit and wiggled the steering wheel, it wouldn't budge then I went forward and wiggled and it finally loosened. This has happened 4 times and usually in wet weather. My car is listed in the air bag recall of 2015; however, I have not been notified of what to do next and it has now been more than 3 years since first notification.

My steering wheel will lock when I turn left or right while driving . . This morning I was just starting my car and was turning left and my steering wheel locked and I went up the sidewalk and almost hit the fence and I couldn't move it I reversed backwards a little bit and wiggle the steering wheel and it wouldn't budge then I went forward and wiggled and it finally loosened. My car has been on a manufacturer recall since November 3, 2015. Manufacturer recall number fov NHTSA recall number 15v728 recall status : recall incomplete in certain driving situations, the optional pre-collision system (pcs) could interpret a steel road joint or steel plate in the road surface as an obstacle or vehicle in the path of travel and activate. When the system activates, my vehicle's brakes are applied automatically. The system activates brake assist mode, and my front seatbelts may tighten. I will hear a warning buzzer, the pcs indicator lamp will illuminate and a message will appear on the multi information display.

The locking lever on the adjustable steering wheel will with out notice release itself causing the steering telescoping feature to become loose and difficult to maintain steering control needing to adjust and reposition the locking lever to regain steering control while the vehicle is moving. I just purchased the used one owner 2011 Avalon with only 28,000 miles on it. The problem has occurred six times in a one month period.

While driving the steering wheel adjustment lever drops on it's own and the steering moves in and out. It's hazardous for driving as well as for knee injuries.
1)steering-when trying to go straight car will tilt to the left, have to keep wheel at weird angle to maintain a straight line. 2)accelerator sticks accelerator seems stiff and sticky and causes car to lurch when starting from a stop -was making left turn through intersection on a city street February 4th and accelerator stuck until it was pumped, increasing my speed. Was terrifying. 3)rust ridden roters and break anti-rust covers not working at all 4)visibility-windshield's seal seems defective-VIN number not visible due to condensation building in lower corner, windshield fogs up profusely and stays that way even with defroster making it difficult to see out of front windshield 5)heater-blows cooled air (not room temp) instead of warm when turned on, seems like computer error in thermostate/temperature gage 6)side windows shake/studder when rolled up or down.
