Lever that controls telescoping steering wheel drops down while driving and could be a potential safety problem causing loss of control. According to the dealer this was never a recall but was covered under a warranty extension. According to Toyota they sent out letters beginning in April 2014 advising owners of the problem. We never received a letter. Toyota further advises us that the window for free repair of the defect closed on may 31,2015 and they will not pay to fix it. Why was this not made an official recall? I have injured my knee several times entering the vehicle.

Car was taken in 05/2016 for recall work to replace srs and ecu. After recall repair, intermittent pax side airbag light flashes on and off saying passenger airbag issue. Dealer refuses to do more than specified recall replacement. We now cannot tell if we have airbags that will work and if the restraint system will tension the seat belts in an accident. The additional issue is that the front springs and struts have a flaw that makes a well aligned car, pull left. We are replacing this Toyota flaw at our own expense despite the presence of a service notice.

My 2009 Toyota now has 85000 miles on it and I have just been told that there is a problem with a torn cv and power steering boot along with a return hose. The power steering unit is leaking and the price tag to repair these items is $1912. 21. In reading my consumer reports trouble spot report I see that this has been a problem for other owners from 2007 through 2010 and I am surprised that Toyota has not resolved this problem by issuing a recall for that specific defect.

I was just coming off the expressway driving from 75 mph, down to 35 getting off the ramp. As I exited onto the ramp I noticed that the steering was getting really hard to control and had a pounding noise . From that location it took about three more big turns where I had an extremely hard time turning the wheel. When I got home, checked levels in power steering fluid, which needed a little more, so I filled it ,and coolant levels looked normal. I drove around the block to see if it made a difference. It was actually getting worse. Now the pounding noise got louder and it was still really hard to turn, and eventually developed a clicking/grinding noise. So now I'm going to call Toyota to see if they have a recall to cover what is going on.
The recall notices was received in April, 2015. But the part needed to fix the problem was not available. The recall notices said "Toyota is preparing sufficient parts to support installation of sub-wire harness. . . . We will send another notification when preparation are complete". My concern is that me and my family are currently driving around in an unsafe vehicle. The recall notice went on to say "the front airbag and/or seatbelt pretensioners could inadvertently deploy" my question is when is this problems going to be fixed. I have not taking this car on a major trip since this recall because I feel my family is at risk. I would appreciate a response to this inquiry. This recall correction need to be completed. The horn works when it wants to and the steering wheel sometimes moves. The car sits lower than it should causing the tires to scrape.
While driving in heavy traffic on I-26 through columbia, s. C. , the lever that holds the steering wheel in position after adjustment by drivers became dis-engaged causing the steering wheel quickly fall forward causing me to lose partial control and swerve slightly before I could regain full control. I reported this to the service manager at johnson city Toyota on my return home. I returned again a month later to report another incident and found the first report was not recorded. I, as well as my wife have had this dangerous situation occur at least once and sometimes twice a month for more than a year. I checked your data base and found that many other Avalon owners registered this same complaint.

2013 Toyota Avalon. Consumer writes in regards to steering wheel malfunction. The consumer stated while driving, he heard a strange noise coming from under the passenger seat. As he made a turn, the steering wheel did not respond and instead of snapping back into a 12 o'clock position, it stayed locked into the turn. He could not turn the wheel to straighten out the vehicle. As he looked up, he saw he was about to crash into an oncoming vehicle. With no time to react, he hit the oncoming vehicle, in a front end collision. At the time of the crash, he was only going about 15 mph. The other driver sustained a neck injury and a bump on the top of his head, when he hit the roof on impact and the consumer suffered whiplash. After the vehicle was repaired, the consumer heard the same noise a before, right before the accident occurred. Toyota claimed there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Steering wheel telescoping lock fails repeatedly during normal driving.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign number: 10v345000 (steering) was performed however, the failure was not corrected. The steering wheel became hard to turn and made a loud clicking noise. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 155,995.
Telescoping lever releases by itself causing whole steering wheel to suddenly collapse to seated (lowest) position. Extremely dangerous driving within speed limit (55 mph) while on highway. It happens suddenly, unexpected and totally inexcusable if an accident which could be fatal occur. There numerous complaints but no authorized repairs from the manufacture at this time which is somewhat disappointing due to the fact that this is a "saftey issue". Please help us in getting this matter resolved since it has been going on for years, fortunately I think there hasn't been any fatalities "yet".

Telescopic lever is released and steering wheel makes toward on the highway in driving. This is my 3rd time experience. How can steering wheel lock is released without any warning in driving. According the 2008 Toyota Avalon manual, Toyota already makes caution like this. (page61) "after adjusting the steering wheel. Make sure that the steering wheel is locked. Otherwise, the steering wheel may move suddenly, possibly causing an accident and resulting in death or serious injury. " "while driving. Do not adjust the steering wheel. Doing so may cause the driver to mishandle the vehicle and an accident, resulting in death or serious injury. " Toyota manufacturer already understand if steering wheel is unlocked or release in driving, causing in death or serious injury. I think Toyota motor company makes recall and fix this problem as soon as possible.
The steering lever moved down and the steering wheel dropped in 2-3 inches while the car was moving.
75 n traveling 65 mph there was a loud snap under car. Car tried to veer to left several times pulled back thought it was under control when speed increased car darted right head on into retaining wall bounced off did 2 1/2 360 degree spins hit wall again broadside and finally came to stand still. When speed increased and car shot to right all control was lost.
The steering started to bind when it started getting cold. It got to the point where it felt like no power steering existed intermittently. While making turns it would also bind, making it hard to straighten the wheel back as I am coming out of the turn, which was the most dangerous situation. Initial repair shop suggested changing the serpentine belts. That did not make a difference. Next I took it to the dealer, who replaced upper steering shaft. This seemed to improve but not solve the issue. I just went back, and now they replaced the steering rack and lower shaft. Now it appears corrected. While looking on the web, this seems to be a common occurrence, so I feel this should qualify as a safety recall.
The telescoping steering wheel lock unlocked without warning and the steering wheel went full forward. The lock had also come unlocked about a week prior but I had noticed it and corrected it prior to the wheel going forward. I did some research on the internet today and notice that there are numerous sites with complaints of this same nature about the Avalon.
2011 Toyota Avalon. Consumer states problem with parking brake and steering wheel the consumer stated the parking brake did not hold on a 6% grade with the transmission in neutral. The dealer adjusted it to specification, but the brake still did not hold. The steering wheel telescope clamp level vibrated loose, allowing the steering wheel to telescope without warning. The dealer indicated the malfunction was somewhat common, but Toyota had not issued a repair bulletin.
This is an intermitend problem and it happens when starting on the car. To turn the car on I have to take the steering wheel and forcefully turn it left and right. Move also the shifter to neutral. I also try to press the brake at the same time. Mechanics have not been able to duplicate the problem. The car was also checked by a Toyota dealer and the problem was not identified. The battery and the cables are working properly. Now it is happening very often and creating a security and safety issue. I checked the recalls for this car associated with this situation I did not find an answer although I have read lots of related complains. I am planning to change the ignition or the starter but probably is a try and error solution.
