1 Air Bag On-off Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2016

July 2016, check engine light came on. Diagnostic indicated code p171. Was advised it was a laundry list of systems to check for this code. ( replaced the following; flex pipe, 02 sensor, spark plugs and fuel pump. For a total of 1400. 00) while driving on I-95 at 60 mph, airbag light, brake light, abs light and seat belt light all illuminated at the same time. Techometer surged out of control, engine temp gauge displayed no reading and speedometer went to zero. Oh and yeah, the ac that was blowing very cold air switched to warm or hot. All of these issues happened at the same time on the highway at 60 mph. Ironically, the check engine light did not illuminate and the mechanic is unable to determine the cause as there is no code issued from the computer for this very dangerous problem. This problem happens randomly and there is no warning. The engine performs normal during this issue with the exception of the ac that fails every time. This issue can and has happened when the car is sitting parked with engine running and while in motion. I am so afraid that this eventually will cause a serious accident or death. And the most annoying part is no mechanic can tell any of us why this happens or how to fix it. Please, please, help us before the worst happens.

2 Air Bag On-off Switch problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2010

I was driving down the highway and attempted to switch lanes. I hit the car in front of me in the rear and there was significant frontal damage to my car. My body was stopped by the impact of the steering wheel. I am now sore in my neck and back region.

3 Air Bag On-off Switch problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2007

I recently purchased a new 2007 Camry le automobile from a Toyota dealership. The passenger side airbag activation weight sensor is inconsistent in behavior and unable to readjust to a new weight reading during a trip. My wife weighs approximately 100 lbs plus clothes. One time out of seven the airbag sensor will not register her as being sufficiently heavy to activate the airbag. I once restarted the car seven times to try to get it to register. I then moved myself (174 lbs plus clothes) to the passenger seat, started the car with an empty driver's seat, got out of the car and let my wife sit in the passenger seat. The airbag came on while I was sitting there, and did not change (to off) after my wife replaced me during the 20 minute trip. I have had to use this technique each time the sensor refuses to turn the airbag on when my wife is the front passenger. I have taken the vehicle into two different Toyota dealerships to have the sensor checked out, and they both insist it is working fine. I suspect that Toyota is using substandard parts that do not deal well with moderately high external temperatures; such as those not found inside a climate controlled maintenance bay. I fear that in haste we may miss one time it does not turn on and get into a serious collision that injures my wife.
