The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that whenever striking the gear selector, the gear shifter would erroneously shift into neutral because the gear selector was not designed with a switch to engage. The failure recurred twice while driving at various speeds. In addition, the size and length of the front driver side head rest significantly obstructed the visibility of the driver. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician stated that the vehicle was functioning as designed. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The failure mileage was 7,000.

A coin was easily lodged between the plastic covering of the shifter and the console. The coin easily worked its way down into the shifter mechanism. The plastic covering came out of its track and began to buckle. The buckling of the plastic covering led to inability to shift gears easily and timely. Eventually, the buckling became so intense, the plastic covering independently shifted the gears from drive to neutral twice while on the interstate. To be able to drive the car and shift gears without constant undo pressure from the buckling plastic cover, the driver would need to pull the plastic covering out completely, exposing the shifting mechanism to other objects and liquids---the plastic covering sits immediately in front of the drink holders. I reported the problem to Toyota. At the local and national level, Toyota does not view this as a safety issue.

My 03 Camry with 22k miles, automatic transmission, has an issue with the safety button on the shifter, or the shifter itself. With the engine off and no key in the ignition, I can slide the shifter from park to any other gear, without pressing in the safety button. I cannot slide the shifter back into park. Here's how I found out. I parked in my drive, put the car in park, removed the keys, grabbed my shopping bag and went inside. My husband came in a few minutes later with some shocking news. Apparently, my Camry had rolled down the drive, took out our mailbox, went across the street and stopped in our neighbor's front yard. Our drive is over 100' long and slopes down toward the street. I handed my husband the keys and he went to the car. It was in drive. What I can figure is that when I grabbed my shopping bag, which was fairly heavy, I hit the shifter and took the car out of park. But that doesn't explain how the shifter was able to move without my pushing in the safety button. I called Toyota customer relations in torrance, and they arranged a service appt for me at the dealer. The dealer indicated they had to make an adjustment. During a follow-up call from their customer service rep, they indicated they had never heard of the problem before. When I asked if it could happen again, the rep said if it does, bring it in. I will try very hard to remember to use my emergency brake whenever I park my car. But what if I forget? I don't want to be responsible for my car rolling into a child, adult or other vehicle. It is only dumb luck that no one was hurt when the car rolled down our drive. Had it been daytime, the chances are very high that someone would have been injured or killed. We live on a cul DE sac, and those in our development walk with their children on a regular basis throughout the day. This is very frightening. Are you aware of this issue happening previously?.
I shifted from "park" to "drive", the transmission assembly cable broke. The vehicle had to be towed. A dealership claimed to have part in stock, upon arrival I was told part was not available to me for purchase. I special ordered & paid for the part & was told it would be in 8/11/04. On that date I was told there were none of these cables in the u. S. , the earliest eta was 8/16/04. This was revised by sandy, Toyota parts delay team, to eta 8/18/04.

While driving 60 mph, passenger lightly touched shift lever as she turned on air conditioner, it shifted to neutral. This has happened two more times, dealer stated this was the design of the vehicle. These events were caused by inadvertent brush of the gear shift handle when reaching across. Consumer discovered that a very light tap to the gear shift while in "d" causes it to shift into neutral and instantly decelerate.
Transmission linkage problems. When slowing at traffic lights or while in motion, upon acceleration, transmission downshifts and then upshifts abruptly in a very disturbing abnormal way. It happens constantly during normal city driving. You must be very careful to be "gentle" when accelerating after slowing down. This will be my very last Toyota.
2005 Toyota Camry missing two bolts. Consumer states that the shifter cable bracket bolts are missing. He also states that the transmission was affected by this problem. When put into gear the gear did not engage. When the gear was shifted into neutral the vehicle would back up, when it was shifted into to drive there was no movement, but when it was shifted into 3rd gear, the vehicle went forward.
