I purchased a certified preowned vehicle from fowler Toyota in [xxx] , and after complaining multiple times about my engine being too loud, a musty smell in my trunk, the attempting to clean my trunk and me pointing out rust spots in the trunk and the smell returning multiple times, and a sulfur smell that continued to get worse month after month, they finally listened to me the 3rd week of November and discovered that this car that had a previous cosmetic accident to the rear of the car before being certified, indeed had a failing catalytic converter, a misaligned trunk as well as a busted strut among other issues. There was exhaust getting into my car, causing myself, headaches, my [xxx] and [xxx] to take a nap as soon as I would pick them up from school every day for the last month that I had it before they took it in November that all of this resolved after I was given a rental. I also periodically on a weekly basis, took my pregnant daughter to her doctors appointment so she was exposed as well. My husband occasionally rode with me also among other people. After 3 1/2 months of my car being “fixed”, it was returned to me and I was told it was in perfect condition and Toyota corporate had inspected it. Approximately 10 days after picking it up, I took a long drive out on a highway with traffic lights on my way back. I started to fall asleep. I feel like I had bricks on my eyelids and it was only 3:30 in the afternoon. I almost crashed into a wall on the side. I rolled my window down and instantly felt better. I purchased a carbon monoxide monitor and after three days it registered and went off at a level of 49. I tried to take it in after calling the dealer that day, but they did not have a car for me. They only had a 4runner that I’m not comfortable driving so I had to wait another 36 hours on a car. The next day, the carbon monoxide detector went off and registered at 315 only in a parking lot. No lights on my car are showing anything is wrong. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information a.

2018 Camry with very low mileage (appx 38,000) and had all its required services done, suddenly had a check engine light. Less than a minute after that, "coolant temp high - stop where it's safe" message popped up. Service center indicated it was a failed water pump (diagnostic codes p26cb71, u0073, u016387, u0163, p26cb). Coolant was gone. Multiple users for 2018/2019 have reported this water pump failure on r/camry [xxx] does not seem safe to have a car go from no problem to near catastrophic engine failure with virtually no warning information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2019 Camry se would not accelerate and rpm’s would escalate without making car move. Car has had complete maintenance on a regular basis. There have been no prior lights on or alerts until my son’s car stalled in traffic almost leading to side collision. Once it was plugged up to computer shows faulty transmission (complete transmission failure) and engine coolant bypass valve which I know has a tbs report on yet my local dealership refuses to do anything with it unless they charge me to hook up to their computer first and deny any issues with this car. I have read hundred of others with the same complaint and numerous lawsuits yet Toyota refuses to recall and fix the faulty transmissions in these vehicles. Something needs to be done before someone is killed, as my son could have been when his car stalled in middle of traffic and transmission failed with no prior warnings.
I paid off my var in June. By the ed of August my cars engine started going bad out of no where. Started with oil and coolant mixing into the engine and then transmission started whining. Long story short I had to get both replaced. Oh yea my car only has 56k miles. Can you guys explain or give me any ideas on how this happened?.

Incident highway malfunction occurs – [xxx] while driving at a steady speed on the highway, my 2020 Toyota Camry unexpectedly shifted gears on its own. I did not bump the gear shifter or interact with the controls in any abnormal way. The gear shift occurred without warning or driver input, while the vehicle was in motion. A “drive start control malfunction” warning appeared on the dashboard at the time of the incident. Vehicle towed to Toyota service center – July 11 2025 following the incident, I brought the car to a Toyota dealership for diagnosis and repair. I spoke with a service advisor named rebecca, explained the situation, and clearly stated that I did not hit or touch the gear. The vehicle was kept for inspection, repair and I communicatied with Toyota. Vehicle picked up – July 16, 2025 I picked up my car from the Toyota dealership on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. I had not yet heard back from Toyota about coverage or resolution. I chose to wait for further communication regarding whether they would take responsibility for the malfunction. Toyota corporate follow-up call – July 23, 2025 on Tuesday, July 23, 2025, Toyota corporate called to inform me that the repair would not be covered, citing that the vehicle is out of warranty. What disturbed me most was that the representative claimed I had told rebecca that I might have “bumped the gear,” which is completely false. I made it clear from the beginning that I never touched the gear shifter, and that the malfunction occurred while I was driving normally. This false statement was either a miscommunication or a lie — and it minimizes the seriousness of a potential safety defect. Response to Toyota’s misrepresentation – July 23, 2025 during the call, I told Toyota that misrepresenting my account was unacceptable and dangerous. If Toyota is aware that this vehicle model may experience uncommanded gear changes while in motion and fails to report. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The engine quit running whenever the headlights, turn signals, or wipers were turned on. This was obviously a serious safety problem when driving! it began intermittently on 6/30/25, but it became a consistent problem by 7/7/25, so I took the car to the closest Toyota dealership for evaluation. I can provide their service report to you if requested. It took them 6 hours and $1000 to diagnose the problem as bad electrical grounding points (high resistance), which were only revealed after they removed the front bumper. In my opinion, it is an unsafe design to have poor grounding for headlights cause the engine to die.

Component/system failed: the electronic control module (ecm) and related wiring were compromised by a dealer-installed lojack anti-theft system. The device was spliced into wiring near the airbag system and ecm, causing repeated faults. The component remains in the vehicle and is available for inspection. Safety risks: 1. Wiring near airbags may interfere with deployment. 2. Ecm faults risk stalling, loss of power, or emissions failure. 3. Hidden wiring increases short-circuit risk, especially near coolant areas. 4. These conditions place driver and passenger safety at risk. Problem confirmation & inspections: the issue has been reproduced in multiple dealer visits. One Toyota dealer identified the improper lojack installation as the likely root cause. Service records are available. Warning lamps: yes. Check engine lights and warning messages appeared within months of purchase and continue intermittently. Summary: the car was sold as a Toyota gold certified pre-owned (cpo) vehicle, advertised as thoroughly inspected and protected. In reality, it contained an undisclosed modification that created hidden defects, repeated ecm errors, and safety concerns. Concern: the ecm is covered by the 8-year/80,000-mile federal emissions warranty and the 7-year/100,000-mile gold cpo warranty. Yet Toyota denied my arbitration claim as “ineligible. ” if such cases are refused, it means dealers can install aftermarket systems, charge buyers, and avoid accountability. In that situation, the Toyota gold cpo program becomes meaningless—a consumer deception rather than protection. Request: I respectfully ask NHTSA to investigate whether dealer-installed systems like lojack pose systemic safety risks and whether Toyota’s warranty and arbitration processes are adequately protecting consumers.
This vehicle, and models with the same throttle body and air filter/air duct assembly have an issue. Where plastic parts from the vacuum box attached to the air duct come loose and get stuck in the throttle body. Causing the engine to rev up then die. I have dealt with this same issue twice in the last three weeks. Thank you for your time.
When I either: I) start the car and drive more than 20 ft or ii) am at a stop light then accelerate. . The car begins to jerk backward. Have changed the gasket and the throttle body and this issue still keeps happening. It started around the 90k mile mark.
Uncontrollable sudden acceleration 3 times while I drove the car, it suddenly and rapidly accelerated. Eventually, the car crashed and was totaled. The first time was 3/31/25 when my wife and I went to the car wash. To exit the car wash, I put the car in drive and lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. I immediately braked and the car went back to normal. Over 3 years nothing like this happened before. The 2nd time was only 8 days later. On 4/8/25, I was driving the car at moderate speed in the center lane of a large street and while changing from the middle lane to the right lane to prepare to turn right at the next street, the car started accelerating rapidly and to make a loud noise. Fortunately, I was able to brake and the car went back to normal. We went to the Toyota dealer the next day 4/9/25 and told our concerns to the service advisor and the shop foreman. They checked the car, including with a computer. The foreman and I both drove the car. He said they did not find any mechanical/electronic issues and the only explanation is that if I hit the cruise control (which I never use), as he saw my hand close to that button while I drove. He said to avoid the cruise control and it will be ok. They did not charge us for the visit. The third time was on 6/15/25 when we again went to the car wash. I was very careful as this was the same location as our first time. Just like before, I lightly applied the accelerator pedal and suddenly the car accelerated rapidly and made a loud noise. However, the acceleration was much more rapid than before and I was not able to brake in time and the car crashed into the pole of the car wash about 45 feet away. The airbags deployed and the car was totaled. We were pulled from the wreckage and ended in the emergency room. Luckily no one was seriously injured. Enclosures: my 4/8/25 text, 4/9/25 dealership visit paperwork, and photo after the crash on 6/15/25.

While driving at speed over 45 mph or going up a steep hill car starts to shutdown and shudder causing a serious safety concern. I could have been killed. I understand this is related to oil consumption problem that Toyota has failed to address in the 2014 model. What can be done? this is criminal!.

The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment. After a visual inspection, the contact observed that the oil level was abnormally low despite the vehicle being serviced within 2,000 miles. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and an oil consumption test was performed, and was still ongoing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 200,000.

Low braking power message is on and brake to floor and vehicle does not brake properly cause: diagnosed concern, found vaccum pump not producing vaccum causing concern, inspected and found vaccum pump broken and camshaft broken, pieces broken off inside engine. States low braking power message is on and brake pedal drops to floor and vehicle does not brake properly.
I am reporting a brake failure issue that matches the symptoms described in NHTSA campaign number 19v-544 (Toyota recall for brake booster vacuum pump failure). My 2018 Camry has experienced loss of brake assist, making it difficult to stop safely and requiring excessive pedal pressure. Despite these symptoms and the known recall for this issue, my VIN is not currently included. This raises concerns that the recall scope was too limited and that my vehicle should be included. I have contacted both the dealer and Toyota corporate, and I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this defect further and consider expanding the recall. This is a serious safety issue.
The car accelerated uncontrollably for no apparent reason. I was pulling into a parking slot, preparing to put the car in park and stop the car. All of a sudden the car accelerated and slammed into a building.

Awd hybrid vehicle makes a noise at speeds under 20mph , that sounds like an electric motor or bearing - salesman said the noise is a mandated law by NHTSA ? or ? month later the maintenance tech forman took it for a test drive and said the same thing . That the noise was created (by a speaker ?) so the vehicle can be heard at low speeds / below 20 mph . I asked where the speaker is , he said he didn't know ! I asked if he could show me it on a diagnostics screen , he again refused . The noise sounds exactly like an electric motor . Mg1 , mg2 ? I can't hear the noise when backing out of a driveway or similar low speed situations ? I need to verify if this is true - is there an actual law that the vehicle has to make a noise ? and it was okayed to use a noise that sounds like the hybrid electric motor or bearing ? even if this is true the computer logic should be changed so that the sound pulses so that it is obviously a speaker and not a mechanical issue . ( like no grease ) and it should always work when it is most needed , backing up and slow driving / all the time under 20 mph . Service department should plug in a diagnostic scanner and prove to me that a speaker is making the noise . * why is this a safety issue ? because if they are lying , eventually ( when it is out of warranty ) this vehicle will break down . Are all 2025 Toyota hybrids making some kind of noise ? and if it is a noise created by a speaker - prove it are all 2025 Camrys making this same noise ? maybe they all have the same mechanical problem ? why wait till there is a crash , fire , or an accident ? as in the next section - additional details . And again if it is a legitimate noise generated for safety . At the least change the computer logic so it pulses and doesn't sound like a bad motor generator bearing . And have the maintenance techs trained to know where the speaker actually is . I don't want to share my personal information with Toyota . If they are lying.
This was a recall due to the coolant valve Thursday, my vehicle had went in for the recall I picked up my vehicle Friday morning I checked to make sure the part that they have changed nothing wrong with it or not. When I looked at the part a day after I noticed pink stuff is leaking from around it this was announced by Toyota this is the new part they had just made I’m assuming and it is still leaking I have a 2020 Toyota Camry. With 141,000 miles. And now I am having issues. Toyota needs to redesign this piece or have a further investigation on it.
Engine—was told by dealership that we needed a new motor because of lack of oil in engine - had not seen oil drips or any smoking out of muffler. No lights on dashboard. Only been serviced by dealership. Told us; we needed to keep check and add oil as needed until we decided on a new motor or trade. Either is not a good option because of expense. We are probably going to bite the bullet and have to trade with not being able to get much out of trade because of this. The car is in very good condition, no wrecks and had hoped we were to get more mileage. We keep check and add oil. Know this is just a complaint, but am sure others had same problem.

Intermittently, when leaving from a stop the car will have just enough power to pull forward about a car length before losing all drive power. The engine revs, but behaves as if it were in neutral. This happened a couple times when making a left turn from a stop sign leaving the car in cross traffic, powerless, with cars coming from the drivers side for a second or two before it had power again. It seems to happen in hot weather. It is intermittent. The dealership could not reproduce the problem. There were no warning lamps. I could make the vehicle available for inspection upon request. The first appearance was last summer. It did not do it over the winter. It happened again yesterday. When it happens it tends to happen for a few minutes before driving normally again. It may happen at start up or after the car has been driven for some time.
Check engine light went on and the car’s temperature gage started going up rapidly. Pulled to the side of the road and turned the car off. The problem was the electric water pump and thermostat which I bought at Toyota parts, the car only has 29,090 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving, the "check oil" warning light illuminated. The contact added oil to the engine. The contact was informed that the check oil warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where an oil consumption test was performed. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil. The contact was adding several quarts of oil every 1,000 miles driven. The vehicle was not repaired due to cost. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the extended warranty had been exceeded. The failure mileage was approximately 137,000.

I purchased my 2007 Toyota Camry brand new. Since early ownership, the vehicle has suffered from excessive engine oil consumption. Toyota acknowledged this issue and performed major engine repairs at a Toyota dealership, including replacing pistons and piston rings under their oil consumption program, but the defect continued. The vehicle continues to consume approximately 1. 5 quarts of oil every 1–2 months. This defect affects engine reliability and long-term safety. Despite these repairs, the oil consumption problem was never resolved. I was instructed by Toyota to track the amount of oil I was forced to purchase and was told I would be reimbursed. I complied, but Toyota never reimbursed me. I have an extensive repair history with Toyota. A Toyota dealership technician informed me that my repair history is unusually extensive and described it as a “book” in Toyota’s system. The vehicle continues to consume excessive oil, requiring frequent top-offs that pose a risk of engine failure if not constantly monitored. Toyota has failed to permanently correct a known defect despite repeated repair attempts. I believe this is a widespread defect affecting 2007 Toyota Camry vehicles equipped with the 2az-fe engine and request NHTSA review this matter.
Only when it rains the forward collision warning light comes on. The last time it came on the engine light also came on with code p01280. Diagnostic at Toyota said the thermostat needs to be replaced. I decided to look into this as the thermostat should not be bad at 54500 miles. Weeks later and the neither light has come on again.
Vehicle has a safety issue involving the vehicles electric water pump. The water pump failed causing the vehicle to be unusuable until the electric motor is replaced. No warning when it failed, left consumer in the road blocking traffic.
I started hearing a "noise" over the course of 2 weeks. When the accelerator was depressed, the vehicle never accelerated. The vehicle also seemed as though it was losing power, but no lights ever came on. I have only taken my vehicle to the dealership to be serviced. The maintenance has been done regularly and without fail. When I brought the car in for regular maintenance I had them check for the noise and they said they didn't find anything. I took a video before leaving for work the following day, and brought the car back. Because it sounded it was coming from the wheel well they charged me for a diagnostic and said one of the plates for my brakes was bent. The following day it was still making the same noise, but when I went to accelerate the car shut off in the middle of a major highway and then the check engine lights started flashing. I took it back to the dealership and they claimed it was an air flow component, said it would be repaired, and kept the car for 5 days. After the repair, it was still making the "noise" and that is when they said it was the transmission and I would be responsible for the repair. This happened at 150,098 miles. Needless to say, I will not be paying for that repair. I believe this is a Toyota issue and the customer, especially one who has been religious in maintenance and upkeep, should not have to bear the cost of a their design failure. I was also told although in the maintenance manual, Toyota has decided against flushing the transmission because it is sealed. No warning lights, messages, or anything of the sort ever appeared until the check engine light came on.
Catastrophic engine failure due to piston pin bushings/connecting rod bushing failing. The engine was removed, disassembled, and inspected by an automotive machinist. There were no warning lamps or messages, only a knocking sound. The Toyota dealership said there was severe knocking from lower engine, and their remedy was a new engine.
According to the car’s manual and Toyota’s official website, the fuel tank capacity should be 13 gallons. However, my car does not have this capacity. Additionally, it consumes enough fuel for 36 miles when driving only 22 miles.
