I purchased a 2008 Toyota Camry almost two years ago with 100,000 thousand miles. The car was running great until now, it has 120,000 miles now and is starting to burn a lot of oil between oil changes, it burns about one quart every 800 to 1000 miles.

40 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/25/2019

The engine of my car has been burning through oil so fast. The engine check light is on so I took it to the auto shop to get it checked out and the employee there told me to contact Toyota since there was a recall on the 2009 Camry engine. I called Toyota place in garden grove and the person I spoke to said that they are unable to help me since recall has been expired and to call headquarters. However, I informed her that I never got a notice from Toyota about this recall. I also informed her that I took my Camry 2009 into the dealership in January 2018 to get the dashboard replaced from another recall but no one informed me about the engine recall during that time either. Toyota had failed to notify me twice. Toyota failed to send me a notice about the engine recall and they again failed to notify me when I brought in my car to get the dashboard fixed. So I contacted headquarters and the person on the other line told me the same thing that they can't help me since the time to bring in my car had expired and that I would have to pay for the fix out of pocket. I wish they would do a thorough job of reaching out to their consumers regarding the safety of their cars.

41 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

There is an oil consumption issue and Toyota is saying it is an extended warranty issue, that has expired and that I am going to have to fix it and pay for it all out of pocket. This should be a recall not a waranty issue. It's not fair or right and they should stand behind their production issues that are flawed. This is a saftey issue because the light doesn't even come on when it is low, so if I don't check often then I am in danger when I am driving. I bought the car to drive, not to become a mechanic.

42 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Original owner of 2009 Camry with 84k miles burned through so much oil between oil changes that the engine was over 3 qts low, restored oil level did not eliminate noises assessed to be rod slap due to excessive wear. I now expect the engine to die at any time with thrown rod.

43 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 02/01/2019

The engine has high oil and fuel consumption. The consumption of oil is two quarts a month.

44 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/31/2019

While driving, I had to make an emergency stop. After stopping quick, the engine oil light turned on for about 5 seconds. I checked the oil and found it to be 2. 5 quarts low. My last oil change was less than 2500 miles ago. Excessive engine oil consumption is causing a low oil light and possible engine failure. This is a known problem and updated parts are available, but due to my vehicle being over 10 years old, the manufacturer will not honor the warranty extension for this problem.

45 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/22/2019

Bought a used 09 Camry. Everything seemed fine until 2 months after driving the car we noticed it was burning through oil, 2. 5+ qts per 1000 miles. Did an oil consumption test and failed only to be told that they couldn't do anything because it's out of warranty (past the 10 yr mark). I don't understand why they'd even perform the oil consumption test knowing they couldn't help if it indeed failed because although it was out of warranty they explained that the oil consumption test is "warranty protocol" before any repairs are made. . . I called the headquarters office and spoke to 2 reps who both documented my issue and said, "we'll forward your complaint to our manager and create a case. . . I honestly believe we should take care of this", only to hear back from the manager who lead me on during the call by saying, "it's our job here at Toyota to service customers in need. I'm familiar with your situation after reading your case notes. You did nothing wrong and weren't negligent. Let me see what I can do to help you". Then literally the next sentence the guy said, "I'm sorry, we can't help you". I asked him why he said he was going to help me, knowing the details of the case which explained that I wanted to have this oil consumption issue fixed. He literally said, "I was familiar with the resolution you were searching for and I knew you were out of warranty for this particular issue. But because it's a unique situation and I can make things happen on my end, I decided to offer assistance". Yet he did nothing. Now I'm out $5500.

46 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

Excessive oil consumption. Takes about 1-2 quarts every 1000 miles, otherwise I run out of oil and it starts to smell like oil when I drive or when car is running. I was headed on a trip today when my car started to drive a little funny and it started to smell like oil again. I was able to pull off to the side of the road and check it and I was low on oil. I put more oil in the car and headed back on my trip. I had the cruise control set and all of a sudden the cruise kicked off and jolted the car while I was driving 70mph. After that it was hard to get my car to shift above the 3rd rpm. Car still has less than 150,000 on it. This problem has been going on for a few thousand miles. It has no oil leaks. There are no lights that go off, has had regular and scheduled maintenance with records.

47 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2009 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

All engine services were done always in Toyota's center, now car is 154329 km(95,895miles) and I started to check oil by myself in the last year and I noticed excessive motor oil consumption. Actually I need to add 1qt oil every 3 weeks (1 qt every 350 miles aproximately). The motor is not dripping the oil on the floor, so it must be going somewhere.

48 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

Burns too much oil. Friends with Camrys and scions both have complained about same issue. I barely make it to 2000 mile mark and have to add oil. Even different dealerships have told me that these engines are known to burn through too much oil. If they know this and it's a problem for many then it should be fixed.

50 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

I purchased a Camry from bob howard in 2007. The car started consuming an excessive amount of oil not long after the Toyota enhancement program launched in 2014. I did not get a notice from Toyota. Bob howard informed me of the need to run the oil consumption test in July 2015; which we did. I was told the test "passed" even though it was obvious that the car was burning a lot of oil. The oil pressure light kept coming on over & over again. I requested a 2nd test in Dec 2015 and I was told again that the car "passed" the oil consumption test. For 3 years I complained to bob howard about the situation, including the car choking when I try to accelerate or brake; oil pressure light; engine light; having to add oil to my car upon driving it for about 1000 miles or so, etc. . This all happened from 2015-2018. In 2018, bob howard tried to tell me that my car is leaking oil instead of burning oil. This wasn't an accurate statement. So, I went to a trusted independent mechanic who took a detail look at my car and confirmed that my car is not leaking oil at all. I went back to bob howard & demanded a 3rd oil consumption test. After much arguing they agreed to it. We did the test and it failed in Dec 2018. This confirmed what I knew all along. Yet they refused to fix the problem to the point where the service manager wayne simon refused to take my calls. They tell me the warranty has expired, which is very fitting for them &Toyota. I called Toyota inc. Who also refused to do anything because the warranty expired in 2016. My car is barely at 105,000 miles which is below the Toyota extended warranty limit of 150,000 miles or 10 yrs. The fact that I have complained about the issue while it was under warranty & was mislead the whole time did not count for anything. Obviously, this oil consumption issue poses a serious threat to the engine & to car owners. Repairs are a must.

60 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/16/2018

Excessive oil usage. Car at 4 years old and less than 40k miles was reported to the dealer as using 1q of oil every 1500 miles. At 60k it was using 1q every 1000 miles. All the times this was reported to the dealer I was told this is normal oil consumption, now at 100k it is using 1q every 300 miles and I am being told I need new rings. I believe the 02 Camry is experiencing the exact same thing the later models were recalled for and Toyota was hiding the fact this is a problem with their 4 cyl models. This will eventually become a smog emissions issue with the oil usage. Contacted the 1-800 Toyota number and they said it isn't under a campaign and wont do anything about it.

63 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 08/25/2018

My engine is burning oil at a fast rate. I have to add 2-3 quarts of oil between oil changes in order to keep the correct oil level. It has just over 100,000 miles so it is out of the 60k mike powertrain warranty. This wasn't a problem for my car until around 90k miles. So it was already out of the warranty range when I discovered something was wrong. This is a faulty design by Toyota and the car should be recalled and fixed at no cost to the consumer. Their brand is built on reliability and that's what I thought I was getting when I purchased this car. I was deceived by Toyota.

66 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2010 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

Initially, I thought I may have been imagining things but over this summer I noticed that my car was burning oil so fast, that I needed an oil change every 1000 miles. Recently, I got my oil changed at the end of August 2018, used ow-20 full synthetic and two weeks later, the oil had burned out. Last week on 9/13/18, I put 4 quarts in and today I checked my dipstick and it nearly dry. I am afraid that this matter will only continue to get worse. I don't understand how Toyota wouldn't recall vehicles that are a safety danger.

67 Engine Burning Oil problem of the 2006 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/26/2018

I have properly maintained my vehicle since I purchased it. Tuesday I headed to work and the oil light came on. I pulled over to the gas station to check it. I had no oil in my car. I just had an oil change less than two weeks prior. I the proceeded to put three quarts in my car. The oil light went out. I took it back to texas oil later that day and told them what happened. They checked it and told me the oil was full for the moment. I was told to come back and have it check the following day. I couldn't get there on weds, I went Thursday. The car was low two quarts of oil. They checked the car both times for an oil leak. No leak. The next day I took it to my mechanic at firestone and he checked the oil, filled it up and told me to come back the next day and he would check it out really good. I went today and I had almost no oil. One quart. He checked the car. No oil leaks. He said the car looked really good for its age. There were no leaks and no explanation for the oil consumption. He told me it needed an engine. I was also told there was a possibility the engine could just shut down on me. That scared me. I work in home health. I drive my car to client's homes. I am afraid of a fire or something worse happening while I am driving.
