2001-Toyota Camry: there is a burning odor when car is operating. The ignition does not always start the car upon inserting and turning the key. Many times when turning the key, there is a high screeching loud noise and the car remains non-operational for a few minutes which occurs everyday. After the car is running for approximately 20-minutes down the road, there is a burning smell similar to burning rubber. The inside of the car near the floor on driver side and passenger side will become warm. It appears heat is generated from the engine into the inside of the car thus resulting in burning odor. Upon acceleration, the car has a jerky, propelling motion forward. Steering column has some stiffness and at other times it has lot of play with turns. The power/electric windows, clock, and cd/radio player do not work properly. These defects/faults occurred approximately 6 months after used vehicle was purchased. As vehicle was sold as is, I did not return to the dealership for repairs. Car was taken to local mechanic and found nothing wrong. With the exception of the daily ignition/start problem, other problems described above, happen approximately five times a month. Regular scheduled service maintenance are performed however all above problems continue to concern me.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Camry. The contact stated the vehicle was at the dealer for an unrelated repair. When she received the vehicle back, there was an unusual grinding noise from the exhaust system. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where she was informed that the vehicle could not be repaired. The failure persisted. Updated 07/30/10. Updated 09/30/10
the consumer stated he would like for someone to respond to her complaint. Updated evoq 10/13/jb.

During a 60,000 mile check-up at my service station, it was discovered that I needed a new "flex pipe assembly" (manifold exhaust pipe and catalytic converter combined). The mechanic said that he has seen the same problem on many 2002 Toyota Camry le's. The part alone cost me $900 and $100 in labor to install. Toyota told me that this part is not on recall list. I approved the replacement by my mechanic who told me that I should file a complaint.

A problem with white smoke coming from exhaust when starting the car for the first time each day. Burns off quickly but should not be doing this at all. Dealer says the problem may be a valve lifter, but that this car is too new for that. Car has 80,000 miles on it. Concerned about smoke and fire or emissions problem. This car is rated for CA emissions and was made in japan.

I bought a new 2005 Toyota Camry se 3. 3 5 speed auto. It has a hesitation when accelerating from a slow down. When trying to merge it is very unnerving. The check engine light came on the first 3000 miles and a air/fuel sensor was replaced. The hesitation is still not predictable and still occurs. A sulfur smell sometimes occurs also.

Egr valve broken and vacuum switching valve not working. Engine dies (sometimes totally dies and sometimes dies and starts after a moment) after taking exit from highways and sometimes on highways at 65 m/hr. Steering gets locked (cannot turn) because engine dies out. Fortunately didn't involve in major accidents because of this. However there were minor accidents with no damage to any property including my vehicle. Problem resolved after replacing egr & vsv assemblies. Very fortunate I didn't involve in any serious accidents as several times my vehicle stopped all of a sudden on highways at around 60 m/hr.
My engine valves need to be replaced, my oil and transmission is leaking, and I have blue exhaust coming from my tailpipe.

Car emits an strong odor of rotten eggs (sulfur dioxide) through the interior vent system. This condition is documented in Toyota TSB eg003-03 dated 2/24/03. Although they acknowledge the condition, they say it is the fault of the gasoline. I have tried many different brands and my neighbors cars do not exhibit this smell. Sulfur dioxide is especially dangerous to people with respiratory conditions such as my daughter who has asthma. Her condition has become worse this winter because (we think) of her contact with this car. Toyota has said that the condition is not covered in their warranty and they refuse to fix it.
I am experiencing a white smoke upon start up of vehicle, only in the morning coming out of the exaust pipe. I only have 79,000 miles on vehicle.
My engine seized and needs complete replacement due to this oil sludge problem. As a result of the gelled oil, one of the pistons broke off creating a hole in the engine and the motor mount became displaced from the engine, causing the engine block to crack while I was driving the car. I bought the car used from greer Toyota in millbrook, NY in August of 2001 and was told that one of their mechanics would complete a thorough inspection before the car was turned over to me. I have since had the oil changed every 3,000 miles by a trusted mechanic. During that time, I had to replace the oxygen sensor at my own cost, but did not have any other problems until this month. Now in addition to the engine, it appears that my struts are failing as well. I am in the process of submitting a claim for the engine.
The exhaust system on my 03 Camry hangs down. It is 4 inches off the ground. I have tried to get Toyota to fix it but they say it's the design intent. I'm afraid that if the car bottoms out the system will fly off the car. I watch two people die because a muffler flew off a vehicle and wedged itself into the gas tank of a truck. It caught the highway on fire and killed the guys in the truck. The system is not installed on the car correctly. There is a bracket that is not hooked up and the system does not tuck into the exhaust channel. All the Camry and other models on this frame are like this. Please help.
The entire muffler had turned black. Consumer lost control of vehicle and jumped out before car went over an embankment. Doctor diagnosed consumer with carbon monoxide poisoning. Ph.
Engine was running fine but was taking it in for 60k mile service. Toyota dealership informed me of a bad oil sludge problem and estimated the repairs to be $4500. I took it to another mechanic and he said that there was a chance the engine has not been damaged, but only a chance. I let him perform the work of cleaning the oil pan and running a couple of oil changes to clean the sludge. The engine seemed to be running fine, but now (January 2003) I am getting a lot of smoke from the exhaust and they tell me that something must have been damaged but they can't tell without taking the engine apart.

While traveling on indian head highway, consumer swerved to avoid a deer, instead swerved to the right/lost control and hit a guard rail. Upon impact, front air bags failed to deploy, driver suffered injuries, and vehicle was demolished. In addition, there was a sulfur-like or rotton egg odor coming from exhaust system. Also, brought vehicle to dealer for following problems: poor alignment/engine check light/fuel injector/ spark plugs, mirrors, and structural defects.
Every since the purchase of my new Camry, the car has emitted a sulfur/rotten egg smell. The smell comes from the rear passenger side of the car and, when the defroster is on, it sucks the terrible smell right into the interior of the vehicle. (note to NHTSA: you have several complaints already listed about this problem under both "catalytic converter," "exhaust system," and "defroster". . . They are all the same thing. ) I have taken the car to the dealership on several occasions. They have told 1) that it is the catalytic converter, 2) that it happens in about 70 of every 3,000+ cars produced, 3) that I should try a new gasoline and 4) that it will go away at around 6,000 miles. I have tried several new gasolines and am currently at 5,000 miles with no change to the smell. I will take my car into the shop two more times for the same complaint and then will attempt to invoke the lemon law in oregon.
While starting the vehicle, blue smoke was coming from the exhaust pipe. The dealership is aware of the problem. The consumer stated that the dealer said that it was an engine sludge problem. There is a recall on 1997-2001 2. 2 cyl engines, which can cause the engine to seize up during operation. The engine is prone to dangerous levels of gasoline contamination dilution. The consumer feels that this vehicle should be covered even though its a 1996, because it has the same engine.
Car produces a horrible rotten egg smell while sitting in traffic. Dt.
A strange odor was coming into cab of vehicle. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer stated it was carbon monoxide. Consumer stated that sunroof was vacuuming fumes back into vehicle. Please provide any further information.
Large amounts of CO are entering inside the car, my wife has passed out over a dozen times while driving the car. We used a CO detector and it registerd over 999ppm. I fear that this may be a problem that goes undetected. My wife had an eeg, ekg and an electro cardiogram performed, all tests came back normal. We found it interesting that she would only pass out while driving the Camry and this is what pushed us to test the CO levels. I thank you in advance for your assistance and hope that this may help others that might be experiencing the same symptoms with this car or other cars. No safety defects mentioned.
There is a very strong rotten egg/sulpher odor emitted from the exhaust whether the vehicle is driven a short or long distance. I was told by the dealer that the odor was caused by high sulpher content in the gasoline that I was putting in the car and that I should try different brands of gasoline to see which one caused the least odor. I have tried 3 different brands and the odor is still the same. I have talked to the dealer twice about the problem and was told that there was nothing that they could do about it since it was the gasoline that is causing the problem. I strongly believe there is a problem with theh engine or the exhaust system and that either the dealer/manufacturer does not know how to fix the problem or refuses to admit that there is a problem.
Consumer states while driving occasionally white smoke exits the exhaust. Consumer states dealer has been contacted. Please provide any further information. Mr.
Consumer states after starting vehicle a lot of smoke come out from the exhaust.
Exhaust system is designed too close to ground and may causes a potential fire, making contact with debris. Dealer and manfucturer were notified.
Consumer stated heat shield rattles, dealer replaced.
I bought this car as a used "programed car" in February, 2000. It has approximately 35,000 miles on it. It has driven just fine up until February 24, 2002. It all of a sudden started to have clear liquid like smoke emit from the rear exhaust pipe. I had just filled the car up with gas. I was able to get the car to my mechanic the next day. My mechanic told me that I had a "blown head gasket". This is very, very unusual for Toyotas. I have owned Toyotas for over 16 years now, and have never had this type of a problem in a new car. After my mechanic has the opportunity to go over the car, he confirmed that it was indeed the "head gasket". I asked him what would cause a "head gasket" to go out on a fairly new Toyota? I have always been very prompt with my general upkeep on my cars, regular oil changes, tire rotations, and other necessary filter changes. My mechanic said, it's a good posibility that the head gasket could have been defective. He asked me to check with someone to see if there has been a recall on any 1999 Toyota camarys. Is this the type of information that I can get from you, or do I need to contact the corporate headquarters for Toyota? please call or e-mail me you response as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence.
While operating my vehicle on a highway, I was startled when an object suddenly fell/dropped onto my ankle/foot from under the vehicle's dash. This incident almost caused me to lose control of the vehicle. When I took the vehicle back to the selling dealership, I was informed that object which fell off was the "driver's side air flow duct. " further informed that piece fell off because a clip(s) was either not installed during assembly or, clip fell off during operation of vehicle prior to my incident. Note: still awaiting for special order part (clip) to arrive at dealership.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
There was a hole located in the front of the engine block in which oil sprayed onto the exhaust causing a fire. (claim#32-v387-711).

Whenever someone gets inside of vehicle, may expierence dizziness/ nausia, headache, and chest pain. Consumer took the vehicle back four times for the same problem and the dealer could not identify the problem.
Excessive amounts of smoke was coming from rear of vehicle. Consumer took vehicle to a dealership that determined that an o-ring was allowing oil to leak from engine, which was burning up on engine/exhaust system. Please provide any additional information.
Consumer stated while driving, there was a rattle sound coming from under the vehicle, the dealer adjusted the exhaust heat shields, consumer also complained of an odor coming from the catalytic converter, however dealer could not duplicate consumers concern.
Driving from home when engine check light came on. Car was purchased at 29500 and charcoal canister needed replacing with only 35000.
