While driving, on braking, the vehicle started making a grinding/rubbing noise appearing to come from the front passenger side of the vehicle. The noise seemed as if the vehicle engine/motor was going to seize up or something would break inside. Slowly took it to a local tire kingdom repair shop who would not do anything once they started the vehicle and were alarmed by the engine noise. Advised to take it to an engine repair shop. Slowly, cautiously drove home and parked. On starting the vehicle in the garage, next day, the engine seems to run fine on parked and neutral. On shifting to drive or reverse the rubbing/grinding noise begins again. Have been restrained to sitting at home instead of doing my ride sharing and delivery work. Recently had the timing chain and cam shaft gear replaced.

Car cannot seem to determine which gear it should be in. When in stop and go traffic on freeway and pedal is not depressed, car lurches forward and a clunk is heard as the vehicle downshifts. Clunking sound is made worse in cold, humid, or cloudy weather. In the streets, when turning a corner and hitting the gas, there is a noticeable lag (about 2 seconds) until the car jerks forward and increases speed. If you want to pass someone you need to be very careful because the car can suddenly lurch forward and a higher speed than intended, or not accelerate at all. When car automatically brakes for you to avoid a collision, a loud rattling noise is heard and felt throughout cabin when depressing pedal, with most of the noise concentrated in the area under the hood of car.

I was drove the car for shopping 25 miles away from home at 9:00 am. At 11:50 am, on the way back, the back shook slightly and made small noises that were unfamiliar. I checked to see if the shift gear was set correctly and windows were closed, which they were. There was no unusual blinking of driver panel light indicating any type of warning. When I arrived at the drive way at 12:30pm, turning into the front of the house as usual, the car suddenly accelerated and my car ran into the garage door and side of the house.

Have a 2011 Camry 4cy with 6sp at. The car transmission shifts rough and car rpm suddenly goes around 3k in stop a go driving. While coming to stop the car release the gear at very late while almost stopped. Feels like it will jerk and hit other car. On cold start the car transmission does not like to move(unless you warm up the engine which takes 15min idling. Then I am not sure how this care pass epe pollution standard ). So while getting into road the car needs high revving to move. Took it to the dealer and they say its behaving normal and could not reproduce the problem. Took to another dealer and they give the same "normal" answer. Filed a complain to Toyota. Their explanation is field technician (Toyota dealer) said its normal and no issue so its normal. As a owner of such vehicle I personally think the transmission behave abnormal and unsafe. Also the car has a whining noise most noticeable around 2-2. 5k rpm. 1 st dealer said all Camry of this model makes such noise. 2nd dealer said its from the transmission. Nhtsa should investigate and make sure Toyota is not trying to avoid any potential defect which will cause a life threatening accident.

Clicking when in reverse and appling brakes shifting brake pads ? coming to stop car seems to shift to neutral ( better gas mileage) ? going up hill 70 t0 75 mph in cruise control car will down shift 1 or 2 gears this is the way the car programed . On all issues Toyota claims their is nothing they can do as the car is operating according to specs . They tell me the car is safe I have concerns as to how . Why is their a noise in the brakes ? why is the car down shifting they say their is a disclaimer not to use cruise in mountains . They seem to have a problems they can`t fix.
Experienced a coarse shifting of transmission during upshift and downshift especially around 20 mph and between 35-37mph. On more than once occasion I have experienced a loud thump noise coming from the transmission as the car is slowing down and is in process of downshifting around 20mph. Other times similar behavior has occurred at speeds of 35-37mph.
The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Camry. The contact was told by Toyota that the vehicle needed a new transmission in January of 2009, but they were not told why. A rebuilt transmission was installed and now the contact was advised that the trans axle failed. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was told that the failure occurred because of the gear shift box, which caused the transmission to slip and make a banging noise while driving approximately 20 mph. The original transmission failed at 70,000 miles. The manufacturer stated that the warranty expired; however, the extended warranty was valid up to 75,000 miles. The contact stated that the failure was a manufacturers defect. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 90,000. Updated 03/15/lj.

2009 Toyota Camry. Consumer writes regarding vehicle stalling in the acceleration process the dealer stated the stall in the acceleration, was caused by the sequencing of the transmission. The stall would occur as the consumer made a rapid change from deceleration to acceleration. The consumer was informed the stall was a built in design feature. The consumer stated to minimize the stall, she must manually down shift the transmission whenever the engine is in the deceleration phase. Recently, a slow moving 18 wheeler unexpectedly pulled into the consumers lane of traffic, while traveling at highway speeds. The consumer stated her natural reaction was to remove her foot from the accelerator, putting the engine /transmission into deceleration mode. As the situation unfolded, she concluded that the rapid acceleration and lane change was the safest method. When the consumer tried to accelerate around the truck, there was no reaction from the vehicle. The transmission delayed responding and when it did respond, it chose a gear which produced no meaningful forward motion, but lots of noise. Consequently, she was forced to brake very hard, but the brakes failed to perform as designed. The next day, the dealer explained there was a factory alert issue on the brake pads. The pads were replaced, and the rotors were turned.
2007 Toyota Camry concern
the consumer experienced a high noise level while driving the vehicle. The noise level inside the vehicle increased over time and the consumer stated he was unable to communicate with the front passenger without raising the sound conversation. The consumer also experienced stalling while driving. At times the vehicle would not move when the accelerator was applied. On occasion, the vehicle would jerk and then hesitate. The consumer stated while driving, when he removed his foot from the accelerator, the transmission would shift to neutral, he would have to turn the vehicle off, and the re-start it. In November 2009 while the consumers wife was driving, the vehicle suddenly stalled on the freeway. The vehicle was taken to the dealership and upon inspection, the consumer was informed the vehicle needed a new transmission. The transmission was eventually replaced, however the consumer stated he continues to experience problems with respect to the acceleration and deceleration. The vehicle continues to jerk and hesitate upon applying the accelerator pedal.

07 Toyota Camry--transmission failures and wind like noise at all times on the driver's side window. The consumer stated there is a transmission failure when shifting from reverse to drive with a 3-5 second pause before drive engages and a sudden lunge. Updated 09/25/07.
Recently I brought my 04 Camry to my dealer because of sulfur smell and rattle at light acceleration. The dealer verified the problems and replaced the converter and intake manifold according to the tsbs. They said they also had to re-program the ecm. Then after I picked up the car, I found everything is harder: the acceleration, steering, and braking. I found it is hard to maintain a speed whether on local or highway. On may 28,2005, while I drove the car on highway with 4 persons sitting in the car (including me), I found the steering was very hard and felted like it was locked, and I found it is very hard to accelerate to hwy speed and hard to maintain it. I brought the car to the dealer again on may 31. After having a technician test drove it, they told me it was similar to other Camrys (normal) and wouldn't want to solve my problem. I believe they never tried to reproduce my problem (by having more people sitting in the car). I think this problem is a safty issue so I file complaint with NHTSA. I also feel the car doesn't shift right and engine is noiser after the convert/intake change and re-programming.

When the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, at a faster engine speed of about 2,800 to 3,000 rpm, there is a rough spot or rough noise. When the transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear at lower engine speeds a noise is not noticeable. For a long time I thought the noise was from rough spots in the roadway, but the noise kept occurring on smooth pavement. There is a definite defect in the transmission.
2003 Toyota Camry v6 le transmission replaced at only 4000 miles. Continued problems with transmission, engine. Faulty, delayed shifting, engine noise/resonance, lack of acceleration from a stop or to pass. Idle is noisy into the cabin. Vehicle continues to exhibit transmission and engine problems. Car has a reputation for smoot, compliant ride. Have taken vehicle to dealer on numerous occasions. Problems persist depsite dealer insistence that the problems are normal.
At a constant cruising speed, the automatic transmission abruptly jerks (presumably shifts) when accelerator pedal is released slightly. A clunking noise can also be heard at this time. The abs actuator also had to be replaced earlier as it was producing a clunking noise after the engine was started and the steering wheel was turned sharply at low speeds.
