1 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2018 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/05/2018

I had just exited a freeway, and was entering the surface streets via a stoplight. After turning onto the surface street, the signal ahead turned red. I attempted to apply the brakes in traffic while traveling at or less than 20 m. P. H. , but the brakes did not respond as normal. I pushed the brake pedal down and the vehicle did not stop as normal. Instead, the pedal depressed further than normal, and I felt a heavy vibration feedback through the pedal. I was approximately 2-3 car lengths from the car in front of me, and I pumped the brakes and depressed the pedal as far as I could physically manage. At that point, the vehicle began to slow, but so gradually that I was certain to collide with the car in front of me. I then steered to the right (I was in the rightmost lane) toward the curb of the sidewalk. The front passenger wheel went up on the curb and the vehicle stopped. I put on the hazard signal, then when traffic cleared behind me, pulled into a gas station approximately 40 feet in front of me. When I steered back onto the roadway after initially stopping, the steering felt very loose, and I felt as though I was driving on ice or without control over the steering. Once in the gas station parking lot, I put the car in park, and turned off the engine. I examined the pedals for blockage and looked for fluid leaks, but found nothing. I started the vehicle and tested the gas and brakes in the empty parking area, and everything responded as normal. However, the front passenger tire has a tear in the sidewall and the rim is lightly damaged.

2 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/20/2017

Was informed that my power steering column was leaking and the steering devices could lose its restraints at any given time. This could lead to car losing complete steering causing a severe crash and potentially death to its occupants. With the recent recall for Nissan vehicles regarding power steering fluid leaks, there is a concern that the leaks may cause fire to my vehicle. When asked about the problem to the Toyota service technician, he stated that over time the power steering system may "rust" and need repairs. I asked about how often does this or has this issued occurred for Toyota brand cars or trucks? no data was provided. I went on to press for additional information, but the service technician did not provide additional details regarding this issue with my 2004 Toyota Camry. Since getting the news about my car, I have noticed when driving on the highway or city streets my car quickly shifts steering toward the right at varous speeds into the next lane. I try to maintain control by staying in the far right lane on highways and city streets to avoid crashing into other cars.

3 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

When I brought in my 2007 Toyota Camry solara convertible for a faulty low tire pressure sensor, another problem was detected. I asked to see the issue while the car was up on the lift. I could observe what looked like a shredding/damaged rack and pinion power steering boot with fluid visible. The first dealer written estimate says "replace power steering rack and pinion (found power steering fluid leaking into boot of rack and pinion)" for $1354. 88, plus 4-wheel alignment for $160. 95. The second dealership service department recommended replacing one rack and pinion boot and that power steering fluid gasket, for $594. 58 plus a $99 alignment, which I did. The dealer checked and there has not yet been a recall for this issue, but I checked online and there are multiple complaints for the same/similar issue. I am very concerned about the safety of my power steering system, whether the other gasket will leak or the system fail while driving.

4 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

As many others have realized with their Camrys, mine too has a problem with the rack and pinion. It is leaking fluid from the rack and pinion boots, as well as the steering pump. I am now faced with a $1600 repair bill. Design errors occur, as an engineer I understand this. But the problem is Toyota will not stand behind their products and admit to the error. This is my first Toyota. I had heard how reliable they were. I am not so sure now. I am currently shopping for a new car, and I have scratched Toyotas off of my list. I can not give business to a company that treats clients this way.

5 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2005 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 07/23/2013

At inspection, the power steering unit was leaking and was very low on fluid. This seems to be a known problem, but both Toyota and the dealer claim there has never been a recall? yet I found on the net that there was a recall. As usual Toyota is trying to get out of fixing a known problem until someone is killed!.

7 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2004 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Toyota Camry. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the steering wheel began moving from left to right independently. The contact decelerated to move to the shoulder as the failure persisted. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where they advised her that there was as steering fluid leakage due to the steering pump being fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 25,000. The VIN was not available.

8 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2002 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 03/25/2011

Steering wheel became difficult to turn and did not return to center when released. Check power steering fluid it was ok. No power steering leaks. Took car to have problem evaluated. Mechanic said that steering shaft universal joints were worn and rusted and binding up. Only solution was to replace entire steering column. He has seen this problem before. If allowed to go too long steering could lock up completely or shaft could shear causing loss of control. Repair will cost $900 since entire shaft must be replaced and part is only available from Toyota. I have never had this kind of problem with a vehicle and was shocked to know the design of the steering shaft left it exposed to road spray and subsequent corrosion damage. This is a serious safety issue and gave no warning as to the impending failure. Steering wheel became very difficult to turn even with the power steering assist.

9 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2000 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

This item is not a total failure yet but is headed in that direction. The power steering hose is leaking fluid where it joins the rack and pinion steering assembly. When the fluid all leaks out I will have no power assist in my steering and it could come at any moment. My local Toyota dealer ( del Toyota in thorndale, PA) reported this problem to me while this car was being serviced for an oil change. I have not had it repaired yet. A neighbor of mine told me that he experienced the same problem with his Toyota avalon which was a couple of years older than my car. I am reporting this problem because maybe Toyotas in my age region are also experiencing this same problem and Toyota is not admitting to a component weakness in the power steering area and might eventually agree to fix it. I have noticed recalls of cars up to around 10-15 years old where the problems manifest themselves over extended time periods.

10 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2006 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 11/13/2009

I noticed my steering wheel was not responding as normal and was making noises. Power steering pump for my 2006 Toyota solara was leaking fluid and needed to be replaced between 58 - 59 k miles. I strictly follow the maintenance schedule for the car and my car is always serviced by the dealership that I purchased the vehicle from.

11 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2007 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 10/22/2009

As soon as I pulled out of my driveway, I heard something snap in my 2007 Toyota Camry and all the power steering fluid leaked out onto the street in front of my house. The car was towed to a local auto repair shop and they replaced the rack and pinion steering.

12 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2008 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

I own a 2008 Toyota Camry and have had a few serious problems that were never recognized by the Toyota dealer which I always serviced the car. They range from small to serious. Front struts seem to be leaking hydraulic fluid, I also complained about a steering problem to the dealer, they inspected the car and told me they found nothing wrong. The steering issue was very apparent, and now has gotten worse. When cornering at low or higher speeds the car seems to skip, and controlling the car gets much more difficult, which becomes a serious safety issue for me. There where service bulletins available for these issues but yet my car was never repaired. Another issue I have noticed has been with braking, the car will vibrate dramatically once brakes are applied. The brakes have been replaced and rotors have been cut 5 months ago. The car has new tires and has been aligned in the past 6 months as requested by the Toyota dealer, yet the steering problems persist. I feel very unsafe driving this car, in back of my mind I feel like something serious might happen every time I get in this car and drive it. I have no confidence driving this car.

13 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Toyota Camry

Failure Date: 09/30/2007

I have a Toyota Camry 2003. Since around 2007 I have noticed that some kind of fluid noise come from the steering wheel area, especially in the morning and when turning to the right or left. Sometimes the noise is so loud that the other passenger can hear it. It sound like a lot of fluid is moving on the dash around the steering wheel. No leak inside the car observed. For several months feel like car steer more/easily when driving.
