I was driving on a city street at about 35mph when rough, somewhat grinding noises came from under the right side of the car hood of the 2005 Toyota Camry. These noises continued for about 15 minutes while I was driving. I stopped at a red light. When I had the right-of-way and attempted to proceed, I found I could not turn the steering wheel. I thought the car was inoperable but when I exerted great effort, the wheel did turn. Fortunately, I was able to turn a corner and move into a public parking lot. Again with great steering difficulty and noise from below the car hood, I drove the car about a quarter of a mile to my home and the car was towed to a service center.
Please add me to other Camry owners complaining about steering noise, either at rest or driving at any speed, steering to the left or right: clicking sound happens as the steering wheel is turned. The noise is getting louder. Now I have lost the horn, cruise control and the air bag light is on. So, it seems that this problem is affecting some kind of switch in the middle of the steering column! I have checked the fuses which are all fine! reading all the complaints and realizing that Toyota is not owning to the problem with the owners having to pay for the repair, I am truly disappointed. It definitely is a design problem!.
A consistent grinding/knocking/clunking sound started coming from the steering wheel while steering at low speeds (0-30 mph). Also, the steering wheel felt looser than normal at all speeds (0-65mph). The service adviser at the dealership informed me that this was a common issue with a 2005 Toyota Camry, and that the intermediate steering shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, since the vehicle was out of warranty, I had to cover the ~$660 cost. A google search reveals several similar issues with other late model Camrys. Toyota has a TSB t-sb-0296-08 to "grease" the steering shaft for the noise. However, both the dealership, as well as a google search revealed that the grease fix would be temporary, and does not last. The dealership also informed me that the newer replacement steering shafts are better designed, are completely sealed, and cannot be greased. Since a TSB is out, it looks like Toyota is aware of this safety issue. However, no recall has been made.
I have steering noise issue from the day I purchased this vehicle in 2004. I have taken my vehicle to the dealership so many times to report this to the dealer and get it fixed but dealer has not fixed this issue. After the warranty on this vehicle is over when I took it back to the dealer and reported this again dealer wants to replace parts with the cost of 2000 dollars to fix it. I was not aware of this website before otherwise I would have submitted my complaint earlier but still want to report to the NHTSA to record this for future. I did some research on this issue and found out apparently all the 2003-2004 Toyotas has this same issue but the company and the dealers tries to deny that.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that the steering wheel had become abnormally loose and a noise emitted from the steering column. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 69,800.
Knoking noise in the steering wheel that amplifies over time, car is a Toyota Camry se v6 2009 in great condition, feel now unsafe to drive as noise increases when turning wheel local Toyota dealer say intermediate shaft has to be replaced , asking $ 575 seems to me more as a defective part, but dealer says full cost of replacement has to be charged.
I am hearing a clunking sound every time I turn my steering wheel left or right. There are actually lots of clunking noises as I turn my steering wheel left or right.
The steering intermediate shaft on my 2009 Toyota Camry is worn out and has a lot of play in the steering along with a popping noise when turning the steering wheel from left to right at any speed. I began to notice the problem around 60,000 miles, I now have 80,000 miles and it has gotten much worse. On 11/09/12, I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed the steering intermediate shaft as the problem and advised they stocked the parts because of it being a common problem. On 11/14/12, Toyota released a voluntary recall for 2004-2009 Toyota prius models which involved the steering intermediate shaft. The recall describes the exact problem I am having with my Camry. The recall should be extended to the Camry model as well.
Recently, steering started making clunk, knocking sound which is loud. Toyota dealer diagnose noise from steering shaft , 55000 mile.
I just bought a used "06 Toyota Camry for my daughter to commute to college. We are experiencing steering wheel "clunking' and noises behind the steering column and under the car when we make turns and just driving. I took it to my mechanic who performed an inspection on the car. He said that this make and year of the Camry are notorious for this problem. True, I should have done more homework. I was gauging my decision on my previous ownership of a Camry I had in the 90's. I had no problems with that car. I just went to a website, carcomplaints. Com, and seen all the complaints about the same issues about this steering defect, some to the point of the steering wheel locking up while they were driving! over and over I seen these customers took the car back to the dealer or contacted Toyota directly and they were afforded no assistance. They were told they should have brought it back before 36, 000 miles, there was no problem that they could find, just real cowardly behavior from the people who could recall these vehicles and fix this persistant safety issue! I am still discovering all the complaints and issues with this steering problem but it seems to be nationwide so why are they not doing anything about this defect? does it have to turn into the same issue with their gas pedals sticking and nearly killing people before they take their heads out of the sand and take responsibility for their poor craftmanship? theyhave just lost me as a future customer but their actions speak louder if they just do the right thing.

Hear and feel "clunking" or "knocking" noise when turning steering wheel left or right.
I hear and feel a clunk, pop or knock type of noise when turning the steering wheel left or right while driving slowly or backing out of garage or parking. I noticed that there are many complaints about the same problem but Toyota is not recalling for fixing the problem, instead dealers are charging to fix the problem.
There is a clunk, pop, or knock type noise when turning the steering wheel left or right. There is a TSB issued about this and Toyota refuses to fix it,said the warranty is off. The introduction, warranty information, parts information, and repair procedure sections have been updated to reflect removal, lubrication, and reinstallation of the steering intermediate shaft instead of replacement. Applicable warranty ¢ this repair is covered under the Toyota comprehensive warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle¿s in-service date. ¿¢ warranty application.
My 2003 Toyota Camry le with 37,451 miles is experiencing a loud popping noise in the steering mechanism and getting worse. Dealership advised needs intermediate steering shaft. Cost of repair $447. 89. Dealership states this is a common problem. This is a potentially dangerous safety defect. Was unable to get any satisfaction through the district or national customer service representatives.
When backing or driving and turning the steering wheel I hear a clicking or popping noise in the steering system. Looking on the internet it appears that Toyota will run up a bill doing repairs when they probably know what the problem is.
Noise in steering column and too much play in steering. Replaced intermediate steering column shaft. Major issue averted since my mechanic picked up on the issue. Significant automobile part, should not have failed. Toyota has a service bulletin but not a recall on this issue.
Knocking noise in steering when turning steering wheel, loud noise. Occurred every time turning steering wheel. Took to dealer and had to replace steering shaft assembly, part #45220-33270. Dealers invoice was for $503. 51 and after stating my case they charge me $233. 18 "goodwill adjustment" the old part has been discarded. The Camry had only 37,257 miles on it.
Clunking noise. Brought vehicle in for normal maintenance and diagnosis. Clunking noise was identified as steering shaft joint failure. (frightening prospect). Repair over $300. Mileage 82,000. That on top of early head gasket failure due to defective head gasket has me getting ready to get rid of this car.
Acceleration on my 2004 Toyota Camry began to fluctuate wildly while I was driving down the road. Car would suddenly accelerate, then decelerate almost non-stop. I shut engine off, called Toyota and had the car towed in. I was told that the engine control module (ecm) was defective and would be replaced under a federally mandated warranty - car had 76,000 miles, and warranty was good to 80,000 miles. However they also told me that the accelerator pedal assembly had simultaneously failed. That would cost me $681. Toyota's own technician said that the ecm failure caused the accelerator pedal assembly to fail. Toyota corporate, however, told me that the two incidents were unrelated. After reading about the "accelerator pedal sticking" problem in the news lately, I wonder if my problem is not part of a much larger problem involving the ecm on Toyotas cars. If I was not wise enough to shut off my engine when the problem occurred, a serious accident could easily have occurred. Please continue to investigate the ecm problem, as I believe that Toyota is not forthcoming with the full story here. The consumer also stated there weas an engine knock coming from the vehicle. The dealer repalced the tensioner, and belt. The water pump was wearing prematurely, there was a noise coming from the steering column when turning the wheel. The dealer replaced the intermediate steering shaft. The check engine light was on all the time. The dealer replaced the catalytic converter. The ecm and accelerator pedal were replaced. Steering column makes bad noises when it is turned. The noises continue and steering is rough.
The inner steering column shaft became detatched on my 2004 Toyota Camry 4 dr le sedan. It started making a noise and the complete steering column had to be replaced at a cost of $950. 00. Toyota would do nothing because they said the car had 60,000 miles on it and it was out of warranty. Also the rear struts wore out at about 30,000 miles.
I have a 2006 Camry le which has developed a clunking noise in the steering shaft or column somewhere below the steering wheel. Toyota has a service number on it, but will no do anything unless this detect was reported before 36,000 miles. They require you to find their detect it early and if you find it later after 36,000 miles they say that's too bad you are too late. This is just wrong !! they know they have a problem, yet they hope you pass 36,000 miles so they don't have to fix their known defect.
2004 Toyota Camry has excessive play in steering column and make noise when making a left or right turn. Dealer states that it is just a noise but would replace lower column at a cost of $463. 65. I believe that this is a potential safety issue in which the dealer/manufacturer is aware. This in my humble opinion should be a recall item paid for by Toyota. This is my fourth Toyota and I never had any issues like this beginning at 39,000. Noise was smaller and only noticed on left turns at first now much louder and occurs on left and right turns.
There is a clunking noise coming from the steering wheel when my car loaded with 4 people.
: the contact stated while driving various speeds when turning or hitting a bump, a noise was heard in the steering column and the wheel felt loose. The vehicle was driven to the dealer who replaced the intermediate shaft in the power steering. Updated 11/09/06.
