Toyota Camry owners have reported 10 problems related to transmission stuck in gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Camry based on all problems reported for the Camry.
Reaccelaration shock, transmission lag, especially upon re-acceleration from coasting or when trying to overtake someone on the highway, dangerous. Lugging and shift shock on downshifting and upshifting, feels like you get rear ended sometimes. When on a complete stop and step on the gas pedal the car feels like it's stuck in neutral and then it jerks into gear.

2018 Camry 8 speed automatic transmission has downshifting problems. This involves a delay in downshifting that I have found on 3 occasions could have been dangerous. Upon completing a turn and reapplying gas pedal the car appeared to be in neutral or stuck between gears. I had a dead gas pedal for 3 or 4 seconds. On 1 occasion I could have been involved in a rear end collision if the other driver hadn't realized something was wrong and swerved to avoid my car. I currently have lemon law complaint filed with the state attorney generals office involving this car and it's transmission.

While driving the vehicle either on a city street or highway or turning the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Nothing works, car wont start , key will not move, gear is stuck. This has happen three times within a year. The dealer has check it out but has no answer to why it happens. My air-condition fogs up the window, as so does the heater making the visibility difficult. There was also a strong odor of gas when you make a turn. All my complaints have been reported but nothing done. My fear is a major accident will be cause because of this.

After making a turn onto a road, before entering a parking lot, my brake lights went on. It's a new car with only 3500 miles on it - the brakes should be fine. I turn into the parking lot, park the car, put it in park, and turn off the engine. I check the emergency brake, it was not engaged. I turn the car on and the brake light goes away. However, now I cannot take my car out of park. It is stuck in park. I step on the brake, I turn the wheel and the wheel turns fine. The gear is still stuck in park. I call the dealership, they send out a tow truck. I try my car one more time and it is still stuck in park. The driver of the tow truck tries, he puts his hand on the handle and behold, it shifts out of park and can go into r, n and d. Can you believe it?? I will continue to monitor this 'odd' occurrence. Hopefully, this will not happen again.
The contact owns a 2002 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that the vehicle erratically shifts. While accelerating up an incline at 65 mph, the vehicle drives as if it is in neutral. When shifting from second to third gear, it feels stuck on second gear and then pops into third. The transmission was replaced in either November or December of 2007, but the failure has recurred. The vehicle has been with a mechanic for over a week, but they still cannot determine the cause of the failures. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 132,000.

Car hesitates during acceleration. Also gets stuck in certain gear at times, especially when going downhill. Car jerks a couple times a week when accelerating. Has been happening since the beginning. Dealers did tbs and no change. Say that it is not a problem and nothing they can do. Scared to let kids drive.

History: automatic transmission began flaring when cold after putting around 400 miles on the new car -- gear wouldn't "catch" and would skip gears; in shop for TSB to correct problem, but didn't correct it; in shop again to replace transmission since corporate claimed that would for sure correct flaring problem; additional problems resulting from new tranny including strange whooshing noise on driver side, jerkiness when changing gears, and hesitation when accelerating; back to shop to correct; shop was able to remove whooshing noise, but jerkiness remained and flaring continued albeit at different times than it did before. Failure and consequences: after stopping at a stop light, tried to make left-hand turn to join the interstate merge lane, but car would not supply enough power despite being in drive and pushing on the accelerator appropriately; barely made it across the intersection before having to pull over to shoulder to stop, put on hazard lights, and let other interstate traffic get by; theorizing that the transmission probably got stuck in whatever gear the car was in as I approached the stop light (3rd or 2nd) and then didn't appropriately downshift itself to get up to power coming from a complete stop at the stop light to cross the intersection; because the cars behind me were paying attention and roads free of ice and they saw that the car was not able to get up to speed, I was lucky not to be rear ended. What was done to correct failure: because it's been in the shop 5 times for bad transmission, not sure what they'll do to correct it -- that is pending. Will likely request buy back due to safety concerns and apparent inability to correct underlying transmission problems.
- the contact stated that was in reverse on the morning of 12/22/06 at 5 mph when the vehicle continued to go in reverse and wouldn't stop. While the vehicle was going in reverse there was a screeching noise coming from the vehicle. It hit a curb and to put the vehicle in park while it was still going in reverse to stop it. There were witnesses, and they told the contact that the vehicle was making a sound that the gears were stuck. The mechanic stated that the floor mat was pushed under the brakes. The contact insisted that couldn't be true because of the noise that was coming from the vehicle at the time it was going in reverse and could not be stopped.

I have a 2004 v6 Camry. The car has no clues as to which gear it is supposed to be in. Half of the time you can put your foot on the gas and it will go and half the time it will not. I have almost gotten hit several times changing lanes or pulling out due to the car being stuck in gears. The shifting between 2 and 3 will jerk your neck. It has been to the dealerships over four times and everytime I am told that this is a charteristic of the car. I went last week. . . The general manager told me he felt the jerks in the transmission and proceeded to call Toyota to find out how to fix it. 30 minutes later I was told that I am on my own with it. Another dealership told me Toyota has had them replacing 02 sensors and many other useless ideas trying to correct the problem. This issue is on every single complaint website (including this one) and I want to know if someone has to be killed before Toyota is made to correct their mistakes? the brakes are the second issue. . . They do not work!! they have been reported over and over and nothing has been done. I have came within inches of hitting the car in front of me several times due to the brakes being smashed all the way to the floor and the car just not stopping.
Gear shift stuck in park, repairs were made.
