40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/09/2024

There was a maintenance required notice on my dashboard and I searched up that it was my coolant bypass valve having an issue. Apparently it’s a defective part in Toyota Corolla and rav4 models from 2019-2023 I believe. The notice would come on and off each time I would start the vehicle. The dealership has confirmed this issue is common and after having it inspected and diagnosed, it was indeed the coolant bypass valve. My safety and the safety of others were fine, my engine would’ve been the unfortunate casualty if I did not take care of this.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/24/2024

As I was driving my check engine light turned and also another message saying “drive-start control malfunction”. A few second after another light came one showing “engine coolant temp high. On 11/24/24 I experienced this mechanical failure as I was driving. I was driving behind another car, where my car suddenly lost power and randomly accelerated almost causing me to crash behind the car in front of me. Thankfully I had time to press on the brakes to prevent me from crashing. I also did some research to see if other drivers also experienced this fault and seems that a lot of people with these Toyota Corolla and rav4 models. I also found that an active lawsuit is ongoing against Toyota regarding this same issue. This definitely should be something that needs to be recalled as it puts our lives at risks to either crash or even catch on fire due to overheating. My vehicle gets serviced regularly.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/16/2024

Car would not start/turn over - not battery related. Toyota determined the ecu went bad and stated the cause was improperly jumping the battery. The issue happened randomly one day (car was driving fine previous days).

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/06/2024

My 2021 Toyota Corolla has 43k miles at this moment and the engine coolant bypass valve went out prematurely. There should be a recall on this part because a lot of people are having issues with this part on these cars at such low millage. Thanks.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

I recently purchased a 2021 Toyota Corolla se. After a few days the "engine maintenance required - see dealer" notification appeared. See as it was purchased very recently, I assumed this was the oil maintenance light, and reset it. Later that day, it came back, and I reset it a different method under the assumption I did it wrong. The next day it was back, and that is when I realized it must be something else. So I started doing some research and found lots of other people have had this same issue: 2020-21 Corolla, greater than 30k miles, usually less than 60k, and while the check engine light *does not turn the car is throwing an error code: p268115 - engine coolant bypass valve. Sure enough, I have the codes pulled and I have that code showing up. So I took it to the local Toyota dealership. They stated that the issue was not a warrantable, so I would likely have to pay out of pocket. After a slight fuss, they agreed to fix it as a "one-time goodwill gesture, performed in the interest of customer satisfaction. . . " so in the end, they did fix it; I did still have to pay for a diagnostic of the issue which is frustrating, especially since I was dead on in my analysis of the issue. To answer the guideline questions: engine coolant bypass valve leaking engine coolant could cause the engine to overheat, which can lead to fires, not exactly ideal. It can also cause electrical shorts, leading to more issues. Yes. Lancaster Toyota confirmed the issue. Yes, lancaster Toyota confirmed that the part was faulty. They appeared shortly after buying the car. There were no error lights like I'd expect, but there was the constantly appearing "engine maintenance required - see dealer" message which the owner's manual states is simply the 5000 mile oil change warning. Hidden behind this message is the error code p268115.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

To start, on [xxx], I was going through an intersection on a country road and my automatic emergency braking engaged for no reason. My car stopped despite no other vehicle or object being in my way or anywhere close to me. I found it really weird but did not think much about after the fact. I have also heard a rattling noise under my hood since [xxx] and have reported this to Toyota and tried to have it fixed multiple times (and showed them videos) but they were never able to duplicate the noise so it has not been remedied. On [xxx] I was traveling on a highway during rush hour and the traffic in front of me came to a sudden stop. I braked as hard as I could; my automatic emergency braking did not engage and I rear ended the car in front of me (minimal damage to that car). We both immediately pulled partway onto the narrow left berm (we had both been in the left lane to get onto another highway). My car then turned off by itself and gave me an engine warning (I believe low engine oil- I had just had it serviced 3 days prior). The other car owner and I exchanged information quickly and decided to drive away because we were blocking rush hour traffic and it was dangerous. However, my car would not start back up. I called 911 and they came to use their vehicle to push me to the right side of the highway onto an exit where I was no longer blocking traffic. During the wait, I felt like I was going to die with traffic honking and swerving to avoid me. When the police officer was moving my car, the parking brake engaged when I put the car in neutral and would not turn off, so the smell of burning rubber was strong since the tires would not roll. Once the tow truck driver arrived he was able to use jumper cables to disengage the parking brake but the car still would not start. There were no prior warning lights. The car not starting was confirmed by the dealer- they are holding off doing maintenance to have an engineer check out the car and figure out what happened. 46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2019 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/28/2024

I got a “engine maintenance required” warning message. I check with the dealer and upon diagnosis told me about a faulty coolant bypass valve which is a common problem for Toyota rav4 and Corolla. The Toyota mechanic mentioned that this should have been a recall issue. The cost to repair was unbelievable considering it will take only a short time to do. Bought the parts and will have it installed somewhere where the labor is cheaper. Since it is a common problem, the manufacturer should recall this issue, replace the faulty part and pay the cost of everything.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2024 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/25/2024

My son reported driving home from school. He was stopped an intersection ready to make a turn. When he stepped on the gas pedal to go, the engine stopped and a message "engine stopped, steering power low" message appeared in the dashboard. Engine light and steering light also came "on" the dash. This may occur while driving and put the driver at risk. His 2024 Toyota Corolla was brought in to the wesley chapel Toyota dealership yesterday 10/29/2024. The technician did not find any error codes and found the battery and alternator to be in good working condition. Issue unresolved by the dealership.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

Vehicle was brought to Toyota because of "engine maintenance required" message. We initially thought it was "maintenance required" so husband said we may need to change the oil, but it was only a few thousand miles since last oil change. I tried to remove the message but the Toyota manual did not have any instructions on the "engine maintenance required" message removal. When he left Toyota after changing oil, same message was on dashboard. Husband went back to Toyota and asked them to remove the "engine maintenance required" and was told that there is a coolant bypass valve that must be changed in order for the message to go away. The cost should be around $1,000 and then proceeded to tell him he needed to buy new tires as well. All would total about $2,800. Vehicle has 58k miles and we are afraid to drive the vehicle now until we know what is actually wrong with it. It's suspicious to read all the complaints describing the same situation we have with Toyota. By the way, after we were told about the needed repair, I started getting emails from Toyota about purchasing a Toyota warranty, advertisements in the mail from car warranty companies and phone calls from Toyota salespeople to come and buy/lease a new Corolla and I would get a "great deal"! is this some scam to generate business? are Toyota owners being subjected to a "bait and switch" scam? I would like an investigation initiated by your agency. My vehicle is available upon request and our safety is at risk because we truly don't know what is wrong with it and afraid to drive it any longer. If your agency wants to read complaints from other owners, I direct you to read the complaints on [xxx] or google "Toyota engine maintenance repair" message. It's very much an eye-opener about fraud being perpetrated by Toyota. I can provide any documentation needed when I am personally contacted and requested to furnish them. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2021 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

Apparently my car's engine coolant bypass valve is broken and it's a common case with my car's model that's made after 2020. Seems like it there's a need a recall for such a thing since it's a defective part they knew about since my car was screaming at me for an engine maintenance. However, the check engine wasn't on. I went to Toyota at elk grove, CA and knew what the issue was pretty quick and charging me $700 to get it replaced. I feel like it's intentionally being handled poorly so they keep charging me 700 every few years to replace a $80 part. As well my story is very common with other customers of Toyota cars made after 2020. I wanted to report this since that's potentially harmful to put out a car that could have engine problems easily. Especially it's a fairly newer car. Also, they have yet to replace the part for the known recall on this vehicle.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/18/2024

My 2020 Toyota Corolla's warning light which stated "engine maintenance required visit your dealer" came on. When I called the dealership they stated I would need to come in and hook it up to diagnose the problem which would cose me $185 + taxes and fees. Then once diagnosed they would be able to fix the problem. I checked with o'reilly's autopart store and autozone which both of their scanners found nothing wrong. So I informed Toyota and they stated they I need to bring it to them because their scanner/tool is the one which will tell us what the problem is specific to my car. But they stated they think it could be a hose related to my coolant system to prevent my car from overheating. They stated to watch the temperature gauge while driving as it may overheat and become dangerous to drive. If this happens or I see any smoke pull over and get out if the car. However they haven't seen anyone have to do this so they think I should be fine but I should fix this problem soon. I asked if that is the problem would it fall under my mechanical breakdown insurance coverage and the dealership stated that if that's the problem yes but if I go through the insurance it will take a really long time to fix because they'd have to file a claim and get paid before doing any repairs. Then they said I'd have to pay the copay and any difference. I was confused as my insurance states I only have to pay my copay. However, I had someone else with a scanner/tool hook theirs up and to see if we could check the actual problem and it did say the error code p268115 engine bypass coolant valve. So, this was the issue. I viewed online that there is a class action lawsuit going on right now for this same problem with 2019-2023 Toyota rav 4 and Corolla's. Toyota failed to disclose this information to it's consumers and it is not being covered under the power train warranty either. This safety issue with cars overheating is dangerous and costly.
