2 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/24/2017

Immediately following a cold soak startup my 2009 Toyota Corolla makes a very loud rattle noise within the engine compartment for approximately 1-2 seconds. It will consistently do this upon cold startup, and is a known defect within the camshaft timing gear assembly of the vehicle. Please see attached documentation for more details, including the $896 repair quoted from the dealer (page 2). It is my understanding that this issue can eventually lead to more serious issues with the engine, and I think it is a shame that the dealer did not catch this earlier/ is now quoting such a high price for repair. It is my hope that something can be done to make Toyota better respect it's customer's satisfactions/safety, and take care of this known issue at no cost to it's customers.

3 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

4 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/16/2015

Toyota has a TSB for 2009 - 2010 Corolla with the 2zr engine, it is t-sb-0087-09 brief engine knock/rattle noise at cold startup, my car has this problem and needs the camshaft timing gear assembly replaced. I called "Toyota care" at the recommendation of the local Toyota service manager. Toyota care said my VIN number was not included in this TSB and that it is out of warranty. (my Corolla was an early 2009 production model, mfd in 2/2008, in service begining in may of 2008 ( I believe) and that there is nothing they could do to help me. My VIN is not included in the range of eligible VIN numbers and is out of warranty. My Corolla has had the noise for a long time and only has appx. 60k miles on it, it is obviously a manufacturing flaw or error and Toyota should recall all 2009 Corollas for repair. The website Toyotanation and Corolland note many owners with the same problem. When the car cold starts it rattles for the first second like there is no oil in the motor, a very loud knock, this also occurs on warm starts after only a few hours of being parked, and sometimes while driving. My Corollas has had it's oil and filter changed every 5k miles since new; obviously not precipitated by neglect or abuse. Thank you for attention to this issue, sincerely, kris boggs.

5 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2015 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/23/2015

Bought may 2015, warm day, firm brakes. Wet, cold fall months brakes became soft w/ excessive travel & erratic during 40mph & under. Took to dealer sept 2015 at 1,562 miles. Tech performed road test. Couldn¿t duplicate contions. Checked for codes. Stated ¿found normal braking conitions¿. I started driving again & noticed during warm days around 70 deg brakes changed hardness with a/c on. More firm. During colder days brakes would go within 2 inches of floor before working. Took to dealer on ¿walk in¿ basis when car was acting up. Drove w/ tech 1 hr tried to get him to notice difference in brakes. Tech stated brakes were acting ¿normal¿ & that I just wasn¿t familiar w/ how the systems operated. I instisted it wasn¿t normal. Tech contacted manufacturer. They said replace master cylinder and bleed system. Returned car & stated ¿driving correctly now¿. I started driving again & noticed whisteling sound coming from engine compt when driving under 30mph between bdlgs w/ window down. Brakes go all the way to the floor at times & they grab & stop the car abruptly. Especially in stop-&-go traffic. Took to dealer March 2016 at 4,800 miles. I suggested checking entire vacuum system for leaks. Tech only checked line to brake booster. Tech made ¿little¿ adjustment to e-brake & rear brakes. Tech stated brakes ¿feels similar to new Corolla¿ & no whistling sound. I can still hear whistling sound & brakes still have same issues! I think it¿s a design flaw related to the entire vacuum system & should be recalled! told dealer. Test drove 2016 Honda civic w/ similar braking systems it performed like a new car should! other issues w/this Corolla are the suspension is too ¿loose¿ when traveling above 55mph & changing lanes, the engine is way to loud when accel & often knocks during accel & idling (changed gas stations & checked fuel type, still same problem), & headlights r 2 bright. . .

7 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

My engine started making a rattle sound when starting it up. I searched online and found several complaints about this problem. It seems to be a defective cam shaft timing gear assembly, which is no longer covered by my warranty. I am upset that this has not been recalled, since it is a serious concern especially when it deals with the vehicle's engine. I hope Toyota will take responsibility for this. There are many people out there with the same problem. Toyota already has had several recalls for this vehicle, so why not back the engine?.

8 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/24/2013

I noticed last month a "brief engine knock/rattle noise at cold startup. It has happened every cold start since last month. I did research on the internet, and found a TSB-0087-09 issue regarding this problem. Toyota has since corrected this problems on their 2010 models - but did nothing for the current owners of the 2009 models. With a engine any thing could happen regarding safety!!! I believe it is selfishness on the part of Toyota, for what I call a safety issue. The gear in the intake or exhaust is bad in the engine. Not knowing what it could lead too for elderly that love to drive these vehicles?!!! it is covered under power train warranty - 3 yr/60k. But this is a known problem defect on Toyotas manufacturing end - it should be covered no matter what. More people have this issue, and probably do not complain to this agency. Probably never think to - that is why you may not have more complaints regarding this issue (TSB-0087-09). I wish you would address this Toyota over in japan. Please keep me posted if any thing will come available for the unfortunate consumer!! sincerely, brad conrad landata1@yahoo. Com.

9 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/13/2012

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the vehicle would make a rattling noise when first started. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told there was a problem with the cam shaft. The dealer stated the cam shaft would need to be replaced, but wanted to do a 1,000 mile oil consumption test instead. The contact was concerned because the dealer stated the engine could also fail. The failure mileage was 78,000 and the current mileage was 94,000.

10 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2000 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/26/2009

The "check engine" light on my Toyota Corolla le was on before I purchased it on March 26, 2009. The dealer guaranteed that once it went through the inspection, they would resolve any issue regarding any problems with the vehicle. Once they said the car passed the inspection, I picked up the car with the "check engine" light off and that same night while I was driving, it went back on. Since that day, the vehicle has had problems such as turning off completely several times, a shaking engine which causes a rattling noise, and the check engine light is on till this day. Also, I missed several days of work on account of the car not starting-I even had to boost the car for the battery to turn on. For three months now, I have spent countless of hours at their mechanics trying to fix these issues. They have only just changed the oil two times on the car, drove it around the block and -to them- found nothing. First they said it was the routers that needed to be replace. After I replaced them, the problem was still on going and they have yet to fix the check engine light or the problems the vehicle has given me. Not only do they inspect the car at their own dealer but also continue to name things that could be wrong with the car that aren't the problem. For the price of the car, it is not worth it at all. I have a 2 month old daughter in a vehicle I do not feel safe driving. I am sending a complaint so I can either get the car traded in for another one, or get my money back.

11 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/15/2003

I have had numerous unresolved problems with my 2003 Toyota Corolla. The air conditioning/heater fan quits at random. It does start back but obviously has a short. It comes and goes. The dealer has stated each time they are unable to duplicate the problem. It also has suspension problems. Since new the car has made unpleasant claning and rattling noises in the front end. I have had it looked at many times with no resolution. It feels unstable in windy conditions and un even surfaces. I've actually thought I had a flat tire because of the car swaying so badly in the wind and on uneven surfaces. I've owned many small cars before and even an older Corolla so I'm aware of what is normal. It has definite supsension problems. I honestly feel it's dangerous for myself and others due to the suspension. I need help. There are other problems with this car as well. It's a true lemon.

12 Engine Rattling And Whining Sounds problem of the 1999 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/06/2001

My engine makes rattling noise since it reached 30,000 miles. The noise only comes for first 10 minutes when the car is cold. I reported this problem to carousel Toyota, PA during warranty period. Since at that time the noise did not come they could fix it as noise only comes when car is cold. Now my car is out of warranty and engine still makes rattling noise.
