37 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

The 2004 Toyota Corolla has a defective fuel filler neck. The metal used by Toyota for this fuel filler neck is corroding, causing leakage of gas vapors at the gas cap. The leakage causes the "check engine light" to come on, and people are forced to pay Toyota $400 for repairs in order to pass epa mandated emissions testing in order to renew the car's registration. It is clear that the fuel filler neck is defective because it has been said that the replacement ones have better quality metal and won't corrode. The NHTSA needs to pressure Toyota to recall the Corollas and to reimburse the owners who have been forced to pay for this defect in the design of the fuel filler necks. If the epa forces cars to pass the emissions testing, then the federal government should also force Toyota to fix at their expense a known defect like the corroding metal in the fuel filler necks that affects the emissions system in their cars.

38 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

While pulling into parking space, experienced sudden acceleration, while foot on brake . Unable to stop car, it jumped the curb and hit a tree. The tree stopped the car, however the wheels must have kept going, as there was dirt torn up and spewed behind the tires. Air bag did not deploy. Toyota notified. Car towed to dealer. Toyota investigation pending, which according to Toyota may take up to 2 months. Toyota said this 2006 Corolla was not on 'recall' list. They also said they will investigate but do not expect to find it to be their fault, as they said they have never found themselves to be 'at fault' when the car was not on the 'recall list'.

42 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla that is part of the accelerator pedal reinforcement bar recall/installation. I have noticed another problem that appears to also involve the accelerator. This vehicle has a 5 speed manual transmission. The problem occurs in both 3rd and 4th gear. This problem is not consistent meaning it is not always noticed every time I drive, I would maintain that it occurs at least 50% of the time however. Problem: I attempt to maintain a constant speed for instance in 3rd gear at 30 mph, the vehicle feels as if it wants to speed up, I then remove some pressure from the accelerator, the vehicle then slow by jerking, I then attempt to accelerate and the vehicle jerks again, bottom line is I can not maintain a constant speed. The road conditions do not matter, flat, hill, bumpy, smooth, wet dry, 30 mph, 31 mph, 32, mph etc. I cannot maintain a constant speed in 3rd and 4th gear. I am not sure of an approximate date, it has happened numerous times since I purchased the vehicle in August of 2009. I will just enter a random date below.

43 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/02/2010

While in reverse and backing my 2004 Toyota Corolla into my garage the car suddenly accelerated and I hit the rear of the garage. I am positive I did not have my foot on the gas pedal. The engine was still racing when I put it in drive and drove out of the garage . I had to run into a snowpile on the front lawn to stop the vehicle. After the engine was turned off I looked at the floor mat and saw nothing wrong with it. This same problem while reversing into the garage happened in sept 2005. At the time I just thought the mistake was mine, now after the second incident I am convinced there is a mechanical problem with the car.

44 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) 2009 Toyota Corolla-VIN# [xxx]. On 02/13/10 I brought my car in for the recall with the gas pedal, they installed the accelerator reinforcement bar installation. I idd n ot have a gas peddle promble but brought the car in because of the recall. Since then I now have a problem when I come to a full stop and push down on gas pedal to go my pedal gets stuck I need to press hard to get it moving which I never had this before. I called Toyota today about this problem and I have a appt. March 11/10 to check it out.

45 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/20/2010

I own a 2006 Toyota Corolla le. Earlier this month, I lost all but an extremely minimal amount of power while driving. I nursed the car to my home and contacted my local Toyota dealership by telephone and described the problem. Over the phone, the service person with whom I spoke said that he believed the problem was with one of the car's computers. He indicated that the problem I described was not unique, but that I should bring it in for formal diagnostic tests. When I had the car towed into the dealership, the service personnel verified that one of the car's computers had to be replaced. I spoke with two of the service personnel at the time and both gave me the impression that the problem was not unusual for that year's Corolla le. I bring this to your attention because of the current questions regarding Toyota's problems and the possibility that some of the major problems could have an electronic origin.

46 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/17/2010

2-17-10 2007 Toyota Corolla stalled on 4 lane highway. I had to rent a car. Went back to the car and it started and ran fine for a few days. Then started stalling again. Once when on interstate I-26 I was in passing lane doing 65 mph and it stalled and I had to get it off the road. I was almost run over by irate motorist. If that's not a safety problem I don't know what is. Problem became progressively worse and it would stall every 10-15 miles. Took it to mechanic on 3-15-10 and he installed a new oxygen sensor and everything was fine for the next 100 miles. Now the check engine light is back on and the mechanic suspects the ecm is the problem. Now I'm afraid to drive the car. Don't know if used parts are available.

47 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

I have 2010 Toyota Corolla (VIN# [xxx] ) purchased on oct 31 2009 from sansoneautomall, NJ. There is a problem with the steering column initially which started with some unique sound, then from Feb 2010 I was seriously facing steering freeze (will get harden) only 15-20% of steering moves when in 0' speed, for this I have visited my dealer service center 3 times but there is no use. Only with lot of disappointment and arguments saying "what is the reason to buy a brand new car to get problems" I was requesting to solve my problem. They simply said, there is nothing we can do if you have no other mean to commute its upto you and if you want you call Toyota head quarters for this. I even spent lot of time in calling main Toyota nr but simply I get voice message that "there is huge volume of call waiting please wait". I really wonder when I/anyone buy a car from dealer and if they cannot receive me assist me properly "where from I get the justice????". Recently I found two more new problems they are: in a slope road car picks-up acceleration and maintains speed as if it is cruised and once I apply break after a while the speed comes to normal position other prob- fuel indicator stuck up to full level indi' even the fuel is low. With this I'm day by day getting depressed as I spent quite lot of savings (money) on the car to avoid any hassles buying a used car, but unfortunately its a disaster to me. I request to provide me needed solution to fix my depressing situation. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

48 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla that frequently has a strong gas smell and on 3 different occasions the steering has given me a sense of control loss similar to the sensation of hydroplaning.

49 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/30/2010

I have owned my 2006 Toyota Corolla s with a 5-speed manual transmission since July 2006. In that time I have had approximately 5 incidences when the engine raced unexpectedly. This has always occurred when I had the clutch depressed and was braking. I have thought that my right foot, which I intended to be on the center of the brake pedal, was actually on the side of the brake pedal such that it simultaneously contacted the accelerator pedal. This explanation is problematic in that even with the brake pedal fully depressed, it is still higher than the accelerator pedal. The only way I could be depressing both the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal at the same time is for my foot to be twisted and off center at the same time. Maybe this is possible, I don't know. What usually happens is that the engine races(maybe 4000 to 5000 rpm) but since the clutch is already depressed and my foot is on the brake, the car does not speed up. Usually the engine only races for a second or two and I don't know how it gets settled down--maybe I reposition my foot a little--I don't know what happens because it is always unexpected and happens so quickly I am left confused and scared. The last time this happened was a few days ago so with all the publicity about Toyota accelerator pedals, I thought I would report this problem even though my car is not covered in the recall.

50 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/28/2009

Runaway Toyota. . . I was exiting I-8 e on lake murray exit in heavy traffic and while slowing the car suddenly accelerated and hit the car ahead which it turn hit the car ahead of it. No one hurt.

51 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/22/2009

Purchased a 2009 Toyota Corolla on Jan. 31, 2009. Immediately noticed "unwanted acceleration", the car wanted to go when stopped unless the brake was applied hard and did not slow down immediately when foot was taken off the gas pedal. Gas pedal did not always come all the way up when foot taken off, but would pop up if brakes applied hard. Cruise control did not work properly. Mentioned concern several times to Toyota service dept. They told me that what I was describing was normal for those cars. The car was in an accident on 12/22/09. Hit another car from behind. I think that the "not slowing down immediately when foot taken off gas pedal" was a contributing factor to the accident. There were no injuries but the car was badly damaged. Toyota sent recall notice but said VIN#'s beginning in j not affected. Our car begins with j. Recently send letters to Toyota and waiting for reply.

52 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

December 17, 2009 the ecm unit failed in our 2007 Toyota Corolla. Engine cut off. This is a known problem. There was an angel on my daughter's shoulder as she was on a low traffic city street when this happened and she was able to pull over safely. If this had happened on the freeway it could've been deadly.

53 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2008 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/19/2009

On four separate occasions the engine revved up to 6000rpm on my 2008 Toyota Corolla ce when I was stopped. My foot was off the accelerator and no floor mats were near the accelerator. I brought it to my dealer but they did not find anything wrong with it. I reported it to Toyota corporate but they have not responded other then to say that to tell me that my car was not covered by the recall.

54 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/14/2009

2009 Toyota Corolla, "s" automatic transmission. The problem was initially identified by me when my car would not catch while on a slope in drive. The transmission would roll back. The dealership said this was normal due to a loss of pressure, however it would do it even if I barley stopped on a gradual incline for a few seconds. This has caused me to roll back unless I had one foot on the brake and one foot on the gas while to keep me steady to start. This happened at from the time I purchased the car. Recently, I my engine has been running really rough and winding at a high pitch while driving. It now intermittently goes between gears and downshifts automatically into gears that are not appropriate for the speeds traveling. This causes a drastic down speed, and example is I will be on the freeway traveling speeds between 50-65 and it will downshift and reduce my speed to 40 mph or less, then I will try to accelerate and it will redline out, as if I am in neutral and I will have no control to regain speed until it automatically pushes itself back into gear, and then increases my speed at a rapid pace, without me putting my foot on the gas. At this point, I am required to place my foot on the brake to control my speeds. The dealership has taken my car back twice and claimed to have fixed it twice based on the reads, but I have had the same problem. The reads on the computer will say that it is an electrical malfunction. . . However they can not identify where the malfunction is coming from. Parts have not been replaced and no repairs have been made to fix this at this time. Toyota is not assisting with the recall and I am left with lots of shop hours. Thinking about registering for the lemon law about my car, I drive apx. 1000 miles week and my car is not saving, consistent, and is a safety issue since have no control while my car malfunctions. I can only react to what is happening. It also makes a loud clunking sound, and a high winding sound when redlining.

55 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/05/2009

I have a 2009 Toyota Corolla. It accelerated while I was waiting for the traffic light to turn red to green. The rpm shot up so I put in neutral and then the rpm rapidly shot up to the red mark so the turn off the engine and parked it at my work since evening of 11/05/09.

56 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2004 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/29/2009

10/29/09 I turned on the ignition and the engined immediately revved into the danger zone. I was not able to stop it. I turned the car off and checked the gas peddle. . . . . The floor mat was nowhere near the pedal and there was no debris on the floor to cause this occurrence. I waited a few minutes and then restarted it. It was fine then. . . 10/31/09 I took it to Toyota dealership and was told they had not heard of any problems with the acceleration of there cars. They "performed top engine cleaning and throttle body cleaning" told me they thought this would take care of the problem. . Charged me $176. 98 and I was on my way. This had happened twice before but not to this degree.

57 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

Throttle body has shot down unexpectedly right on the middle of on the road. The car has been fully disabled since gas did not go to the engine. Occur for first time. Throttle body has been replaced by taking from used car. Master say it just stopped to function.

59 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

2010 Toyota Corolla w/gas pedal that sticks very often during initial acceleration. Has done this probably 100-200 times since purchasing in September.

60 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/27/2009

Very often, my 2009 Corolla will have a very low idle, the car acts as it is going to stall. It shudders, the tach drops low, but then will come back up. It happens several times per week when I am either backing up or going from a stop into first gear. I have driven only manual transmissions for over 26 years, and this is the first vehicle I have owned that this has happened with. I fear I will be hit from behind, or t-boned when the car acts as if it wants to stall. It never has stalled, but it frightens us. As I mentioned, the car shudders, shakes when this happens to us. We feel it may have something to do with a low idle problem, either with the electronics or software. We have taken it back to the dealer a few times, but it's the famous "can not duplicate" answer. We only drive this vehicle usually from April to late October. We live in the snowbelt of ohio and drive our 4x4 Jeep Nov. Through March. I also drive a 2001 manual transmission Honda civic, with never theses issues. I can't give incident dates, this happens frequently during each week, ever since I took delivery of this car in March, 2008. Again, this is a 2009 Corolla s.

61 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

The check engine light came on, the diagnostic said it was the O2 sensor which was replaced. The light went out and came back on again the next day. A mechanic checked it and said it was the catalytic converter. I read where catalytic converters don't go bad by themselves, therefore the problem has to stem from a manufactures defect and we should not have to pay for continual repairs.

62 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2010 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

For entire time owned - there is a gap of seconds between pressing gas pedal and actual acceleration. When I press gas pedal there is a hesitation leading me to press harder. Then of course the car has a sudden sprint in acceleration. This is not safe. I have had the car for 5. 5 months so I am getting better at waiting instead of pressing harder. But I feel this is definitely a defect. I inquired over phone with service manager where I purchased - explanation: I am not use to a 4 cylinder, which I believed because I have never driven a 4 cylinder. But, I am beginning not to believe this excuse.

63 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 07/23/2009

2009 Toyota Corolla - floor mat (purchased at pepboys) got stuck on the acceleration pedal at maximum speed. The consumer also stated the gas lever inside the vehicle would not open the gas lid.

64 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/19/2009

2006 Toyota Corolla shuts off and also sometimes rpm drops really low. It happened more than once. I finally took it to Toyota on 11/30/09 and they replaced throttle body assembly. Old part is not available. Car does not shut off anymore but rpm still drops really low to the point that it almost shuts off. Is Toyota going to address this problem?.

65 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/08/2009

Toyota Corolla xrs 2005 gas pedal sticking. While driving speed increased. I had to fight with gas pedal and brake pedal to bring vehicle under control. Danger was imminent and I fought with pedals. If I had been on an open road with nothing ahead of me (giving additional time) I would have depressed the clutch. This is a xrs having 6 speed manual and larger engine than standard Corolla. This has happened at least 3 or 4 times in the 5 years I have owned the vehicle. I am not sure what happened wasn't the result of operator error but repetition of similar event indicates other than operator error. The date indicated on form was only used so that I can continue entering data.

66 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2007 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 06/02/2009

My husband and I just dropped our two kids off at my mother-in-laws house and were on our way back home when I started to smell gas. I told my husband and he stated to pull the car over and he would check it out. He popped the hood and flames shot out from under the hood. The first thing that I thought was my husband was on fire. I jumped out of the car and found my husband on the other side of the car looking for the kids in the backseat and he was screaming get out of the car. I jumped out of the car and we ran. We looked back and all I saw was a big ball of fire. When the fired department put out the flames all that was left of my car was a burnt frame, the 2 back tires and the spoiler. My husband and I are really upset by this situation. What if our five months old and nine year old was in the car at the time? what if my husband was burnt severely by the fire? what would happen to the children if both of us died in the fire?.

67 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2003 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 02/23/2009

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Corolla. The check engine indicator illuminated and the contact took the vehicle to the dealer. She was informed that the filler neck and gas cap needed to be replaced. There was no recall for this failure, so the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. The failure mileage was 15,670. Updated 3/24/09 updated 03/27/09.

68 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/31/2009

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The conact e stated that while driving at unknown speeds, she heard an unusual noise coming from the vehicle. The contact shut off the engine and restarted it, and the noise stopped. She also noticed that when attempting to brake in rainy weather or wet road conditions, there was an abnormal hesitation, an increase in stopping distance and the check engine warning light would illuminate. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the dealer advised the fuel sensor was causing the check engine light to illuminate. The vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileages were 18,393. Updated 10/27/10.

69 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 01/20/2009

I was driving my 2009 Toyota Corolla. Once, prior to the event in question I had briefly noticed a lack of acceleration. I pressed on the accelerator and nothing happened. The car just quit moving forward. No noise or anything. But, in a few seconds, I tried again and it seemed normal so, I decided it was just my imagination. Then, in Jan /Feb I was coming home from the gym (thankfully not on the freeway) about 9pm on a city street traveling about 30 mph. I tried to accelerate slightly to the speed limit of 35mph and discovered (again, with no warning) that my car would not move forward. None of the systems worked steering etc. But at that speed I did manage to stop. I called 911 and the police stopped 3 lanes of traffic and pushed me to the side. I waited an hour for aaa and had the car towed to the Toyota dealer. It took them a whole day to decide it was an electronic problem and to "fix" it. I was scared to drive it, but I did for maybe another month before deciding that he constant fear of it happening again (maybe on the freeway) was not worth it. The dealer made me a "deal" on a trade for a 2010 Corolla. I drove this car until 2 weeks ago. I could not live with the anxiety of having another (in my mind) electronic failure. I am one who is convinced the Toyota problem is electronic and not related to mechanics. I now have a Ford. Thank you for your attention.

70 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2009 Toyota Corolla

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

The contact owns a 2009 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the steering wheel was very loose and had a lot of "play" in it. Also, he was advised that the vehicle should receive a mpg rating of 35 for the highway. However, the vehicle only received approximately 27 mpg. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer had not been notified concerning the issue. The failure mileage was 2,000 and the current mileage was 13,000.
