Toyota Corolla owners have reported 7 problems related to noises during shifting (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota Corolla based on all problems reported for the Corolla.
Transmission is clunking and it seems like an extremely rough downshifting mostly at freeway speeds and it actually sounds and feels as though you've hit something on the road even though road was clear. I called the dealer and was told if it could not be duplicated that they wouldn't be able to figure out the problem. When I last brought it to dealer for oil change they put on the vehicle report that the transmission fluid was black and when I asked what should be done the service adviser didn't text back. The transmission seems to be slipping more often and I estimate the clunking and strange noise has happened 10-15 times at least. It is nerve wracking when it occurs because it is scary to feel that when you are driving on the freeway.

2020 Toyota Corolla se -(vehicle purchased new) (cvt transmission) upon minimal to normal acceleration vehicle makes a hard shift feel like a bump kick in acceleration of speed between 8-9 mph. Will feel more of a hard shift at times if coasting with minimal speed then to the normal acceleration (start and stop traffic type of conditions). Periodically once reaching to speed of 36 mph seems like the transmission is starting to slip then continues with normal operation. While sedentary at stop light vehicle has had loss of power in and out near stalling out. Separate occasion without the air conditioner being on, a rough idol took place. At times if put in sports mode shifting is smooth without too much trouble; with exception of at higher speed open road removing off the gas pedal will make a whining high rev noise like the transmission went out and did not down shift even with pressure applied to the brake. Will then down shift after approximately 15-20 seconds. Lane departure indicators have gone off without there being a correct response for that action taking place. Vehicle has been owned for less than ninety days and appears to continually further in its defects.

Vehicle was stopped at a traffic light and when the light turned for a left turn I tried to accelerate to get through the intersection when the vehicle lost power. This has happened on three occasions and I took it to the dealership to get it checked and they said they could not replicate it. Transmission has not been shifting correctly and now the transmission is making a strange grinding noise. This Corolla has a cvt transmission and the Toyota Corolla forums are telling me that Toyota is aware of this problem and had issued a special service campaign to update the software. This has since been rescinded because the update did not fix the problem. I have read that this loss of power is causing some serious safety concerns, especially if it happens on high speed highways.

Vehicle began making a grinding, chatter type noise. I took the vehicle to a private mechanic and found that the transmission has to be replaced. In looking for replacement transmission I found several complaints for the exact same issue. Many have had the transmission replaced only to have the issue resurface with the new/refurbished transmission. This would seem like a manufacturing flaw and could be very problematic if the car will no longer shift into gear, as several complaints have noted.

Was at a stop light and put the car into 1st gear and proceeded to accelerate up to 15mpg. Upon shifting the car into 2nd gear it did not take and the car then made a noise. I had to then place the car back into 1st gear and pull to the side of the road almost getting hit by other traffic and stop on the side of the road for a full inspection. There was nothing visible upon inspection and no current noises at that time so I proceeded to go again first shifting into 1st gear then second and I stopped at 3rd and went straight home. About one and 1/2 miles later it started making another noise similar to the first, but it was continuous and so I parked the car at home and had it towed to the dealership. They then explained to me that this was a very common problem with this motor(being the type that it was) and what had happened is a rod in the engine had been spun. They said it could have been worse and I could have lost control and wrecked the car very easily. They said that due to the nature and price they would not fix the car because it would have to have a full new engine replacement and that would be up to $8k because of it being a rare and high performance price. After further inspection and online research it is very common while downshifting this engine that they slip a gear and spin the rod mostly in the #4 rod and need a new engine for complete repairs. Also it would very likely continue to happen again and again thus putting me and my family in danger on the road. Toyota will not fix the problem they do acknowledge it and that it exists, but will not do the repairs because of the price issue. It is a major safety issue though. The bar also requested that it be reported to NHTSA.

Veh purchased new may, 2007. It had less than 150 miles on it when the 1st incident happened. I was driving down a grade at approx 65 mph. There was a traffic light approx 350 to 450 ft ahead. I knew I could not make the light so I applied my brakes. The transmission or engine seemed to seize up and surge and my brakes were almost useless. It is an auto transmission & all I could think to do to stop was brake hard & shift into park. This did stop it. . . But I was frightened. Subsequently, approx two months later, while on vacation out of state, the veh started making a ticking sound as soon as the engine hit 3000 rpm's. Upon returning to CA I took the car to the dealer and told him about both problems. They supposedly put it on their scope & no diagnoses code appeared. They said the noise was a loose hose??? funny it only ticked at exactly 3000 rpm's!!!. They could not explain the seizing and surging. This car has now done this seizing and surging thing three more times. It is scary and frightening!! the 2nd & 3rd times, I again was on a down grade going around 65 mph at around 3000 rpm's. Again it was a situation where I braked that caused the seizing then surging. The last & 4th time this thing happened was last week. I was idling in a drive through , waiting for my food. The transmission was in drive & I had my foot on the brake. It was in this position for about 5-7 minutes, moving slowly forward every 1-2 minutes. It was a warmer day- as I moved forward again, I pushed the a/c button to circulate some air. Suddenly, the car surged forward. . Made an awful sound & no amount of braking seemed to hold it . Again, as with the very first time, this brought the car into control!
I work out of town and depend on having a car. . . . But I am getting scared to drive this car. I have approx 8,500 miles on it now. I don't know if I trust the dealer to take this matter seriously & would really like Toyota's help.

2003 Toyota Corolla le with only 120,000 miles needs new manual transmission at the cost of $3800 for a rebuilt transmission. Car was making loud grinding noise when shifting and having convulsions which forced us to get off the highway and onto the emergency lane. There were no previous "warning signs" this was going to happen. All warranty maintenance has been kept up to date on this vehicle at the right time. Toyota needs to issue a recall on these transmissions since they now seem to be more and more a common problem amongst this particular model year Corolla.
