1 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

Starting this summer our 2013 Toyota Highlander was having a terrible odor coming from the ac. Went to dealer and was told they would clean out the ac/ evaporator box with ammonia and then put a mint spray to reduce ammonia smell. Paid $65 for this service. On way home I smell nothing but a stale odor. The next day the moldy smell was back. Didn't even have to start car. The second I opened door it hit me. I went on google and saw a number of people were having same problem with Toyota cars. Not just a Highlander!! the avalon, camry and others are having this same issue. The problem appears to be mold in the evaporator box and vents. Have had many vehicles and never a problem like this one. Bought the car new and for Toyota not to admit to a bad design is disappointing.

2 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/19/2015

After an synthetic oil change and rear brake job at firestone a few days earlier in atlanta, I was driving along and my check vsc system light came on. I then took it back to firestone and they put it on the computer and there were no codes; subsequently they suggested that I take it to the dealer for diagnosis. The diagnosis at the dealer revealed that I needed a new abs accumulator and this could be repaired for $3,118. I was not interested in spending this amount since the part has a know design manufacturers defect. I decided to do some research on clearing the check vsc system light and followed the instructions and the code cleared for about 9 days and reappeared on yesterday for some reason. What can I do?.

4 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

The sun visor popped when I was pulling it down to sheild my eyes and now it will not return to original position. Concern as it gets in my way when driving. This is the drivers side visor which I tend to hit my head on and have to move my seat lower in order to see properly. I took it to my dealership and they told me it would be $300 to fix. That is ridiculous as I feel this is a faulty part that could be a hazardous situation if not taken care of. Recal may be in order to correct this issue.

5 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2003 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

Drivers side seat belt nylon webbing (actual belt portion) has started to severely unravel in several different places. I feel this is a factory defect in materials; however, local dealership where vehicle was purchased informs me that it will cost me $270 to replace this belt. Cost so high because the whole mechanism must be replaced. . . Not just webbing. I am a senior citizen on a fixed income & cannot afford to replace the belt @ this cost. I feel manufacturer should replace @ no charge since a defective seat belt on drivers side is very dangerous. I have been a long time Toyota customer & this is my 1st compliant ever.

6 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

The drivers side visor will not stay up flops around blocking full vision . This seems to be an ongoing problem with Highlanders and should not be an issue on a part with limited use and a vehicle this new.

7 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2002 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

I was in the front passenger seat. I put the car cigarette lighter into its holder and inadvertently pressed it in all the way. After a few minutes it flew out of its space, it was all lite up and fell to the floor of the car where it began to burn the mat. I picked it up and got a 2nd degree burn on my finger. We could not believe that it happened so we put the lighter back in the holder and pressed it in. It flew out again.

8 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

Brought my car into Toyota for "floor carpet cover and retention clips" and was told there was nothing wrong. I replaced the floor mats myself at a cost of $108. 00 plus tax. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/09/2010

Toyota safety recall notice. I received a safety recall notice from Toyota about floor mat interference with the accelerator pedal. While the pedal may get stuck on the floor mat, it is highly unlikely that this will cause a sudden increase in acceleration. Common sense tells you that if the pedal gets stuck, the vehicle will remain at the speed in which the problem occurred. This also is true for the alleged sticky accelerator problem. It is disappointing that the ntmvsa has not recognized this problem and is allowing Toyota to continue down this road.

10 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/31/2009

I have a 2007 Toyota Highlander that had mat entrapment--I had after market mats as none were given to me when I bought the vehicle--I reported this to Toyota corporation and had vehicle inspected at dealership and rep said there was no defect in my accelerator--the vehicle had accelerated and I hit a picnic table and 2 bird feeder and a fence in my yard before I got the vehicle to stop. I would like to know what is different about my accelerator as the 2007 is not on recall but I feel it should be--they did not explain that to me just told me that my floor mat caused this to happen--I realize that but I would like an answer to my question--I blew a michelin tire and have damage to my bumper--total cost--about $600 according to Toyota garage--no answer from them except to say this was my fault.

11 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/14/2009

While I was driving our 2008 Toyota Highlander (with 21506 miles) to the Toyota dealer for a tire inspection, the vehicle surged to approx 80 mph without accelerator pedal engagement. When I applied both feet to the brake pedal, it slowed the vehicle to approx 60 mph, but the engine continued to race out of control. I put the vehicle in neutral, but the engine continued to race. I put the vehicle back into drive and turned off the ignition. I eventually glided to a slow, difficult stop. No other vehicles were in the immediate area. After a 5 minute rest in park, I started the car and the engine raced. I immediately turned off the ignition. After another 5 minute delay, I started the vehicle again and it appeared normal. I drove the vehicle to the dealer and explained what had occurred. The dealer could not recreate the event and did not see any readouts indicating what had occurred. They explained it as a ect transmission that is common when the air conditioning is on. Given recent events, my fear it that the explanation given to me is not accurate. I called the dealer several times over the past 2 months to determine what my options are for recall and repair. They continue to tell me to wait for a floor mat recall notice from Toyota, and prior to receiving that notice, they cannot assist. I called the national Toyota service center 1-800-331-4331 to file an incident report. I explained the situation above, they gave me a case number . They indicated that our vehicle was made in japan and should not be part of the pedal recall. They also indicated that we should be part of the floor mat recall which will include a computer chip adjustment that will install a brake override to ensure that the brake pedal will override the accelerator. Give the recent events over the past 2 days, it appears that may not be working properly on other vehicles. Since August 2009, this situation has not occurred again. My fear is that it will.

12 Adaptive Equipment problem of the 2001 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/24/2001

I bought a 2001 Toyota Highlander in Aug 2001. The 1st time I had a problem with the gas pedal was about a month later when I went to pull in at work. I parked up by the building and put on my brakes and the car revved up and I put on the brakes and it did want to stop. I finally got it stopped and sat there and wondered what had just happen. I let it go as I did not have an explanation. Everything was find up to the year 2009. I was taking my mom and brother to the grocery and mom is 86 yrs and I parked in a handicap spot that had a pole in front where the handicap sign was. My brother was in the front seat with me and to my amazement when I put on the brakes the car revved up and I had to push on the brake real hard. I did hit the pole and jarred all of us. I feel like this car model should be looked into.
