There was no incident. When the brake malfunction screen displayed, I drove the vehicle to the nearest Toyota dealer in pueblo, colorado. I received the attached service message and picking ticket; 17june2025. It also needs new brake pads, rotor adjustment, and 5 new tires. Total~$6000. Way too pricy! I paid for the diagnostic test, and drove home carefully! the vehicle has been sitting in my carport since, and I am walking the city limits for all purposes. The 12v battery died mid-July, without replacement since. I live in la junta, 70 miles east of the dealer. So we're looking at 99,000 total miles as it sits.

I have owned my 2009 Highlander hybrid since I purchased new from dealer in July 2009. In mid December 2020 I noticed on two separate occasions that with my foot firmly on the brake pedal the vehicle would still be moving a few feet before stopping. No warning lights so I figured no big problem. In January 2021 a warning light flashed on for maybe 5 seconds regarding brake problem. On February 2nd I brought it to my local Toyota dealer to assess. They scanned it and didn't receive any dtc codes. I was advised that my front brake pads were at 4mm and should be replaced soon. I did that. Vehicle drove without incident until June 20th when several warning lights lit up. Abs, tire pressure, brakes and traction. The warning lights stayed on so I brought my Highlander back to my local Toyota dealer. This time I was told that dtc c1391 came up. Abnormal leak in accumulator, replace brake actuator and pump assembly. That would come out to $2901. 24. Toyota had issued a customer support program bulletin regarding the brake actuator and brake booster pump assembly. But for some unknown reason, given the dangerous condition a failure would present, that 100% coverage of replacement expired on December 31, 2020. Toyota is not making any exceptions on this matter. It appears that Toyota is putting their reputation as well as dollars and cents ahead of their customers.

Started complaining about brakes at 10,000 miles. The dealer turned rear rotors at 28,000 and installed new pads. Now at 37,000, the front rotors are warped also. Cannot be turned down. No coverage from the dealer. Defective rotors are my complaint. Toyota forums complain about theses rotors all the time. The vehicle shutters as brakes are applied.

On 10/30/16 I took my 2015 Highlander to a local Toyota dealer for warped rotors. They agreed the rotors were warped and since it was at 35,000 miles they replaced all 4 rotors under warranty plus 2 new brake pads which I had to pay for. I noticed the same issue in late may of 2017 and called to ask about this. They said "we don't warranty warranty work" and suggested I called Toyota headquarters. On June 21, 2017 I called Toyota and filed a complaint. I was told to take the car to a different local dealer, closer to my home, and they would inspect the rotors for a charge. On July 11, 2017 I did this and the service rep told me she noticed that the rotors were "blue" and she noted that they should be changed. The service manager called Toyota headquarters with this info but they refused to cover this, stating that this was normal wear and tear. Later that day I heard from the Toyota hq rep who repeated that Toyota could not cover this. On 8/7/2017 I filed a complaint with vermont attorney general's office. As of 10/10/17 this complaint is still not resolved as they won't cover the repair. The car is now at 63,000. This is a safety issue. Note: according to Toyota nation website many others have had these same issues. Below is the response from the dealer on August 24, 2017. I discussed this situation with our assistant service manager. She did contact Toyota to ask them to cover this repair and they declined. Their reasoning for this is that the condition of the brake rotors, I. E. They are blue, indicates a heat event. This usually results from heavy braking, braking while going downhill often or sometimes if the brakes got hot and then went through cool water. Both front inner brakespads completely warned out damaging both rotors badely, some metal pieces found on floor broke loose from both front rotors. Outside pads has 60% thickness left on it. Ended up changing both front rotors and pads costing $375. Mechanic said this may be a result of a faulty brake system. Talk to Toyota representative without any solution or response.

Brought the vehicle in for a routine oil and filter replacement. As dealers normally do, they also did spot checks on brakes, hoses, etc. The two front wheels had been removed supposedly to check the wear on the brake pads. As the mechanic was reinstalling the wheels, two of the lugs broke off. The service rep showed me one as he explained why the oil and filter job was taking much longer than expected. I studied the fracture face and saw typical fatigue failure with origin and progression features. It was quite evident the problem started much earlier than today. I only saw one broken lug, but the service rep said that there were two lugs that broke prematurely when they were reinstalling one wheel. This concerns me so I am giving this information to NHTSA. I have taken close-up pictures of the fracture face if you would like them submitted. To be safe, I am having all the front wheel lugs replaced on this vehicle. Agreed, this isn't necessarily a Toyota problem. It could have been caused by overtorque when I had the tires replaced. If it is a Toyota problem, you'll have other reports similar to mine. (I am a retired sr. Quality engineer familiar with accident investigation, failure modes, metallurgy, metallography, machining practices, threads, etc. ).

The car will not hold when parked on a steep incline. Not even in my driveway at home. Especially if there are people in the car because of the added weight. They adjusted it the first time and said it would be fine. That only lasted a month. Took it in again and they said nothing was wrong but they adjusted it more. Tech said they might have to charge me because it is going to wear out the parking brake pads. Never had some thing like this happen in any vehicle I have owned. It currently is not holding so I apply the brake to the floor and then put it in park. Not a good practice.

2003 Toyota Highlander 4. 0 have had serious problems with the brakes on this vehicle since I purchased it due to Toyota originally installing brakes that are too small for the size of this vehicle. Trying to get it to a stop is a problem and the brakes fail alot as well as the fact that they destroy the oem rotors and pads and I have replaced the pads several times as well as had the rotors turned twice and now need to replace all 4 rotors and pads due to this something really needs to be done to fix this issue per Toyota.

Consumer feels that the location of the brake/gas pedal are too close. This resulted in accidental acceleration while reversing.
Frequently when the brake pedal was depressed the pedal went to the floor, which caused the brakes not to stop immediately in a panic or emergency situation. Dealership indicated that this was normal for the brake system for this vehicle. Three different mechanics inspected the brake system, and determined that the master cylinder was not functioning correctly. The master cylinder needed to be constantly replenished with brake fluid. Also, the brake system had to be bled because air got in it. Dealership indicated that the brake system was designed for a passenger vehicle and not an SUV. Repairs were also performed on vehicle due to premature wear on pads and rotors, and on vehicle's front door weather stripping due to premature wear. Recall#01v228000. The brake problem had been a problem since purchase.
