1 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/26/2021

On March 26, 2021 when we started the vehicle, there were several indicators and messages that there was a problem with the braking system and that it needed to be serviced by a Toyota dealer immediately. Upon doing some research it became clear that Toyota is fully aware of malfunctions of the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump on this vehicle and communicated it to owners in a customer support program notification-zkc in 2019. In that voluntary communication, Toyota identified the malfunctions of the brake system components and stated that the cost of repairs was covered through December 31, 2020. However, since this problem did not become apparent until March 26, 2021 Toyota did not fully cover the cost of repairs. It is unclear why this known defect and malfunction have not been treated as a recall. There are numerous cases that have been documented online of brake failure on this vehicle as a result of the malfunctions of the brake actuator and booster pump some with catastrophic consequences. No one at Toyota has been able to explain why repairs are not covered after December 31, 2020 and indicate that it was apparently an arbitrary date. My assumption is that this was a deliberate effort by Toyota to limit their financial exposure with no regard for the safety of drivers and passengers. Hopefully the NHTSA will investigate this issue and require Toyota to notify all owners of this vehicle of the defect and potential danger associated with braking system failure and have Toyota recall the vehicle and make the appropriate repairs. The estimated cost for the repair is $2,700.

4 Brakes Failed problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/12/2020

Several warning lights illuminated, tire pressure, brakes, abs, traction, they all stayed on for a few minutes and then went off. The car seemed to be driving normally. This happened a couple times, it was not alarming, the first time the light illuminated was approximately November 12th, the lights stayed off for weeks and it happened again around December 11th, the third time, Jan 14th, I got the vehicle to the dealership. It turned out to be that the brake actuator was leaking and the whole brake system could fail. It seems hazardous and extremely dangerous that the lights did not stay illuminated to reflect the severity of the situation and not a loose fuse or tire pressure issue. I assumed that since the lights went off, there was no issue with the vehicle. It is a very costly part and repair and Toyota is aware that the part has been problematic. They have not notified customers of the issue so to look out for this dangerous issue. They had extended the warranty on the part yet gave no notice that the part was problematic and to be aware of the issue and take it in at once if the light ever comes on. It is a serious issue and it seems that more should be done on Toyota's part to ensure drivers safety. To top it all off the warranty expired December 31st, 2020. I got the vehicle to the dealership Jan 14th 2021. Toyota is making no exceptions to delays warranty coverage caused by the pandemic. It seems like they are putting money ahead of safety on more than one level and ahead of customers.

Intermittently during normal driving conditions, there exists instances where brake hydraulic failure occurs. 7 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/20/2019

While driving approximately 25 mph on a city street, the brake system failed entirely when attempting to stop at a red light. There was no previous warning that the brakes were not functioning. In the moment of failure, the abs warning system alert showed on the dashboard display. Eventually, the brakes began to work again, and I pulled to the side of the street and turned off the vehicle. No warning lights or indicators showed after restarting the vehicle, and the braking system appeared to be somewhat functional again. The mechanic we brought it to was able to replicate the problem in the same conditions, but is as yet unclear on what is causing the failure.

8 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/29/2019

Abs and vsc system warning lights came on suddenly for the first time while I was driving. I parked the car and it would not start. I was stranded and suddenly had a critical brake failure with no prior warning. My vehicle has low mileage at approx. 70,000. This is a dangerous failure which has been covered by warranty in previous models and is still a problem.

10 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

Since it has become colder in the midwest around November 2018, I can hear a clunk or a thunk kind of sound when I make a complete stop or put the car in reverse. The sound is coming from the back, the area where the brakes are, both left and right side. This is in my 2017 Highlander awd xle. I have addressed it with an authorized Toyota service dealer many times but nothing has been found by them. They adjusted the emergency brake shoes and lubricated the emergency brake parts, but nothing has fixed it. The sound keeps coming back. I have also filed a complaint with Toyota corporate headquarters. The case is now closed due to the service dealer stating the sound is not a defect and they have to basically wait for more complaints to take any action. I can hear this sound anywhere from 10 to 30+ times a day when I drive around in a city and suburban setting, where I am stopping at many stop signs and red lights. It is loud enough to hear over some low to medium loud music playing. It almost sounds like the emergency brake engaging. I am worried the brakes will fail or the emergency brake will engage without me setting it. I have small children in the car with me most of the time. This needs to be addressed.

11 Brakes Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/27/2018

I purchased a used 2007 Toyota Highlander hybrid less than 2 years ago and because I was not the original owner, I did not receive and recall notices or extended warranty coverage notices. Now my brakes are failing and it has to do with the brake actuator assembly that Toyota offered to repair free under their "enhancement" program. I was unaware of this because I am not the original owner and now the enhancement program has expired. Average cost of this repair is $2,500-$3,000 and I do not have that type of money and yet I need my car daily to work. At some point the brakes, as currently indicated on the dashboard and from the sound they are making, are going to fail, resulting in an accident. Their enhancement program was good for 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever came first so I am past the 10 year period. Why do they put limits on life and death safety issues with their cars ? I need the NHTSA's help. Thank you.

15 Brakes Failed problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/17/2017

The brake actuators make weird sound only when you hit the brakes. The car may be in a turned on or off position. All you have to do is press the brakes and there is a weird sucking and chirping sound coming from the brake actuator assembly. Talked to dealer and they did a brake fluid flush but that did not help. Toyota reimbursed the service charges but I think they did that to shut me up. The brake actuators can fail anytime and I am worried that Toyota has known this problem for a while now and is not fixing them. This is a serious issue and the faulty brake actuator assembly needs to be replaced by Toyota.

19 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

When applying the brakes there is a noise that comes from the brakes and it feels like the brakes are failing so I went to the Toyota dealership to find out the problem and they said that the brake actuator was bad and had to be replaced. The cost of the replacement was quoted at $3200. 00. I searched the web and found that this has occurred not just once but many times on numerous Toyota vehicles over many years. I also determined that even if I were to pay to repair this condition that it would reoccur do to the defect in the design of this part of the braking system. Why hasn't this been addressed and a recall issued?.

20 Brakes Failed problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

Have had brake actuator malfunction/failure for a very long time. Started with noises and has progressed to warning lights and almost complete brake failure. Have contacted Lexus bc it a rx400h and not a Highlander bit they respectfully decline to get involved. Had called over a year ago. Had catastrophic brake failure that almost caused an accident with other motorist and am now paying 3000 to have the brake actuator replaced that they have been told about for years and refused to fix and consistently remind me I don't service my vehicle at a dealership for normal maintenance. The previous owner never recieved notice or a warranty campaign and ultimately rid themselves of it because of the issue and price of the brake actuator to be fixed.

22 Brakes Failed problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/28/2011

I was driving my brand new (3 weeks after I bought it) Toyota Highlander v6 in a secondary down hill road when the brake system failed completely and the car started to accelerate downhill. Not being able to control it I ignored the "full stop" sign at the end of the secondary road and I continued in a flat main road where cars normally speed until I was able to put the shift into park and finally the car stopped with a lurch. The life of my son and mine were seriously endangered. The car was towed by the dealer and it is still there after they have replaced at least 2 parts so far. We paid almost $32 000 for a brand new defect free car but insetad they are going to give us the same car which is now undergoing major repairs.

27 Brakes Failed problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/16/2008

I received a vsc error code, on a 2008 Toyota Highlander, not the hybrid model, but a limited top of the line model. The vehicle starts to accelerate by itself & then when you slam on the brakes to try to stop it, it fails to stop. In order to avoid slamming into the vehicle in front of me & to the right of me, I chose to turn left hard & run into the concrete divider. This was the 2nd occasion that this type of failure has happened to me. The 1st time was on December 15, 2010 & I also chose to turn left hard & strike the divider instead of rear ending the vehicle in front of or side swiping the vehicle to the right of me. On the 1st occasion, none of the airbags deployed & because of that I ended up striking my head on the either the drivers side glass or some hard object and losing my short term memory. The vehicle & then crossed 3 lanes of traffic, finally off of an exit ramp & came to rest after striking a fence pole. The 2nd time it happened was on August 16, 2010. I also chose to strike the concrete divider as opposed to striking the vehicle in front of me or to the right of me. Then somehow I also crossed 3 lanes of highway & finally coming to rest after striking a light pole. The driver side curtain airbag did deploy this time so I did not lose consciousness nor did I lose my short term memory. It was at that point that I noticed that a 2nd error code also came up stating brake failure.
