2019 Toyota Highlander hybrid. Today exactly one year from purchase it stalled on a busy public roadway for the 4th time. With the 4 incidents in June, July, & sept 2020, the car, without warning 1. "powered down" almost immediately to a dangerous slow point with no acceleration in response to pressing gas pedal in the following locations: a high traffic major urban bridge(40mph); interstate highway(75mph); coming into busy city intersection(5 -10mph); country highway (45mph) 2. Power steering was slow and difficult. 3. Master warning light activated. Audible tone/constant beeping activated. "hybrid system malfunction. , pull over to safety, call dealer, check engine, pcs" , and multiple other warnings. 4. Within moments the car completely died (before I could seek legal and/or safe parking. ) safe parking required multiple attempts. In July (illinois) the car required towing off very busy interstate highway. Assessed as "no issues". Within one hour a Mini-series of sputtering, choking, stallings in city intersection, dealership then kept our vehicle overnight. More lengthy diagnostics "threw" fuel codes. Bad gasoline? today car should have been towed but Toyota roadside assistance denied my VIN & phone# existed in their database. Home dealership confirms I am, without doubt, in database. During hour+wait for assistance, dash cleared of all warnings w/ ignition. Home dealership advised driving to closest dealership. 5 miles. My car currently sits in a missouri toy. Dealership w/ fuel pump suspect. I was told repairs could take up to a week. 97 fuel pumps currently back ordered in parts system. 20,500 miles/all service plan requirements met promptly. I have all inspection forms/service receipts. No ability to upload documents now but would like to be contacted by NHTSA for more information and to share service documents.

I own a 2018 Toyota Highlander, me and my family including my 4 year old son were taking a drive up to nevada city. We live in California and when we got on the road and tried to come to a stop on the highway and the steering wheel and brakes started to shake. We decided to pull over and as we pulled over the car stalled, we put the car in park and tried to turn it on with no luck left it off for a couple minutes and still no luck an error came on that said low breaking power. We had received a recall notice so we called Toyota and they stated they would need to charge us about 200 dollars to check the car. Took the car in and they decided to keep out car until there is a resolution for the recall which they said could take 3 to 4 months. Just unethical for Toyota to charge us for a problem that is completely out of our control not only that but 4 months to fix a recall error is just ridiculous. Now we're terrified to drive the car especially when our 4 year old son in the car. Contacted Toyota manufacturer and they were really unwilling to help gave us a run around and we didn't come to a resolution about the problem. They didn't own up to the problem and we were left with more unanswered questions.

I own a 2019 Toyota Highlander, it has stalled several times during busy commute to or from work. I am so scared to drive this vehicle, that I refuse to drive it to any destination longer than 50 miles. I need this car replaced, I have three young children, and I paying for an unsafe, unreliable car. I would like for Toyota to replace this vehicle.
2019 Highlander purchased 12/2019. I guess I am lucky, mine has not stalled yet. Very poor throttle response. Taken to autio nation Toyota ft myers 3 times including having a regional rep there. He claims mine is operating within factory specs. Supposedly mine is not a part of the fuel pump issue. Not that it matters Toyota says the parts are not available. Factory rep says mine has 41 computers. What could possibly go wrong? yeh right look at this web site and see the similar complaints across the total Toyota line including Lexus. Warning if you have the lane departure feature (lda) be extra carefu. If the lda activates and yours is one with the lack of throttle response, it may end up moving you into another lane or off the roadway. It has happened to me. Acccelrater shifted wat down and almost put me in another lane. Luckily no other vehicles present how many body bags will it take to force the feds to act? OH I forgot. They are needed else where. Toyota wins y more like a thunderstorm. If you bother to scan this fed web site you will see all th all I know is to the car bucks, fails to respond to normal acceleration, or over downshifts. So far I haven't taken out any other vhicle ,person, or me. If your vehicle is equipped with the lane departure feature (lda) watch out if you trying to accelerate, mine lda activated, and almost put me in another lane. Luckly there wasn't another another car there. Read all the similar complaints on this federal website covering all models of the Toyota brand (Lexus included) with the 8 speed transmission and see nothing is being done by Toyota or the feds. I wonder if the feds need a body bag count to take action. Oh I forgot the bags are needed else where and Toyota will win.
Vehicle intermittently chugs and stalls at low speeds. Which results in poor fuel mileage. Vehicle has also stalled 3 other occasions without chugging and not in motion, all 3 times was while at a stop light or while attempting to turn. Looses power without engine mil light dealership indicated the hybrid system has overheated 4 times with no ability to duplicate. Vehicle also has had the stereo flip through numerous screens without being touched. At one point when it stalled the vehicle stated hybrid system inactive ,park safely, but it was in an intersection. Luckily it restarted and was able to move before an accident occurred.
I received a recall alert early in the year. There is not yet a fix for the low-pressure fuel pump. I have driven the car only a few miles since the notice and the description of the possible failure. I drive I-68 in maryland, much of it with 3 lanes and all up and down mountains. A failure on this highway would be very serious, quite likely fatal. A failure would mean that the car would stall and not restart. Speed limit is 70mph--life-threatening if the car were to be in the center lane going uphill. The car would have to be drifted backward downhill to remove it from the roadway. This is the end of April. This is an unacceptably long time to be without safe use of the car. I expect monetary compensation as well as extended warranty for lost months of inconvenience, fear and lost usage of the vehicle. We were offered an alternate smaller car which would be inadequate for our needs. Accepting the substitute would require that we turn our car over to the dealer where it would sit on a lot exposed to the elements. This is unacceptable. If the dealer would provide a satisfactory substitute, our stipulation would be that the Toyota Highlander remain at our home where it is garaged.
The vehicle stalled twice on me at a red light. No power to steer. This both happened at a city near washington DC. Had my battery and alternator checked . Both came back as in great condition. Almost got hit twice from behind cause of the stalling.
2019 Highlander xle loses power, unable to accelerate, & jerks and stalls in traffic. Bought at 200 miles, certified preowned. It is a nightmare vehicle. Accelerator has been touchy and jumpy at times, intermittently at slow speeds. First time it stalled it started to lose power put -put and chug like jerking and all dash and electrical on dash went out, unable to accelerate, then stalled out in road, unable to steer or control vehicle. This occurrence was after a longer period of driving. Second time it stalled out began to lose power, putter and chug, unable to accelerate applying gas pedal, getting no gas, vehicle dies out, unable to steer or control vehicle. This occurrence was after a longer period of driving. Third time was yesterday 8-8-19. Left work and about 5-7 minutes into my drive, started hesitating, losing all dash and electrical power and will not accelerate when gas pedal applied, then stalls out, unable to control the steering wheel again! almost got hit this time, man behind me coming fast and had to swerve into lane over to miss me. This car is going to kill me or someone by causing an accident if they do not get it fixed right. After the second stall it was towed into dealership and they were not sure but said fuel pressure was reading 22 and was supposed to be in the mid to high 50's. They replaced the fuel pump and it drove ok for a little while but I noticed the average fuel mileage going down from an approx in city 19. 1--20 to 17. 1-17. 3. Has never been so low so obviously the stalling and the replacing or the fuel pump are not the real issue. Fuel economy going down since replacement of the fuel pump and now another dangerous stalling issue. Car is at Toyota dealer now. They need to dive much deeper & resolve this very dangerous safety issue! I bought this car to feel safe and have reliable transportation and have neither. It really scares me.
Car stalled has happened more than 5 times at parking lot - gas station - home - restaurant - car wash car has stopped while driving on main street 1 time.
After vehicle has warmed up engine rpm speed drops to near 500 when brake engaged at stop lights and vehicle idles rough and attempts to stall. Shifting to neutral brings rpm speed back up and idles smooth again. Problem occurs daily over last two months. Vehicle is near new, 1750 miles. Auto stop start feature is not engaged. Taken to dealer who advised no problem found. Returning to dealer again for another try and hopefully better results.

Occasionally, at a stop sign/intersection or entering a highway if I have come to a full stop before proceeding the car will stall. I pressed on the accelerator and nothing happens. My wife and I have found ourselves in this predicament several times now and it is only getting worse. This scenario is very dangerous for several reasons, but the most important one is that my family has been inside the car when this has happened. We have had several scares now, because the car stalled on us as we were entering the highway. I have spoken to the dealer about this over the phone and both times that the car has been serviced. After they test drove the vehicle, I was told that this was normal behavior due to a delay between the computer and the accelerator throttle. Additionally, I was also told that Toyota is aware of this, but has not addressed the problem. This is extremely upsetting because my family is now at risk due to a computer malfunction. I urge the NHTSA to please look into this matter as more and more people based on internet searches are dealing with this same issue. I own a 2005 Highlander with 105000 miles and this has never happened. You would think that a 2016 model with all of its safety features and enhancements would be a pleasant driving experience? but, now that I owned the car for almost 8 months I am second guessing myself whether this was the right purchase. Once, again I urge the NHTSA to look into this and to anyone else out there that is experiencing the same issue, please speak up so that both Toyota and the NHTSA address this problem as soon as possible.

Upon entering into car after it had been parked I smelled gasoline. Wife said she had just filled up before coming home and perhaps spilled some. I got out of vehicle and checked and saw small puddle of gasoline where car had been parked. Moved car away from house and raised hood to vent engine compartment. I removed front skid plate/panel to find leak and allow further air circulation. I power cycled key and saw fuel leak again. After further investigation found were main fuel line was misting onto engine and surrounding parts. Leaks were coming from middle portion of hose and not at connections. Next day I had my car towed to the dealer. They suspected rodent damage. Upon inspection there was no evidence of "chewing" or other type of external damage. A replacement line was ordered and installed. I was charged for the repairs. I have kept the original fuel line for further investigation. Dealer had no explanation of the cause of the failure. I feel blessed that we did stop when we did otherwise it would of resulted in an gasoline fed engine fire because of the gas spraying onto the exhaust and other hot engine parts in a confined area.

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Highlander. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled as all the dashboard warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
The primary issue of concern is regarding the vehicles valve springs. As a result of the valve spring which was in place, the vehicle in which I drove, stalled multiple times while in motion on a highway, before I was able to get it checked. In order to rectify this it cost over $2,000. 00 in repairs. This issue is of grave concern, as a faulty valve spring, if it were to happen on a highway, could result in the death of a driver, passengers, and other vehicles. This issue is similar to the 2010 valve spring issue which affected Lexus vehicles. In that 2010 issue, Toyota admitted fault and recalled issues for 2006 to 2008 Lexus models. Given that the issue happened to other brands owned by Toyota the dot should see whether the issue is more widespread, and whether my vehicle falls under this issue as well.
Driving car and it stalled then mesage came on which stated check hybrid engine. Took it to shop and was told would cost $9,000 as it was the inverter. They said my VIN was not on the recall list for the recall of 2006 Highlander hybrids. Had the power module replaced as recall in 2012 but why wasnt my car on recall list for the inverter?.

I purchased a used 2006 Toyota Highlander from a fernelius dealship in michigan in April 2011 - it was in mint condition with 56210 miles on it - thought I had made the best deal ever - then the day before thanksgiving while driving it overheated. Thought I had blown a head gasket only to find out that the thread bolts on the short block had stripped out and leaked raditor fuild everywhere causing it to overheat. At that time the mechanic told me that I needed a new engine. Contacted the dealership and they told me too bad I bought a used vehicle if I wanted to tow it to them they would look at it. I than contacted Toyota corporation only to be told pretty much the same thing, since I wasn't the orginal owner they weren't going to help me either. So now I'm stuck trying to find an engine because the dealership can only offer me one with 58000 miles on it installed for about $7,000, and from what I'm reading on the internet they have this problem when the engine reaches right out of the warranty at 60,000 miles. I can't believe that both the dealship and corporation won't stand behind their product and fix the engine or at least offer some assistance. Why should their faulty engine part be my problem? now of course being just a working stiff and retired military money doesn't grow on trees and I don't have another vehicle, so I have to get it fixed. I won't buy another Toyota again since they don't stand behind their own product, but I'm stuck with this one for now.

The failure and the current mileage was 29,500.
I went through a toll booth, car began to lurch, lights all went up, and the car stalled, highly dangerous, but managed to get to side of road, apparently the inverter in my 2006 Toyota Highlander, 102,000 miles on it, was defective, it was replaced free, but had to pay labor and for rental. . But I really could have been injured severely.

While my 2001 Toyota Highlander was in operation the engine bolts pulled loose causing the engine to seize and be destroyed. The car was stopped at a light at the time and had it been in operation on the freeway could have caused a serious accident. The engine is destroyed and a new engine would cost $7000. I believe that there have been numerous incidents involving engine bolts on Toyota cars and trucks and that Toyota has always blamed other things and not addressed whether the bolts are defective or have not been installed properly. There are various references on the internet of customers having problems with the engine bolts on Toyota vehicles. . Toyota has no explanation for what happened to my car. I believe it may be the installation of the bolts or the quality of them.
