1 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/23/2020

We recently purchased our Highlander and it has a little over 4,000 miles. Today while driving down the road at about 45 mph, the car just lost power and the check engine light came on. 1. Check engine - reduced engine power 2. Secondary collision brake system malfunction we had to park and wait for the Toyota dealership to come and tow it to the service center. At this point I don't know what was wrong or why it just cut out while driving. I am very concerned and can only hope Toyota can address this or replace the car.

3 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/03/2020

3 times over the last month, while I was driving my vehicle, the car suddenly lost power while I was driving on the highway. All the dashboard lights flashed on, check engine light and warning lights illuminated. The vehicle lost power, the accelerator was not working, and I was just barely able to pull the car over to the side of the road. Car turned off and was able to turn back on, now with illuminated check engine light and check hybrid system warning light illuminated. This is a big safety issue as the car is losing power in the middle of the road while my foot is on the accelerator. The first time this happened I was able to pull a couple codes from the code reader. Codes were: u0001 & u0100 the second and 3rd time this happened there were no codes coming up on the code reader.

5 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/11/2020

2008 Highlander hybrid limited check engine light came on and showed code p0a1b - drive motor 'a' control module, the code was cleared manually and the check engine light went off, the next day the light came back on after driving about 3 miles then parked. The next day the light went off on its own as we took it to the Toyota dealership and has not been back on since driving it there and back, the dealership said they drove around a little and the light never came on, we brought it home and have driven about 7 miles without the light coming on. According to the local Toyota dealership and corporate Toyota there are no recalls for our VIN but it is showing all signs of the inverter assembly recall that affected 235,000 vehicles in the recall. Toyota quoted the repair at $9000+ and even though it has the symptoms of the recalled vehicles they will not fix it because it is not on the recall list and there is nothing they can do. The repair cost is more than the value of the car.

6 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/31/2020

Although my car was new (only 11 months old) and less than 5000 miles, it had shut down completely while I was pulling out of a parking lot. I had to get it towed to the nearest Toyota dealership overnight. They told me it was my faulty fuel pump and that they had never seen that happen to such a new car before. Currently I have my check engine light on (my car has less than 6200 miles on it) and it only goes away when I put in a full tank of gas. After I drive about 2 miles, the check engine light turns on again. I am terrified my car engine will just die once I'm on the road, or worse, the freeway. I am unable to drive this car without that fear. Please see culver city Toyota records for proof of my fuel pump problem and engine dying. They also have record of my towing to that dealership the next day on sept 1, 2020.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

9 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/05/2019

First incident occurred in Dec 2019 and then again in Jan 2020. While driving engine lost power and vehicle began lurching forward and back uncontrollably. After pulling over engine shut down. Thankfully we did not cause an accident. Check engine light came on, also said reduced engine power and traction control off. First time dealer said it was bad gas. Second time they tested fuel pump and it was producing 5 psi. Way below 50-60 psi norm. Now our vehicle is parked waiting for Toyota to develop a fix for their fuel pump. No idea how long that will take. Our car is part of the almost 700,000 Toyota recalled. Toyota used to mean quality, not sure any more.

10 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/16/2018

When driving my Highlander the following error messages appeared, error keeping the start button pressed will cause an emergency stop. I dismissed this. Then it popped up a message that car cannot drive while brake and accelerator are pressed simultaneously. I lost ability to accelerate so tried to pull of busy road, pressing the brake pedal restored acceleration. Then when I stopped in traffic or at lights the car shut itself down and had to be restarted. These error messages kept coming on while I drove to the dealer. I switched off the car at the shop and it wouldnt repeat the problem, no codes have been recorded by the vehicles computer because the check engine light never came on. Toyota and the dealership want to wait until it happens again. Since it happened before, also while it was driving I am uncomfortable as it is a safety concern. I don't want it to happen on a busy highway. I believe the intelligent power module of the car is shorting out and causing the car to go into failsafe mode and shut down creating hazardous driving conditions.

11 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2017 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

While driving up the I-5 grapevine at 72 mph the car suddenly slowed without any warning to under 20 mph. The check engine light turned on and the dash said awd system disengaged or error or some similar message and to take to the dealer. I was barely able to accelerate to get off the road. I pulled off, turned the car off and back on, and it started running again. I'm lucky I was not rear ended.

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/31/2015

I purchased a qualified pre-owned 2008 Toyota Highlander sport from rice Toyota in greensboro, nc in February of 2013. Since that time, I have properly serviced the vehicle and retained all service records. On or about March 31, 2015, while I was driving home from work on I-40 (65 mph interstate highway), the engine in my Highlander suddenly stalled and the check engine light came on. I coasted into a rest area (luckily) and was towed to a service station in greensboro. A complete diagnostic was performed and it was determined that the engine failure was due to a faulty engine valve spring. Every mechanic I have spoken with have indicated that a valve spring should not break on a 2008 Toyota with around 100k miles. I searched online and found that Toyota has recalled hundreds of thousands of certain Lexus models, including models from 2008 with the same 3. 5 liter v6 engine as is in my Highlander, for faulty valve springs that result in sudden engine stalling. Rice Toyota has refused to provide any assistance, as has Toyota corporation. Further, Toyota corporation has refused to provide me with any information regarding the manufacturer of the valve spring in my vehicle and/or any indication if the same valve spring was in the recalled Lexus modes. I have seen class action law suits filed against Toyota for concealing issues with valve springs. This defect can be very dangerous as the vehicle stalls suddenly and without warning. I need assistance to motivate Toyota corporation and rice Toyota to correct a clear design and/or manufacturing defect that caused a potentially dangerous engine stall in the middle of a major interstate highway.

18 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

While driving down the expressway with the family (50mph), check engine light and traction control suddenly turn on and flicker on and off randomly. Engine power hesitates. At the stoplight, check engine light continues to turn on, and off randomly, as well as traction control light. Engine appears to be stalling at times, and rpm bounces between 500-900. Acceleration when pressing against gas pedal results in uneven acceleration. Pulled vehicle off to the side, turned engine off, and examined vehicle. Examined vehicle and do not see anything suspicious. Turned vehicle back on, and check engine light with traction control off. Moments later, lights turn back on. Limped vehicle back to residence via local roads. Continued to experience intermittent on/off check engine light and traction control. After arriving at residence, parked vehicle and performed additional examination. Noticed burning smell at rear brake shoes, possibly from traction control holding on to brakes. Will bring car to dealership on 08/05/13 first thing in the morning.
