The incident happened while I was driving my family north on interstate 81 at 1:00 am. We were traveling at about 75 mph. In my driver-side mirror, I noticed what looked like a mist getting kicked up behind the car and covering the rear window. In the dark, I couldn't tell if it was water or some other liquid. The road was dry so my wife and I planned to get off on the next exit and inspect the car, we had children in the car, and stopping on the side of the road did not seem safe. While we were looking for the next exit, I kept looking for indicator lights to come on and checking the temperature gauge to see if I could discern if there was anything wrong with the vehicle. No indicator lights came on and the temperature gauge stayed within normal levels. Then after a few minutes, about 5-6 minutes, the engine seized. All of the indicator lights came on and the display said there was a problem with the vsc system. Thankfully the car continued to roll and I was able to pull the car to the side of the road and turn on the emergency blinkers and called for assistance. When finally we got the car towed to the nearest Toyota dealership we were informed that the oil coolant line had "blown" and our engine had seized from a loss of engine oil. Two weeks before this incident the car also displayed the vsc warning so we had the car towed to beaman Toyota where we paid 1818. 60 to have, among other things, the water pump and drive belt replaced. Knowing we were going on the above trip we had all the recommended repairs performed so we could be confident in the car during our trip.

The coolant pump pulley broke and engine got overheated and stopped on a major highway and had to be towed. The vehicle has less than 60k miles on it. Dealer tells me that both the engine and water pump have to be replaced and would cost over $9,000.

The contact owns a 2010 Toyota Highlander. While driving approximately 60 mph, a rattling noise was heard underneath the vehicle. The failure occurred without warning. The dealer replaced the water pump, which was rusted and fractured. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,973.

My car began overheating at 140k miles. Took it to a mechanic and had the water pump and thermostat replaced. The car overheated again a week later. Took it back to the mechanic and he told me the head gasket was blown and had to be replaced. When he went to replace the gasket he found that three head bolts were stripped on the block. The cylinder head bolts separating from lower part of engine block caused a coolant leak. This is obviously a manufacturing error. This car was bought brand new and has been driven by the sole owner. Had oil changes every 3,000 miles and never had an issue before now. Please place a recall for this defect. This is not the owners fault, nor should it be their responsibility.

My wife started the car in the morning to drop the kid to school which in within 2 miles of our home. It was cold day of winter. She heard a loud noise from the front part of hood when she drove about 1/2 a mile and was worried with the kids what is that noise. Any how after that the car had start making squishing noise from the front of the hood. We took to Toyota and they said water pump needs to be replaced. I have also read some other people reviews online regarding the water pump of Toyota vehicles. My wife called the Toyota motor CO for warranty and they said, even that is not a part of power train and it is not covered under warranty. So we are ending up paying extra approx $650. 00 to Toyota for the replacement.
My car started heating up as I accelerated onto the highway. I saw the dial going into the red zone. I pulled off the highway and was towed at my expense to hilltop richmond Toyota. I was told that afternoon that the head gasket and the water pump both blew out. I now have a $2,500 repair on my hands. After researching this I found that this is happening to many Toyota owners and that was verified by the dealership person as well. Toyota is using bolts that strip which cause the head gasket to fail. There are also several reports about a foam piece in the block that also fails as it is faulty as well.
My wife was driving our 2006 Toyota Highlander. She drove approx 1/2 mile from our house at an average speed of 35 mph when the temperature gauge suddenly went past the red line. We had our car towed to crown Toyota where they tore down the engine and found water pump leaking and head gasket leaking oil . They removed engine head and found warped block and but head was okay. We then towed the Highlander to a private mechanic to have block replaced and we were informed the block was not warped but instead the bolts on the engine are stripped/defected. Toyota wants $5,400 to repair vehicle by installing a used engine. Toyota refuses to help with the cost even though it appears to be a manufacture defect and has already charged us $654 to diagnosis the problem and did not even reassemble our engine. The car was no longer under warranty at 68970 miles. We have not yet repaired the problem.

My son was driving our 2006 Toyota Highlander. He drove approx 2 miles from our house at an average speed of 35 mph when the temperature gauge suddenly went past the red line. He drove our car approx 2 miles back to our house. We then had it towed to savannah Toyota where they checked the engine and found the head warped and the bolts stripped . I went to savannah Toyota and told them that I had just had the car there for an oil change a month prior. At the time of oil change, service writer noted under the hood that he thought that maybe the water pump may be leaking as there was fluid on the upper part of hood. There was no notification of any problem with the water pump. A month later, the above overheat condition occurred. When we were informed that the engine was burned up and the engine needed to be replaced at a cost of 5000. 00. We had the vehicle towed to our regular mechanic and was told that there was nothing wrong with the engine block, just the head needs to be replaced at a cost of approx. 2200. 00. Savannah Toyota did charge us $600 to check what caused the problem and if the engine could be saved. We were told that the engine block bolts were stripped and could not be re-installed. After dis-assembling the engineto evaluate the problem they did not even reassemble our engine. The car was no longer under warranty at 70,000 miles. We have not yet repaired the problem carhas been parked since 3-20-11 to date 11-22-2011 .
The water pump went on my Toyota highland. I looked it up online and found out the water pumps are faulty and will make a sound like there is gravel in the motor. I had Toyota fix the problem under warranty, but I looked online and found that other people have the same problem. Should be looked into due to being bad pumps.
