Car dome light was left on and battery died. Battery was 3 years old so I replaced with new battery and car started and drove short distance. Couple of days later I attempted to start car but it would not start. Checked battery and it was good. While attempting to start car, I get messages about contacting dealer for the problem along with brake warning etc.

While driving on the highway, the lights in the vehicle all began flashing to check hybrid system. I was unable to use anything but the brakes as the gas pedal would not even work to decelerate or accelerate. I was able to veer out of traffic to safety. I had one other passenger in the car and we were scared for our lives as the whole car just shut down and could have been involved in a serious accident. Eventually the battery also died and we were stuck on the road at night waiting on a tow truck. We had the car towed to a Toyota dealership and have been working with Toyota and corporate Toyota for the past 6 weeks on a resolution. We were told the inverter needs to be replaced and the cost is $9000. We were also told by the serviceman at Toyota that the car is not worth fixing as it still will not work properly after the part is replaced as it could have lead to transmission problems. This is a faulty part that was recalled in some of their 06 and 07 highlanders but not others. We were not part of the recall. I am without a vehicle and am still waiting for help. This part should be fixed by Toyota completely as it is faulty or Toyota should at least reimburse for what the car was worth before the incident.

Multiple battery failures requiring jump starts: seven (7) times since I bought this SUV in Feb 2011. Three times there was a possible known cause for the battery drain: the passenger vanity mirror light was left on for 15 minutes, 2 hours, and an unknown length of time. None of these three episodes was significant enough to cause a completely dead battery in one that has been evaluated as in excellent condition. I drive in the mountains all winter. Getting stranded in an isolated place can be deadly due too exposure, risk of collision on single lane snow-occluded roads with 2-way traffic and fast snow plows. Other Toyota Highlander Hybrid owners have had the same problem. Twice now the dealer has said there is "no problem" with the battery. I am pursuing correction through the local Toyota customer relations manager and will follow through with Toyota's customer experience center and the California dispute settlement center if a prompt local solution is not achieved. . We have a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. There are a number of minor but annoying problems: 1) battery dead in morning 4 or 5 times for no apparent reason. 2) after turning off engine and opening door, buzzer occasionally goes off for no apparent reason. 3) some radio stations pick up a lot of static when brake pedal is pushed. 4) dvd carousel player picks up errors when attempting to play disks four or five. Wrote a letter to Toyota in 2007 regarding some of these issues but got no response. These problems could be related to the electronic issues we have recently been hearing about.

2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Consumer states issues with battery. The consumer stated when he went to start the vehicle, the battery was dead. The tow truck driver informed the consumer he needed a new battery. When the consumer arrived to the dealer, he was told there was nothing wrong with the battery and they refused to put a new battery in the vehicle. Less than two months later, the consumer went to start the vehicle and again the battery was dead. The dealer again, denied his request for a new battery. The dealer informed the consumer he needed to do more highway driving and that would take care of the problem. The consumer stated he did more highway driving, but again, the battery died. The consumer was denied a new battery for the third time.
