My 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was just deemed totaled by the car dealership (newburgh Toyota) and my insurance company (liberty mutual), because of excessive rodent damage. It turns out that the rodents were attracted to the wiring because toyoyta uses eco-friendly soy-based coating on their wires which attract rodents!! rodents chewed wires, the wiring harness, plugged drainage holes with their bedding thus causing water damage, and ruined the hybrid batteries. The damage was estimated at more than $12,000, which of course Toyota would not cover under warranty. The vehicle would not start unless the battery was unhooked to "clear" the computer system. When it started the error messages/warning lights on dash were lit up everywhere, indicating it was unsafe to drive. It was taken to the dealership where a service tech stripped the interior and discovered rodents nests, droppings, water, and lots of damage. Photos attached. Parts alone for the repair were more than $10,000, and that did not take into account additional diagnostics or labor costs. As you can imagine, this has been a giant headache!.

No prior history of hybrid problems during previous 65,000 miles. On Monday morning, the Highlander Hybrid started up fine. After warming up for 5 minutes to scrape off snow, shifted to drive and began driving. Car shut down after about 12 feet. Car would not restart. Warning message appeared on display, indicating hybrid system problem. Aaa came, put on flatbed, and took to nearest dealership. Dealership was unable to determine cause or fix problem following 6+ hours of troubleshooting by their hybrid expert yesterday. They indicated it could be something in the inverter, but that it may not be covered by existing extended warranty, and that we may want to contact our insurance company. Awaiting call back. After researching on safecar. Gov, this sounds similar to recall 13v396000 for 2006-10 highlanders, and 14v053000 for 2010-14 prius. We hope Toyota does the right thing for us, and for others with the same design or manufacturing issue.

I try to start the car and it did not start. All light was on including vsc/hybrid system car was towed to Toyota dealer. They bleed the brake and erased the code. Drive the car for the next 2 days. Car failed to start again all light on vsc/hybrid car was towed to Toyota dealer. Diagnosis is failed inverter ask $8357. 82 for repair because the recall is not launched and I call Toyota motors canada tell me they will not repair recall for USA vehicle . Toyota motors USA will not authorize for repair in canada of safety defect (Toyota safety recall 13v-396) also refusing to repair in the USA if I bring the car to Toyota car dealer in new york state because recall not launched. The car have been towed to my house.
We were driving on the NJ turnpike. Suddenly, the car stalled and the steering locked. Luckily, we just started the hour long drive and were on the slow lane and was able to glide the car over safely to the shoulder. The check "csv" and "check hybrid system" lights came on and the hybrid battery showed no energy. The car would not start and was towed to the closest Toyota dealership. There were no prior warnings about battery errors or problems before completely stalling. It is understandable problems will arise, but with no warning and a car stalling on a major highway, the incident could have been extremely dangerous.
The vehicle did not start when the key was turned. The dashboard flickered, many lights were lit and then the flickering stopped after a few seconds and the check engine light came on.
When starting after stop at the end of a freeway exit ramp a loud noise was heard in the front of the vehicle. The vehicle then lost all power and I was able to coast to the side of the road. The check hybrid system and check vsc system error lights were displayed and the car would not restart. The car was towed to a Toyota dealership and diagnosed with failure of the inverter. My car was not included in the 2011 recall for this problem. The cost of repair was quoted as $8000 and after speaking with Toyota corporate they offered a $1500 customer appreciation rebate. Based on online research this seems to be a known problem with this model. Another local Toyota dealer said they have repaired 4 of these in the past week. Toyota can not assure us that the problem with this inverter has been solved or if the new one will be more reliable. This is a major safety concern. The car had always performed well and gave no warning before this complete failure. If my car had failed 60 seconds earlier I would have been on I-81 going 70 mph surrounded by tractor trailers and would probably be dead. Have not decided whether or not to proceed with the repair.
The computer on 2006 totota Highlander Hybrid won't allow engine to start. 12v battery will not start auto until a small charge is connected to battery I have had it in the dealership 3 times with the same problem. The first time was when the vehicle was less than 1 week old - was told that I must have left a door open, and nothing was wrong with it. Second time to the dealership - same problem - same response, again, they said nothing was wrong. New battery was installed 1/1/11. Still having the same problem - car will not start-get stranded and car will not start. On 2/22/11 I took vehicle back to the dealership, along with documentation on service bullentin 01605, nhsta item number 10015806 - serviceman said that they (the service department) do not pay any attention to any of the nhsta bullentins that I would have to pay to have a diagnostic test. No lights left on or accesories left on. Heater, radio, seats, are turned off.
I made a right hand turn and was accelerating, heard a pop and the car shut down. I coasted to the side of the road and the car wouldn't start. The check hybrid system light came on and then the check vsc light came on. The car was towed to the dealership. Dealership said the hybrid inverter failed.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. While the vehicle was parked, the vehicle would not start. The contact had the vehicle jumpstarted . The failure occurred between three and four times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the battery; the battery had been placed four times in five years. The vehicle was at the dealer. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 108,000.
