The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, there was a hesitation and the vehicle surge forward before coming to a stop. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact became aware of TSB 0059/23, NHTSA id number: 10244133 (electrical system, air bags, service brakes) for 2021 - 2022 Toyota highlander. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with brake failure. The contact was informed that the brake actuator needed to be replaced; however, the dealer confirmed that the year, make, and model was not included in the TSB. The dealer attempted to update the brake actuator module according to the TSB; however, the update failed due to the year the vehicle was manufactured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000.

I replaced my brakes after several warning lights and codes kept popping up on my dash. Had the rotors turned. But when I returned to driving my car after I thought it was fixed the brakes would all of a sudden just go out the hydraulic part would go completely to the floor. The car would make a high pitched noise and then no brakes. Took it to Toyota in clinton TN. Said my abs brake actuator was failing. Would cost me 2200 dollars to fix. This certain part on your car is supposed to last you a lifetime. I dont have money like that now it was take me a lifetime to save up for the repairs. Very scary. This would happen to me randomly as I was driving no matter where or how far the trip I was taking. Didn't know if I was going to be able to make it home sometimes. You just never knew when. Sometimes it would be fine and others it would be absolutely scary.

Intermittently, while driving down the road, all of the dash lights come on, there is a high beeping sound, and the brakes stopped functioning properly. The brakes either need to be matched with extreme force or the brakes will slam by barely touching the brake pedal. Toyota acknowledges that this is an issue and offered a warranty extension to owners of this vehicle. I purchased the vehicle after the extension was offered and haven't had issues until recently. I am concerned for not only my safety but the safety of my family. I have been a Toyota fan for all of my adult life. However, after dealing with this issue and being quoted $2000 to fix it, I would offer advice to anybody or not to buy a Toyota or at least not a Toyota hybrid. Buyer and driver beware!.

Vehicle hybrid/engine shut off while driving. Various warning lights lit up including vsc, hybrid system, and check engine. I was forced to change lanes with the car off but moving at about 40 mph and pull over on a side street. I as able to restart the vehicle and continue my drive. The following day, even though the check engine light and all warnings had cleared, the car turned off again while I was driving and breaking at a red light. The car failed to properly restart after this second incident. The vehicle was towed to a Toyota dealership which specified that the issue is the hybrid inverter. The vehicle only has about 81,000 miles and according to Toyota a recall had already been performed on the intelligent power module for the inverter in 2014.
First a loud ringing happened and car would not stop. We have serviced car regularly, brakes are new, but car does not stop. Trying to brake at the intersection, stop light and highlander would not stop. Put us in danger almost led me into accident, was told it was the abs system and that Toyota is aware of this. This is a huge safety design issue and expensive fix Toyota needs to fix their design flaws. There is not physical contact or wear and tear on the part for it to fail. Ms. Deborah huston at Toyota stone walls the process to get this resolved. She claims Toyota is not aware of these issues, but the NHTSA records show customers have been complaining for a long time and that they know.
Vsc light came on and the car would not drive. Towed to Toyota and had it diagnosed. The poa80, p3020 hv battery inoperative/shorted. The vehicle was in motion on the highway when it happened.
2006 Highlander Hybrid, check hybrid system, check vsc light, brake and abs light all on permanently and my brakes aren't working. I was fortunate noone got hurt. . It was really dangerous when you press the brake and it doesn't stop. . . . From what I read abs accumulator which cost 3k+ to replace and the hybrid inverter which cost 5k+ to replace. Nhtsa please issue a recall on this issues.
While driving my vehicle on the northbound I-405 at about 4:30 pm on Friday afternoon, the vehicle's electric engine shut-off with no warning or explanation. Dash lights were still lit and vehicle was in motion. Could not get out of traffic safely except with remaining momentum from the no. 3 lane of traffic. Electric engine would not power-up. There were no fuel or battery problems. The technician's test narrowed the problem to the DC inverter which was previously a recall issue. This recall doesn't appear to have been resolved, though the dealer claims it was. Thank you.
While driving 40 mph, my dashboard lit up with brake brake malfunction, abs chevk abs, and check vsc system. All dash lights lit up also. Drove to the repair shop and had codes run. No codes were present. This is related to the c1391 code that has a recall on 06&07 highlanders, and 08 camys. The front right of the engine is making a clicking sound every 20 seconds from the brake stabilizer. Just prior to this for the last 2 weeks, the vehicle has had difficulty obtaining a ready light. Battery has been pulled and bench tested, and all connections were checked. It would appear that in the last two months many 08 owners are presenting with this problem, with a range of proposed repair expense from $3,300 to $6,500. Seeing as this is a known problem with the 08 camry, resulting in brake failure in both camry's and highlander, this ought to be a recall for both vehicles.
I was pregnant and driving with 2 small children when the lights on my dashboard came on about vsc and a loud ringing happened and then I tried to brake at the stop light and they were so difficult to push I barely stopped in time to avoid an accident. Was told it was the abs system and that Toyota is aware of this but put stipulations on an extended warranty rather than recall so it's too late for most to get fixed and be covered. This is a huge safety issue and expensive fix Toyota needs to stand behind.
While driving on the highway 65mph the vehicle lost all power, the check hybrid light was flashing, was able to pull over and stop. Was able to restart vehicle and drive 110 mile home.
Car was parked in driveway and was stationary. Warming car up to get rid of frost on windshield. The car started on fire - total lost. 3 to 4 feet flames coming out of engine.
I was driving in 295 I hearing a sound coming from the daskboard and a light appeared stated need to check abs break system by dealer. I said to myself I'll have it check when I got home. I was doing 65 miles per hour, I was pressing break there were no break, pump the break several times, no break, I pressed the emergency break and thanks to the lord the car slow down and eventually stop. Apparently dealer asked me $5,500. To fix this issue and I don't have this type of money, and I'm still making payment on this vehicle can't even drive; I believe this type of issue should be a recall. I need help please!!!!! ribertm@yahoo. Com.
Abs system failed at 137,000 miles , mechanics stated this should never happen,I was driving when abs brake light came on and continues to stay on, and on 09/17 my abs and brake light is on,and when I push brake petal down , my car does not stop. Unable to get car to come to a stop. I recently change my brake pads in August and everything was working perfectly untill septamber 20th 2017.
Car seemingly running fine. Vsc light, abs light and brake malfunctiom light come on out of nowhere. Told to tow to dealership. $3450 to replace abs actuator. Same part has been recalled in other years and models but not 2008 Highlander Hybrid. This repair is 1/10 the cost of the original purchase price of the new car. Car has 116,000 miles on it.
Faulty break system this would be 2 time to get fix in less than 1 and 3 months.
Vehicle was in motion, departing from parked lot. Vehicle lost all drive power, and instrument panel warning lights turned on. After shutting vehicle off and restarting, warning message to check brake system, and check hybrid system illuminated. Also all warning indicators activated in the guage cluster panel. Thankfully, we were not driving fast when the vehicle became disabled, otherwise it could have been fatal. Had vehicle towed to nearest Toyota dealership, where they advise "the power inverter assembly failed. " Toyota refuses to help, even though this exact problem has been recalled for other VIN numbers matching my vehicle. These are unsafe conditions and proves that Toyota has not done a thorough job of recalling all affected units.
I am about to purchase an 06 Toyota highlander 4x4 hybrid. I received information that the 06 Toyota Highlander Hybrid inverter has serious problems, and that the cost to fully repair this problem is huge. I would like to protect myself from potential problems (like this) by not purchasing any such vehicle. I would also like to know (if this issue is valid) whether dealerships have the ability to be informed of any such vehicle problems, before they sell it on their lot?.
I experienced issues right after buying car new. Car unable to read sid card, gsp not working, multi-media screen white wash (white) and unable to read, keeps trying to restart 'bluetooth', auto wiper system does not work, seat belt warning system does not always work, forward collision button on steering work does not work, blind spot warning does not work all the time, hybrid engine does not always start, rear auto lift gate does not always open.

The hatch continues to fail even after they replaced "defective" part. The batteries had to be replaced because they had failed. On 3/2/17 I was sitting in the driver seat with the car in park with the engine running and suddenly the driver seat moved all the way forward, then the back straightened completely and the side view mirrors adjusted all the way up. I placed a call to the dealership at 2:51pm, was told I'd get a call back. I drove the car home with my adult daughter. Radio was off. When I was stopped in either traffic or a light we could hear a motor trying to start. I made it home safely. I had the car towed to the dealership and was advised that since they could not replicate the problem it didn't happen. They returned the car to me without any documentation of a complaint.

I was driving to an off ramp when my 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid just stop in the middle of a very busy traffic! it almost caused a terrible accident. I had it towed and the Toyota dealership diagnosed it as an inverter converter problem and will cause me $11000 (yes, eleven thousand dollars) to replace it. This appear to be an engineering defect fault. Of all the warning in place it seems to inform the driver, such as the abs light, low gas gauge, low air, oil maintenance warning, why not the 'inverter problem detected, bring your car to the dealer now?'. I feel that Toyota is being irresponsible in designing a car that just simply stop in the middle of the highway or on any street without warning. This error is super dangerous and can cause innocent lives and Toyota should take responsibility in correcting the wrong instead of hiding behind the scene. I did some research and found that there are other such problem but their customer service said that my vehicle id number is not on the recall list. Who include my vehicle on the recall list anyway? certainly this is a problem after all it is affecting vehicles 2006 to 2012? please help.
Many electrical problems, fuses repeatedly blowing out, power lift gate not closing, many different error message appearing on the screen for no reason, vehicle went into accessory mode while driving resulting in a loss of power. ## VIN passed ## Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2017 ##.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. While driving approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled and the instrument panel warning indicators flashed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there was water in the hybrid battery compartment and the compartment needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
While driving on a major highway and in the fast lane going approximately 75/80 mph my 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid died and failed to drive. The panel on the dash had a red ! exclamation point, and said check hybrid system and check vsc system. I was able to navigate my vehicle to the right breakdown shoulder to call for a tow. Tried to start my vehicle several times and it would not start, but the hazard lights and instrument panel continued to light giving evidence my new 12v battery was functioning properly. Called Toyota motor USA and asked what recalls they have listed for my vehicle and they asked for my VIN. They told me the electrical inverter assembly was covered for my VIN. They gave me the number of a tow company to call and told me it was covered by Toyota and I'd have a rental waiting for me. I had it towed to my local dealership as directed, they fixed several other recall issues but not this one, so when I drove off the lot the car died again. I managed to start the vehicle and drive it back across the highway into the dealership. After speaking with Toyota corporation USA again, they apologized and said they misinformed me and that my vehicle was not part of that recall. However, they paid for my tow and for my rental for 5 days (thus far). My case number given from Toyota corp is 1607053248. I read online there is a class action suit regarding this issue. Karl and irina gaal vs. Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , inc. , a California corporation. Via atty mike arias. Toyota's customer experience has put in a request for me to speak with a supervisor and the Toyota dealership's gm in my area is also working on this issue as it's still pending.
The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a total loss of power while driving 35 mph. As a result, the vehicle was no longer operable. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 175,000. The VIN was not provided.
On June 15th, 2016 while over 200 miles from home on a family trip with my pregnant wife and 2 year old son in the car driving down a 2 lane highway with a semi truck behind us at approximately 45 mph constant speed our 2008 Highlander Hybrid brakes locked up, a warning tone sounded, several lights lit up on the dash including brakes, abs, vsc, (((!))), and /!\, and the car stopped completely in the highway with the engine still running. The lcd displayed several alternating messages about the brakes, abs, and vsc and also about needing to have the vehicle checked by a dealer. As our car was about to be smashed by a semi truck I pressed the gas pedal to the floor. The brakes were completely locked up, but fortunately the car inched forward at less than 5 mph with wide open/full throttle to pull off of the road before the semi truck could hit us from behind. The situation was terrifying. I have taken the vehicle to a dealer. They do not know the reason for the issue. They want $500 to trouble shoot and generate a repair estimate. It sounds like the abs actuators are commonly $3,000. I have noted many similar problems on the NHTSA website for the 2008 Highlander Hybrid and other Toyota hybrid vehicles in which the brakes, abs, and vsc lights illuminate and braking issues occur.
Driving on an interstate received a check hybrid light then the engine powered down and then shut down. Was able to pull off interstate without crashing. Had to have it towed to Toyota dealer where they said it was the ivs, inverter system, which overheated and shut engine down. The vehicle was recalled in 2014 for bad soldering in the ivs system. Car has only 72,000 miles on it, but over 8 years on warranty. So I am waiting on Toyota to decide if they are going to assume responsibility for $9,500 repair. I am now aware of lawsuits and complaints on the inverter system of the hybrid highlander.
Abs light on with warning, brakes performing poorly. The abs actuator assembly and break pump failed requiring replacement with a cost of over $3764 in repairs. The Toyota camry hybrid had millions of recalls for the abs actuator but the Highlander Hybrid was currently not on recall. I own a 2000 Toyota 4 runner with over 200,000 miles and never had an abs issue. This car is only 6 years old and shouldn't require this problem so early.

I purchased a new 2008 Highlander Hybrid. Though I had no problems, in November 2013, the inverter was recalled at 79,000 miles, and replaced. We had no problems with the car for the next 22 months. On September 6, 2015, the car stalled and could not be restarted. We had the car towed 55 miles to the dealership. Investigation of the car over 2 days was unsuccessful in discovering the cause. On September 9, I asked if it was the inverter. I was told it was not. The service manager had contacted Toyota, who recommended taking apart the hybrid system to look for “a shorted wire”. On Thursday, September 10, I was told that they found a wire, would but the system back together, and would take it for a test drive. On Friday, September 11, the car stalled and died on the third test drive. At this time, I was informed it was the inverter. The service manager agreed with me in feeling that since Toyota had taken out an inverter that was seemingly working fine, and replaced with one that failed in less than 2 years, that Toyota would “take care of me”. On Tuesday, September 15, I was informed that the cost for the part was $8800, and that the “regional service/parts manager,” offered to pay half of the cost for replacement. I was not happy with this offer, as it still left me with a bill of several thousand dollars for a part that failed in less than 2 years after the recall. At this time, I have not accepted the offer. I was told to call customer service. I was informed that because the regional manager had made me an offer, there was nothing else she could do. My frustration is that Toyota recalled my vehicle for the inverter. And I believe a bad inverter was put it the car instead. This current inverter, that Toyota told me to put in the car, lasted approximately 29,000 miles and 22 months. This seems like a far cry from the expected life of an inverter.
I was travelling 45 mph, when a car in front of me suddenly stopped. I had to brake hard and my car stalled. I felt a thud, went to accelerate and realized my car had no power. I had to put it in park and restart the car. My car had a recall in 2013 regarding possible stall due to heat possibly causing a defect in the hybrid computer board. I took it in and this was supposedly fixed. This is the one and only time my car has stalled, but it was scary because I had multiple cars behind me and I could have rear-ended. I have taken my car into Toyota to be examined.
While driving home from work in normal free-flowing traffic conditions on the freeway, several lights came on the dash indicating brake issues including vsc, abs, skid, parking brake light. Continued to cautiously drive home, brakes seemed ok. Had our non-dealer mechanic look at the brakes all were fine and had recently been replaced. He could not find a brake issue. Took to the local Toyota dealer and one code came up c1391 "abnormal leak in accumulator" and was told I needed a new brake actuator at the cost of $3273. 00. Diagnostic cost $138. 00. Additional information on diagnostic paperwork from dealer says, "check for dtc's found c1391, check for fluid leaks, could not find leaks, check accumulator pressure voltage (3. 5 v), depressed pedal 4-5 times accumulator pressure drops below 3. 0 v, recommend replace brake/abs actuator". Other notes, some part of hybrid system seems to be cycling every few minutes. Over the years, when braking, there have been times where they "jump" or don't grab during brake pressure and after reading have found this complaint with other owners. I see that the camry and the Lexus have both had this part recalled/replaced by Toyota and wondering why, when this is likely the same hybrid system and component, that Toyota will not step up to the plate and offer this replacement part for owners for free or at a discount? the other vehicles have had accidents as a result of this part and Toyota should step up to the plate on the Highlander Hybrid.
My wife and I were travelling on I-95 (southbound) towards richmond, va. My wife was the driver. We were steadily travelling at a speed. . . Between 65 and 70 in the left lane (required speed limit). All of a sudden, with no warning, the panel lights started blinking and the power to the car was shut off. My wife was screaming because she was not able to control or effectively apply brakes. She tried and pulled car off the road barely and we pushed it off to a safe side. This could have resulted in a serious accident if we were travelling in the middle lane. The car was left overnight and towed to Toyota dealer. The dealer called back and gave a quote of $10000 because the hybrid inverter have to replaced. I mentioned the recall on the inverter. The dealer said the recall does not cover my issue. There is a recall on your website -what action or recourse do I have. The original owner of the car replaced the inverter at 16200 miles. Evidently all the 2006 inverters are defective. My question is this ---why your department is Toyota to get away with such a serious defect?.
On 12/02/13 the brake light and vcs system light came on. The warning light also went on and a beep noise inside the cabin, brakes does not function (breaks not responding). I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership. According to the dealer codes (c1241 low or high power supply voltage, c1256 accumulator low pressure, and c1391 abnormal leak in accumulator) must be replaced the actuator assy, b part no. 4405048190. Actuator was replaced on 12/28/13 at $1,495 with tax for $ 1,600 and labor cost of $333. 84. Ust be replaced. On 05/25/15 again the brake light and vcs system light came on. The warning light also went on and a beep noise inside the cabin, brakes does not function (no break). I took the car to an authorized Toyota dealership for a diagnostic and I pay $64. 20. Again they mentioned that for a second time the actuator assy, b part no. 4405048190 needs a replacement. I ask for the guarantee and only was valid for 1 year. Diagnostic trouble codes report (abs/vsc/trac), codes (c1252 break booster pump motor on time abnormally long, c1256, accumulator low pressure, c1391, abnormal leak in accumulator). I think that there is an electronic problem with the 2006 Highlander Hybrid and they do not know what the cause since is in a 6 years period the actuator assy was replaced and less than 1. 5 year again the same part (actuator assy) needs replacement, current price is $2,000. I cannot use the car the brakes are not responding and I can have an accident.
Engine mechanical ~|~check and report. . . Check engine light and vsc light on dash, . Found inverter pump not working properly ~|~replaced inverter water pump.
