In a stationary position, as soon as I turn my car over my engine will be at a higher rpm than what it should and it wont run as good as it should. Its harder on shifting into the next gear.

Numerous times while driving, regardless of speed (sometimes on the highway at 75 mph, others when pulling out from a stop to cross a busy intersection), the vehicle seizes and I lose control of all acceleration and braking mechanisms, while the engine revs and the car slows to almost total stop, with my only hope of swerving into a ditch to avoid being rear ended by the cars and massive mac trucks behind my vehicle, impossible to avoid colliding on the narrow steep rural roads. In the course of one mile, today specifically, the vehicle convulsed and seized four separate occasions, where I could only turn my blinker on and hope people could go around me. I long considered this issue related to slippery road conditions, because that's what it feels like, though experiencing the terror of losing complete control on a hot sunny, dry day last summer put the severity of this issue into perspective- the driver needs to be in control of the vehicle and the full operator of every function to prevent the vehicle from becoming a deadly weapon. This vehicle inhibits my ability to prevent harm. In trying to diagnose this issue, I have spent tens of thousands of dollars, and the vehicle still remains unsafe. On 4/9/18, I spent $2,065. 29 to replace wheel bearings for the second time in under a year and a half, as well as serviced the emergency break, purchased new tires yet again, and rebuilt the entire transmission. Back on 11/20/17, the vehicle received brand new lf wheel bearing and brand new spark plugs for $535. 29 to cure the power issue, to no avail. Only 8 months earlier on 3/30/17, I spent in excess of $1200 to service the struts, shocks, rear brakes, break pads, rodars, brake callipers, and rear emergency break, and still the issue persisted. The engine, wheels, and brakes of this 2007 Toyota Matrix continue to impede my ability to keep the people on the road safe.
On several occasions while city driving in July 2016 my 2010 Toyota Matrix vcs light began blinking, both the skid light and the engine light came on and the acceleration had little to no response. though it has not resolved the cause of the problem, I was able to reset the system so the lights are now off. My vehicle will then accelerate and work for a period before repeating the symptoms. I don't know if this issue is a program error or a part defect. Based on the error codes when I took my vehicle in for service (Aug 2016) a certified licensed technician replaced the original ecm module with one that was purchased at a certified Toyota dealership and programmed it. I had to take my vehicle back in for service this month (Aug 2017) since this same issue reoccurred. Fortunately, it was still covered under the parts/service warranty and a second ecm module from the same dealership was installed and programmed. However, after getting a tank of gas today, this happened again as I pulled away from the pump! and yes, my cap was properly secured. I sent an email to Toyota to ask how the company is able to resolve this issue for me since this may be the fourth one installed in my car if I count the original one. I am very concerned that my vehicle will fail while driving on a highway between two semi trucks causing serious injury or death to myself and/or others. I have read that other owners of this make/model vehicle have had similar experiences; and that there was a recall for this problem on older models. (2005-2008 Matrix hatchback due to engine stalling issues) if this is not a recall problem for my year/make/model, it should be. Please note that I have had this happen several times and at various speeds.
My Toyota corolla Matrix 2006 has a ecm under recall. When I bought this car from previous owner , I did not know that car was serviced under recall and ecm was replaced in January of 2011. In October of 2013, car has 54k miles and check engine light (p2716) is on. The transmission diagnostic was done and it shows that car has malfunctioning ecm. Transmission was rebuilt but not by Toyota dealer. Toyota dealer told me that my car has replaced ecm and doesn't qualify for any other ecm replacement. Now the car has 106k and still the same problem p2716 and ecm is malfunctioning.

Only 94,000 miles, fully dealer maintained, 5 speed manual transmission. Traveling at expressway speeds and loud screeching/banging from transmission. Was able to drive 6 more miles to dealership, but moved to right lane and went slower. Still was able to shift, lower gears weren't engaging properly and car started dying on the road. Dealer diagnosis for $100 is that it needs an entire new 5 spd trans and clutch assembly, although clutch seems fine. I've driven manual trans for over 40 yrs. This car never even had a clutch repair. Research on the web indicates that this is a known point of failure that Toyota has chosen not to fix and the potential danger of having this transmission blowing out at high speed could have caused a major crash on the highway had I not been skilled at getting the car into a safe area.

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota Matrix. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the third and fourth gears were not getting any oil and tearing the bearing and transmission apart. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Car moves forward smoothly but doesn't move in reverse gear.
I was driving to work one morning and I heard a loud grinding and whining sound coming from what sounded like the engine. I came to a red light and got out to see if I could see anything out of the ordinary but saw nothing. I then got back in and put it in gear to go and nothing I would let out the clutch and it wouldn't move. I tried to put it in reverse to move it out of the street and when I would let off the clutch it would pop out of gear it wouldn't stay in reverse. I had to get it towed and found out that it was my transmission. I did some research and found many people with the same problem. Evidently Toyota made a bad design with the 5 speed transmission and one of the bearings dose not get lubricated and burns out falling apart and ruining the entire transmission. Toyota claims that they know nothing about this and will not fix this.
My son was shifting from 1st to 2nd gear when there was a loud popping metal sound; he took the car out of gear, coasted out of harms way and then got the car towed. My son said that it was dangerous and unexpected. We had just had our mechanic change the oil and test drive the car last week after putting on new tires. The car was diagnosed with needing a new transmission. This is the 2nd transmission that has been replaced as defective on this car. Am a single mom with multiple jobs and cannot afford to pay for a billion dollar companys' mistakes. . (when providing a service or product to the pubic that costs money, if I make a mistake I admit it, correct it, am sorry and make it right at my expense).
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle had a very slow throttle response. This was a recurring failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing were the technician stated that the vehicle was in a recall and that the contact needed to go to a Toyota dealer. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. Kc.
Prior to incident, vehicle ran and shifted fine. Vehicle was never used for towing or other extreme use. Transmission fluid was changed at these mileages: 31,669; 61,023; 92,012; and 105,330. Vehicle was otherwise well-maintained, and driven with care by experienced users of manual transmissions. The first three tranny fluid changes done at Toyota dealership. On Jan. 1, 2012, Toyota Matrix (2003) , w/manual 5-speed transmission had sudden, severe failure on tollway. Roadway was clear. Vehicle did not hit anything in the road to precipitate this. Vehicle was just starting to decelerate for toll booth when sudden, harsh, grinding, metal-on-metal sound began. Car was then unable to shift into first gear, and shifted into second with difficulty. Vehicle was pulled over to side of road immediately and towed away. An independent transmission specialist removed & disassembled tranny. Diagnosis everything in 5th gear is broken. Fifth gear literally broke. Pinion shaft & everything housing ring gear is also broken. Apparently 1st through 4th gears look ok. Transmission re-build is advised, using Toyota factory parts. Estimated cost $3,100. In addition, I had vehicle towed 45 miles from rural site of failure ($160). And I had to rent a car to get home from failure site ($225+). I still must return to fort wayne, in to pick up repaired vehicle when ready. I have now read of widespread tranny failures in Matrixes. Toyota dealers and toll-free number personnel admit no knowledge of such issues. But, every independent source I've consulted acknowledges these drivetrain issues. Since these failures are so common, Toyota should take responsibility. A recall, or at least Toyota admitting and taking financial responsibility for this is in order. I loved my 1989 camry, but no longer have any trust in Toyota. Nhtsa, please help us. Thank you.
While driving, the car seized up and locked - dead in the middle of the road. Luckily we had taken side streets and not the freeway, where we would have surely been rear ended. My 8-year-old was in the backseat. Mechanic is saying a gear blew out and tore through, melting part of the transmission core. We already replaced clutch at 80,000. Car is not salvageable. This is very dangerous. We sat (unable to push the car, it was locked up - 6 people tried) in the middle of the street, a few feet from the intersection - nearly hit several times, with flashers on until tow truck could come. This is not the first report of this - it needs to be made public so people can get their transmission looked at and fixed before someone dies.
The car would not shift beyond second gear (automatic transmission) and not go into reverse. Got it towed to my garage and they are in the process of replacing the entire transmission.
I noticed a chirping noise from the engine. My husband took the Matrix to a Toyota dealer who advised us, upon inspection that the bolt that holds the lifter arm hadsheared off inside the engine. We are extremely fortunate that this did not result in an injury accident whilst traveling at highway speeds!
the service manager said he had only seen this happen before when a belt was replaced. The issue has not been resolved since the dealer and Toyota seem to feel that it is not their problem. The dealer quoted $2200+ and advised that if they cannot drill the bolt out, that the short block would need to be replaced.

My transmission had been racing off and on for a couple of weeks. The car just didn't feel right. I went to make a left turn out of my street and my car just stopped moving. I was in the middle of the road and nothing would happen when I stepped on the gas pedal. It turns out my transmission died and I had to spend several thousands dollars to have it replaced. After 8 months my check engine light is still on and everything I try doesn't work. I've replaced oxygen sensors, speed censors, etc. I've put more money into this car in the last year than I should have. I see that other people have transmission problems, too. I can't imagine whey this hasn't been addressed by Toyota yet.
Transmission went out in 2005 Toyota Matrix.
After reaching 94,000 miles mark like what some other Toyota Matrix owners experienced, there was a harsh in the transmission when you shift to reverse and the check engine light is on.
Driving down the highway our (03 Toyota Matrix, manual trans), (north bound I-45 conroe, texas) the car abruptly started a thumping slapping sound. From the frount end. Asap! pulled to the side of the road, stopped and turned the car off. My husband arrived, to figure out the problem. He had me turn the car on without starting and pushed the vehicle. The thumping, slapping sound is coming from under the engine. To be continued.
They need to issue a recall immediately -- my 2006 Toyota Matrix has been hard shifting with the check engine light on but I was unable to get it serviced because I'm unemployed. It has 90k and the dealer says I must pay out of pocket for the repair, $1000-$1300 because there is no recall on it yet. Had I known there was an issue with it I would have brought it in -- as it is I had to learn about this problem in the newspaper yesterday! I am afraid now to drive it that it may stall at a high speed as described in the newspaper!!.
The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Matrix. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the spark plugs and coils needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 76,000.
The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Matrix. While driving approximately 65 mph on normal road conditions, pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal followed by harsh shifting and excessive vibration. The check engine warning indicator illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were 82,000.
On October 3, 2008, while driving my 2006 Toyota Matrix I had to accelerate rapidly to merge onto a busy street. I immediately smelled a odor coming from my vents of burning wiring. My check engine light came on. I pulled over and made some calls to service stations and the Toyota dealership. Was advised to take it to the dealer. Did. After investigating the issue for several days they decided my ecm was bad and replaced it. With the recent Toyota recalls, I finally decided yesterday that I should check into if I am involved. My vehicle is Toyota certified and they do have record of the ecm failure to my vehicle. I also wanted to report it to you folks, just in case it is in fact the computers that are faulty. It is unknown to me whether the replacement computer they put in my car is a 2006, or what year ecm it is. My ecm failed immediately after rapid acceleration and my vehicle is not on the recall list.
I own a 2003 Toyota Matrix 5-speed with 75k miles on it. Serviced every 5k miles by the dealership until 60k, and has had regular oil changes and all manufacture suggested maintenance. Purchased new by me from Toyota & scion of lake city in seattle. On 6/17/2007, I was driving on state route 520 through east king county (divided, limited access highway). The car suddenly began making a loud high-pitched noise, then lurched to a sudden stop. I was able to pull off the highway but if I hadn't been right next to the exit when the noise started, I would have frozen in a lane of traffic moving at 60 mph. I had literally 90 seconds to deal with the sudden loss of the drive train, and absolutely no advance warning to any impending mechanical failure. Currently, Toyota is reviewing whether they will extend the power train warranty (60k/5year) to cover my car.
My 2003 Toyota Matrix had a failure in the rear main bearing of the manual transmission. The cost was $1800 to rebuild the transmission with new bearings. The problem has occurred again, at 133,000 miles, due to design defect. The transmission oil does not properly reach the rear main bearing, which causes failure.
As I was driving to work on December 28, 6:50 am I gradually felt my car slowing down so I tried accelerating with no success! when I looked if I had forgotten to lower the safety brake, I checked my board and saw a check engine sign so I pulled of to the gas station (lucky there was one when this happened and no traffic). I called for a towing and turned of the car. When the towing guy came, he tried my vehicle and nothing seemed to be wrong except for the check engine sign that was still up. . . When I went to the garage, my car was scanned and the po607 error was found in the computer's history! there obviously is a problem with the accelerator on my Toyota Matrix 2006 and there is no recall for that problem which is not normal either! this is a car I bought on August 2010 from a popular dealer so its second hand and I'm pretty sure this is not the first time such a problem occurs with it.
2003 Toyota Matrix xrs transmission problems, slipping gears or clutch while under load, recurring problem for the duration of owning the car. It is very unsafe on the highway as it does not get up to or maintain speeds. Filed a complaint with Toyota with no response. Toyota said there was no problem with it when I took it in to get looked at, but it was slipping the whole drive home and since then. I believe there is a definite problem with the transmission and I am not the only one that believes this, how many people must complain or does someone have to die for them to take some action?.
Clutch began slipping at 35000 miles while still under warranty. Dealer claimed there was no problem and no adjustment required. Clutch continued to get worse. On subsequent trips to the dealer, they repeated that there was no problem and that the clutch was normal. An independent shop told me otherwise. The slipping continued to get worse until by 75000 miles it was undrivable. Then the dealer said it needed a clutch and that the wear was normal. I have driven manual transmission cars for 40 years and never encountered such a short lifespan on a clutch or a more unresponsive dealer. I have service records indicating that the dealer was notified about the problem within the warranty period and on more than one other occasion and that they did not adequately inspect for this issue.
