My car started making a weird noise. When the clutch was pushed in, the noise would stop. 3 weeks later I had to go to work so I got on the highway and the noise was getting louder and louder. My front wheels locked up and my transmission shot me out of gear. A car almost hit me which would of cost my life. I will never buy a Toyota again. It costs $2000 to fix. Hopefully you guys do something before someone gets seriously injured.

6 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 11/14/2010

Manual transmission failure in a 2003 Toyota Matrix. Mostly highway miles, maintained regularly at the dealer. Noticed a noise and took it to the dealer and they said everything was fine. A few thousand miles later, there was a high pitched whine out of fifth gear. Upon stopping and restarting, pretty much all the forward gears were grinding, popping, squealing. Repair at the dealer was quoted $2500 for a used transmission and $3200 for a new! about half the value of the car.

7 Transmission Noise problem of the 2005 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 11/11/2010

I owe a Toyota Matrix 2005, which was purchased on 11/2004. The car currently has 23,280 miles and has been routinely serviced at westchester Toyota since its purchase. Before bringing my car in for service to westchester Toyota on 11/11/10, the check engine light had never come on and my car was not generating the current vibrating noise. I am not qualified to determine whether wt could have intentionally or inadvertently caused the damage to my car, but I consider the possibility that the damage to my cars transmission could have been caused by them. Based on what the service manager , mr. William vesey, indicated during my meetings with him, the transmission may had been damaged /malfunctioning all along while the car was still under warranty but the damage/malfunction was never detected because the original ecm on the car may have not been able to detect the damage since the ecm was faulty itself. For this reason, when the ecm was replaced on 11/11/10 due to the recall, the new ecm was able to detect the problem with the transmission and generated the transmission error code. Since the ecm was recalled after my warranty had expired and its malfunctioning most likely prevented the detection of the transmission error, I belief Toyota should be responsible for replacing the transmission. In addition , the transmission also appears to be a faulty part which may be recalled in the future based on the technical service bulletin provided to me by mr. Vesey. Westchester Toyota should be responsible for replacing the transmission, free of charge including any labor and parts charges. Toyota motor sales USA should authorize and cover the charges for the transmission replacement. The earlier recall of my cars engine control module (ecm) would have allowed for the detection of any transmission problems while my car was still under warranty.

8 Transmission Noise problem of the 2004 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 08/15/2010

My 2004 Toyota Matrix xr with manual transmission has suddenly displayed severe mechanical noise from the engine/transmission area. Smog technicians wouldn't take liability to run engine for smog tests to register for the coming year, so is now registered as planned non-operation until I can get the car fixed. Googling "Toyota Matrix transmission noise" or "Toyota Matrix engine noise" leads to several sites in which too many owners are either experiencing complete engine loss due to "oil sludge problem" or total transmission loss due to "admitted transmission bearing design flaw". I will not drive this car again on the roadway due to the possibility of sudden and complete loss of transmission function at any time. This car is a great design for functionality, but I am totally dismayed and frustrated that at 120,000 miles, the car is off the road for serious engine and transmission flaws that appear to be very common, considering I bought Toyota for the reliability that we all know so much about. I have kept up on the oil changes since they were pre-purchased for 5 years when I bought the car, and have kept fresh after the 5 years expired. Very disappointed with the fate that this car has presented me, and the costs that I will have to incur to get it back on the road.

12 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 08/26/2009

My 2003 Toyota Matrix has a manual transmission. A bearing in the transmission started to fail (noise) at 80,000 miles. This type of failure is common for both the Matrix and the pontiac vibe (identical car). Luckily I had it changed before any accident occurred. Neither Toyota nor gm are providing any customer support despite numerous complaints regarding the 2003 manual transmission.

13 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

After 200 mile round trip, noticed a grinding noise when accelerating. Took Matrix to dealer, who told us the bearings in the transmission were bad, and needed replaced. 2003 Matrix, 115,000 miles (mostly highway, we have a long commute to work) bearings replaced and clutch work done for $2063. When asked about this, was told "sometimes things break".

14 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

Grinding noise began, shortly thereafter the transmission failed. I've replaced the transmission twice already and cannot afford to replace it again. The car now sits as I continue to make payments on it.

15 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 03/09/2009

2003 Toyota Matrix manual 5 speed transmission has completely come apart due to being built with bad throw out bearings. Loud rattling noise began 6 months ago even though the transmission and the entire vehicle has been maintained flawlessly. Two weeks ago, on March 9, 2009 my boyfriend was driving on the 15 freeway going north when the car began to make a horrible rattling noise. My boyfriend pulled the car over to safety off the freeway and took a look. He knew it was the tranny, he didn't need to see anything. . . The first clue was that it would not go into 1st or reverse gear at all. We had to get it to a place that we could park it legally, so he started it in second gear and the car wailed and whined and sounded like metal was breaking apart as the car literally limped it's way the entire short ride. Warranty good for 100,000 miles, but my car is out of warranty at 105,000 miles. Toyota will not acknowledge the fact that the entire 2003 Matrix line is experiencing this issue, and will not even do anything as a goodwill gesture. A brand new tranny from Toyota is $4000+/-, and the problem will most certainly happen again - as I have seen many, many people attest to. A rebuilt transmission is less $. . . Toyota needs to be held accountable for this. My car could have been involved in an accident due to this failure on the freeway, to say nothing of the fact that it's very scary and unsafe to leave your vehicle on the side of the road, as well as breaking down in the middle of the night.

17 Transmission Noise problem of the 2004 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 06/15/2008

I purchased the vehicle used in 2007 with 15,000 miles on it. Within a year the transmission went out. Got this repaired by the dealership and within a year the transmission went out again. I have been doing research on this model year Matrix to see if it was just my car doing this, but it looks like there have been other people with 2004 Matrix that have the same problem. What happens is parts of the fly wheel or clutch dysfunction. It makes the car stop and it makes a grinding noise. It happened once while I was on a remote section of highway and the other time I was starting my car in the morning to leave for work. My car has close to 70,000 miles on it now, but as I stated previously, it happened at around 20,000 miles the first time, which is unusual for a Toyota, or any car for that matter. Parts were replaced by the dealership both times, but I'm scared it's going to happen again. I do not trust this vehicle to drive over extended periods or miles.

18 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 11/09/2006

Purchased used 2003 Matrix in oct 2005, paid for quality guard plus deluxe through Nissan dealership where I purchased the car to cover mechanical problems. By April 2006 it was missing gears and car just died. Took it to Toyota dealership after calling Nissan because I was pointed there. Toyota had it for 5 days fix it supposedly then November 10th, 2006 transmission gave up on it again needing it to be towed from friends place to home. Noises heard under the car before it stalled. They fixed problem before with remanufactured trans. But problem recurred. Being shuffled back & forth now that I am claiming for what I paid for with quality guard plus. Toyota don't have quality guard, Nissan does but my car is not a Nissan car. Should have called before they will cover anything such as towing and car rental. Too much red tape and hassles in asking to provide coverage I paid for and only one phone line 1-800-888-5245 that places you on hold for 30-50 minutes, talks to you briefly then place you on hold again.

19 Transmission Noise problem of the 2005 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 10/30/2005

The contact stated that transmission mad e a thumping noise when approaching a stop. He suspected it was the sound of the transmission changing gears. Also, there wa s vibration that followed the noise. This was an intermittent problem. He took the vehicle to a dealer. The dealer could not determine what was causing the noise. No repairs have been made at this time. Updated 09/16/09 updated 09/17/09.

21 Transmission Noise problem of the 2003 Toyota Matrix

Failure Date: 05/01/2002

Own a 2003 Toyota Matrix-1st owner of this car. This car was purchased with 9 miles in it. When it was first purchased within 2 days there was a noise coming from the transmission bearings. The vehicle was taken back to the Toyota dealer where purchased and the technicians said there was no noise. The noise never went away and the dealer just ignored it-never fixed it. Also, the back seat belt would get stuck for no reason, this was also brought to the attention of the dealer techs, but also "nothing was wrong" up to this date, the seat belts keep getting stuck and my kids use it that way. Another defective thing about this car were the sensor daylights, once the car was turned off, the lights automatically would go on and of course the next day the battery was dead. This was brought to the attention on the dealer and finally, they decided to fix something of this car. I was told that it was a defect from the manufacturer.
