13 problems related to brake abs warning light have been reported for the 2008 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that when the vehicle was turned on, the break made a noise and the abs light illuminate. The contact called the charles Toyota (860-889-8375, located at 500 w thames st, norwich, CT 06360) and was told that there was no recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and was told that the extended warranty expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000. Fe.
While driving, attempted to press brake which went to the floor and all abs warning lights came on immediately. I was forced to quickly press down the parking brake to stop the vehicle. There were no warning signs that the braking system was damaged or faulty. Luckily, I was able to stop before damage to propert or human injury occurred. After taking the vehicle to the dealership to be assessed, we were informed that the brake actuator system has failed. Toyota is aware of this potential problem with the Prius as they offered an extended warranty covering it. Unfortunately, we were never notified of the potential problem or warranty and are now outside of the parameters to have if repaired by Toyota. The warranty extension expired appx. 10 months ago. After researching several reputable sources, it is apparent that this is a significant safety issue on a defect that Toyota is aware of however no recall has been issued as of yet. How many crashes, injuries &/or deaths will have to occur before something is done? this is not a normal wear and tear problem. This is a mechanical failure with no warning that could be disastrous for the owners of these vehicles.
Abs lights came on as I started the car and warning signals also. The vehicle was in a parking lot as I was preparing to drive when the signals came on. Here they are: brake, (!) abs, vsc.
The abs warning came on and we took it to the dealership for diagnosis. Apparently there was a "warranty enhancement program" attached to this car for this specific problem, the brake actuator assembly". However, even this is a known manufacturing-defect, Toyota is refusing to pay for this service because they reasoned that this has fallen out of their warranty dates, which included 2 types of coverage: primary coverage ended 12/31/2017 and secondary coverage for car less than 10 years old from the first use or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first. According to Toyota, the first use of my Toyota Prius is 10/13/2007, and 10 years from that date is 10/13/2017, which came before even the deadline for primary coverage. This "warranty enhancement program" is for 2004-2009 Prius. You would think it will cover at least until the last manufactured car of 2009, but that was not the case. Also, the dealer and the manufacturer both stated that they can't fix it unless you actually have the abs light turned on and it warns about the issue. You would think if that light comes on, it will be very dangerous if you are driving 60 mph on the freeway and you can't brake! Toyota definitely did not think so. The repairs I was quoted for this particular problem is $2800 + tax, which is expensive and I can't afford to pay for it. I feel ridiculed because this is a manufacturing defect and it is not something related to wear-and-tear. Toyota acknowledged that this is a manufacturer defect and the reason they refuse to pay for this service is because it fell outside of the "extended warranty period". We did not even receive the notice to begin with; I found this out on the internet and apparently, a lot of people have this problem with their vehicles and Toyota either dragged out the timeline of repair so that it will surpass the deadline stated on the letter of the program.
Breaking ceases to work at random intervals. Abs light turns on and then off. Problem is very random and unexplained. Sometimes occurs at a light or when taking off from the park position. Seems that a recall should have been issued for this issue.
I was in an automobile accident where I rear ended vehicle in front of me. I tried to stop but the vehicle would not stop or even make an attempt to slow down. My ankle suffered a severe twist from trying to apply brakes. There was plenty of room to stop but the brakes would not react to slow down vehicle. There was a car coming in the oncoming lane so I could not go around vehicle in front of me. My vehicle was in motion in the city and I was going straight. The pavement was a little rough and my abs light was going off and all I could do was hit vehicle in front of me due to brakes failing and not slowing me down.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Prius. The contact stated the brake and abs warning lights illuminated intermittently. The contact mentioned that intermittently the brakes became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the diagnosis was a leaking abs actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 100,000.
Car loses braking ablities when going over rough terrain or slippery terrain. The abs initiates but then stops. The abs light can be seen on the dash (normal). This action is very frightening. The stopping distances have left room for error, so no accidents yet.
Traveling at 40 m. P. H. A pickup truck pulled out onto the roadway ahead about 150ft. I depressed the brake and the vehicle slowed quickly at first to roughly 35 m. P. H. When the abs warning light displayed for a brief moment to about 30 m. P. H. After the warning light stopped flashing; 2 flashes, about 1/2 of a second, the pressure was solid and the vehicle slowed minimally. I managed to stop the vehicle in time, but felt that the brake system had failed to properly slow the vehicle. It felt like stopping a train. I feel unsafe in this vehicle under these conditions and have seen a lot of similar incidences reading online. I'm concerned for my the safety of my family and other motorist, and feel that Toyota should take the responsibility to resolve this issue with these vehicles.
Frequently while driving on dry, clear and clean roads, my car braking system will seem to fail and feel like the car is going into a skid. The abs warning light comes on as well - although there is no reason for brake trouble. Seems to be happening more and more frequently lately.
This is for a 2008 Toyota Prius. This problem occurs during normal daily/routine driving, and occurs almost daily. Problem: while braking, if I encounter any non-smooth surfaces (small pot hole, slight gravel, etc) or while braking and turning--the braking pressure/force momentarily releases for about a 1/2 second ,and is immediately followed by a flashing abs light. When this occurs, the car also momentarily lunges forward due to having no braking force. On 4 occasions I almost ended up into cross traffic at an intersection. This has occurred since I first owned the car back in July 2009 and is not a recent development. This same problem occurred today during my commute to work on wintry mx weather roads, but I did not have any near collisions. No repairs or work has been performed on my car to fix this problem. I assumed this problem was inherent to hybrids, but in light of recent Prius braking problems on the news, I felt it was my duty to report that my 2008 Prius does have a braking issue.
I am having issues with my 2008 Toyota Prius brakes. When I apply pressure to the brakes (gentle- not sudden) there is an instant when the car jerks forward and seems to speed up. The abs sensor light comes on for a second or two, then goes off and the normal braking resumes. This also happened to me with my 2006 highlander hybrid (of which I leased from 9/06-4/08). When I brought it to my dealers attention, what was going on, they said that it was completely normal. It did not seem normal to me. In fact, I have a neighbor who also has a highlander hybrid who attributed a recent fender bender to this very brake/jerking issue. This happens almost on a daily basis (every 2 days would be more like it), particularly when I drive on the bumpy country dirt roads around where I live. I typically drive slow (10-15 mph) on the dirt roads because I don't want to damage/jossle the parts in car 'loose', so 'high' speed would not play a role in why my abs light comes on and the car jumps forward. The issue has not been corrected by my dealer, though I have brought it to their attention with both cars. As I mentioned earlier, they said it was 'normal'. Fortunately this has not caused an accident but I typically drive very conservatively and am very aware of what this car does - brake wise, so I tend to brake early, if possible.
I own a 2008 Prius. When braking on an uneven surface, the brakes seem to momentarily fail and the abs light blinks on the dashboard. It makes me feel as though there is a defect in the braking system. This happens regularly. Incident date is actually date of purchase of the car.
