Brake Light On problems of the 2008 Toyota Prius

22 problems related to brake light on have been reported for the 2008 Toyota Prius. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

Brake actuator has failed. The brakes no longer are getting pressure, and require a lot of force on the pedal to stop. The brake light is on, as well as abs, vsc, and ! lights. Apparently this is a known issue, and Toyota was fixing these under warranty up to 10 years / 150,000 miles, whichever came first. My car has 128k miles, but it's more than 10 years old, and thus, the faulty part is no longer covered under the warranty.

2 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2020

Brakes went out. Hydrauli control assembly antilock brakes modulator valve. Toyota wants $3,806 to repair it. There was a warranty extension program that ended December 2017. This should be on recall, tons of problems. I am the second owner of the vehicle, purchased April 2017, but was not notified by Toyota of the warranty extension, or that it was ending. I was driving the vehicle, all brake lights came on, Toyota says not to drive due to risk of complete loss of braking system. Case number 10664 has been filed with Toyota.

3 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2020

2008 Prius abs and brake lights came on, front passenger tire locked up suddenly almost causing daughter to run off the highway. I drove the vehicle and could not duplicate the issue. 9 months later the abs and brake lights came on again, Toyota cleared codes could not find anything wrong and released the vehicle back. Lights returned the next day. Toyota now states needs a new brake actuator for $2700. Toyota has bulletin gz1 with over 171 complaints on your site with not counting all the vehicles repaired under this bulletin. They will not fix the vehicle without payment of almost half of the vehicle's worth. Contacted Toyota customer service and they were not willing to assist with a known issue. With the risk of accidents when brakes lock up or fail, why was this not a safety recall instead of a "silent recall" warranty extension.

6 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2019

Was parked in line to pick up child from school. Turned car on and put it on drive, moved slowly when parking brake light, abs warning light, traction control light all came on and then my brakes went limp. Had to push all the way to the floor and stopping was still hard to do. Almost hit the car in front of me when suddenly all lights went off and brakes jerked to a sudden stop. I'm terrified to drive my car at faster speed knowing my brakes basically went out. Pretty sure it's failing brake actuator and Toyota knows about this probably but didn't do a recall only extended warranties. . . I didn't own the car when those warranties we're going on in 2016. Headlights also will randomly turn off and I have to turn them off and back on constantly driving at night.

7 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2019

I was driving on the highway 75 mph, (had just gotten back on the highway from a quick stop) when suddenly the brake warning system came on. The brake light/anti-traction control/high pitched siren all sounded. My braking power reduced to around 20%. I was in traffic. I was able to pull to the shoulder and gradually slow down to around 30 mph while traffic was whizzing by. I had to drive on a narrow bridge shoulder to get to the next exit, a mile down the road. After exiting, I turned off the car and restarted. The first time, everything was fine. The second, I had the same problem. Third, no problem. Fourth - problem again. Fifth - no problem. I hired a mobile mechanic to come and do the computer diagnostic, which showed no faults. He then reset the computer; I tested out the car to see if it occurred again. And it didn't, so I cautiously drove home. Cause is unknown. Thankfully this didn't cause an accident, but it could have!.

8 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2019

For the third time I have had to replace my brake light switch, this is a safety issue as it affect how the brake lights work. The break light switch, when malfunctioning prevent or inhibits the vehicle from starting properly. If the switch fails while driving, it can cause problem with the battery regeneration, this is in addition to causing a driving hazard while driving.

9 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

On Friday, November 2, 2018. The brake light and lights for abs and vsc came on, I brought it on to a Toyota dealership service center. He immediately told me without inspecting it that it would be a very costly repair. I received a phone call after they ran diagnostic test and he confirmed it was the abs actuator that needed replacements at a cost of $2500. And then told me that there was a warranty enhancement but that it expired in June of 2018. The tech also told me that it was no help to call Toyota to request repair because they would not be willing to do it. There seems to be so many Toyota Prius owners who are stuck because Toyota is unwilling to repair the issue with the actuator and should do regardless of the limit on warranty or just lift the limit on the warranty. My vehicle only has 100k and I should not have to be paying $2500 to replace a faulty part on the car that Toyota is fully aware of.

10 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2018

After 2nd day owning the brake light came on and 3 other lights vsc, circle with exclamation, check engine, and one more I believe. Went to Toyota to find out the brake actuator is out and they would charge me 2 thousand dollars. There should be warranty on this malfunction. When driving we were luckily in a parking lot.

11 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2018

My Prius made a sound like a turkey call/barking sound, my brake light, abs light, vsc light and exclamation light all came on at the same time. Took veh to Toyota dealership and was advised it was the brake actuator that needed to be replaced. Was advised it was very dangerous to drive any further with this issue.

12 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2018

On Sunday, may 6 the abs, brake light, and master warning indicator lights were activated on my 2008 Prius. The technician at Toyota identify the issue as the brake actuator. The estimated service bill is $3,500. My car is routinely serviced by Toyota and even though the brakes were making noises, I was unaware that the brake actuator was failing. The replacement part would have been fully covered under the warranty enhancement notification (zg1), but that ended on December 31, 2017. My car was symptomatic, but since the warning lights were not activated, Toyota did not replace the actuator, or informs me of its imminent failure. (Toyota relied solely on the car's abs warning lights instead of using their diagnostic evaluation system, which determines trade-in value. ) I am the original owner with less than 87,000 miles, which is far below the 150,000 miles stated in the warranty enhancement notification. Without brakes, my ten year old car in excellent condition is worthless and the costly part makes repairing impossible. Toyota headquarter is standing behind the date on their warranty. The brake actuator--a very major component--should have been recalled and fixed.

13 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2018

Vehicle brake actuator failed causing loss of brakes during reversing, all brake warning lights illuminated on dash. Found that Toyotas extended warranty on this part expired in December 2017. I was never sent a notice about this part possibly failing.

14 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2018

Have been hearing more noises than usual and then the brake wasn't staying engaged after starting the vehicle and putting it in gear. Then all brake warning lights have come on, brake, abs, vsc, and (o), and stayed on. Local dealership is saying it's the brake actuator and quoted me $2,900 to fix. Really?!.

15 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2016

Warning lights came on when I started it- after purchasing the car used (brake light, abs, vsc, and ! lights). Would occur intermittently every other day. I replaced the 12v battery. Took it to the dealership- said they had not idea and 'recalibrated' it. The light came on the next day. Returned to the dealership and now we are being told it's the 'brake actuator' and it's a very well known issue in the generation 2 Prius'. See attached picture for warning lights.

16 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Driving 2008 Toyota Prius with 105k miles on the freeway. Suddenly, I saw the abs,vcs and brake lights shows up on the dashboard along with a continuous screeching noise. I tried to apply the breaks but the car did not stop, I applied the break even harder, still the car did not stop but continuous to move forward. It was traffic time on a Monday morning, so I was going on 15mph. When I found that my break did not respond, I immediately moved to the curb and called aaa. Dealer did check my vehicle and said there is break actuator issue and needs to be replace with a price tag of 3823 usd. Spoke to Toyota customer service, and the associate told that this is a wear and tear issue. How come the break actuator become faulty on a 6 year old car, which was advertised a safe car. Note: I had my 100k service done and I was told everything was normal.

17 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2013

I rear-ended the car in front of me in a very low speed accident, listed on my ticket as 1+ mph by the police officer who witnessed my accident while at the scene attending to an already-occurred accident. When I was 2-3 car lengths behind the car in front of me, going approx. 5-10 mph, I saw their brake lights go on, and I pushed the brake pedal and nothing happened. I pumped the brakes, and nothing happened. When I realized that my car's momentum was not slowing in the slightest, and that I was going to hit the car in front of me, I tried to maneuver into the vacant right lane, but the failure of the car to even slow down made accident avoidance not possible. When I struck the car in front of me, the blow was primarily with the left front corner of my car contacting the center of their bumper. My car was totaled; their car need a new rear bumper but only for cosmetic purposes. I will testify under oath in a court of law that the brakes in my 2008 Toyota Prius failed, and that is why I had this wreck.

18 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2010

Whenever I drive my 2008 Prius over an uneven road surface, the brake abs light goes on and the brakes appear momentarily unresponsive. This happens on a regular basis. It has not caused an accident, in part because I am a very conservative driver. But, I worry that in an emergency situation I would not be able to stop in time.

19 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2010

I am an owner of a 2008 Toyota Prius. I have also experienced the braking problems that have been associated with the 2010 model. When hitting a bump in the road or an uneven part of the road, the brakes will not take hold and the vehicle seems to accelerate or jerk forward. Also the anti-lock brake light flashes.

20 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2009

My 2008 Toyota Prius has experienced multiple incidents in which the brakes do not kick in for a second or so when trying to brake going over rough roads. The anti-lock brake light comes on the dashboard, but the brakes themselves do not begin to slow down the car for a second or so.

21 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

2005 and 2009 Toyota Prius braking problems. I have a 2005 and a 2009 Toyota Prius. On both of these vehicles, I have experienced the same problems which are being described in the news about the 2010 Prius model. I have never had an accident relating to this problem, but the potential is certainly there. The problem occurs when I am moving forward, have the brake slightly depressed, and I hit a pot hole or speed bump. The wheels momentarily speed up, so I react by pressing harder on the brakes and the wheels slow down.

22 Brake Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

My 2008 Prius has the same loss of traction when going over uneven surfaces as the 2010 cas. There are two sections of road that I drive over everyday to and from work. Everyday, when I go over these surfaces my anti-lock brake light turns on indicating that it is momentarily not working. It then feels like I am sliding on ice until I get to even road. Please expand the investigation to the at least the 2008 models.
